About Us

Research Education ... Home
The Center for Integrative Medicine has developed, and regularly updates, two bibliographic databases: The Arthritis and Complementary Medicine Database (ARCAM) and the Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Pain Database (CAMPAIN). These databases are compiled from regular, comprehensive electronic and hand searches of scientific literature sources world-wide. In addition, we maintain the Cochrane Complementary Medicine Field Registry of Randomized Controlled Trials. All three databases are searchable on our site. Development of these databases has been supported by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. How to Search the Databases The search engine, which is the method used to search the database, was designed to allow users with all levels of expertise to quickly search the database for the information they desire. For example, to search for scientific articles pertaining to Acupuncture, the user would type "Acupuncture" in the term box and select the data field that he or she wished to search. Searchable data fields include: authors, keywords, periodical, year, and title. Searches can also be conducted searching all indexed fields and all non-indexed fields. Searchers can combine up to eight terms using Boolean search terms to make searches more specific. For more information on conducting searches click on Help button on the Reference Web Poster tool bar.

LEGISLATIVE ISSUES NETWORK CALL TO ACTION: Support Funding for School Library Databases
As part of two-pronged initiative, TLA is seeking authority for the State Library to license databases on behalf of school libraries and funding to help support school databases access. The statutory changes needed to make this possible are being put forward as HB 661 (Branch) and the companion bill on the Senate, SB 483 (Staples and Ellis). We expect the bills to be set for a hearing within the upcoming weeks. The funds needed to help support school library access will be requested as a contingency rider on the draft appropriation bill in each chamber. These riders will soon be presented. CALL TO ACTION Library supporters are urged to contact members of both the House Appropriations Committee and the Senate Finance Committee to urge support for funding of school database access. The rider, which requests $4.3 million per year for access, would be attached to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission budget should the enabling legislation (HB 661/SB 483) pass and should the funding committees agree to actually fund all or a portion of the request for $4.3 million/year. It is crucial that the committees hear from library supporters. For information about this issue, go to:

Teachers often would like to check the readability of a piece of writing. Edward Fry, formerly of the Rutgers University Reading Center, created one of the most widely used, and easy-to-use readability graphs for educators. Thanks go to McGraw-Hill for granting me permission to reproduce this information on the Web. (Taken from Fry, Edward. Elementary Reading Instruction . NY : McGraw Hill, 1977, p.217.) The graphs (both grade level and ages) are large in size, but the file size is small because they are only in black and white. After you print them out, don't forget to print out the directions for use on this page! You may also want to check out a great piece of software called Readability Plus (for both the PC or Mac) which includes the readability formulas for Dale-Chall, Fry, Flesch Grade Level, Flesch Reading Ease, FOG, SMOG , FORCAST, Powers-Somner-Kearl, and Spache. You can either import a text file, cut-and-paste into the entry box, or type the passages yourself. In addition
