School Bus Driver Training:
National School Safety and Security Services has over 20 years of experience in supporting school transportation officials in increasing staff awareness on school bus safety, security and emergency planning, while maintaining balance and common sense. Many school bus driver training programs focus on how to drive the bus. But this is only half of the job. We train school bus drivers how to manage safety issues on the bus to protect students from threats from both within and outside of the bus.
Professional development training for school bus drivers and transportation administrators includes topics on preventing and managing violence aboard school buses, "heightened security" awareness and procedures, the impact of terrorism on school transportation safety, and emergency preparedness planning for transportation service operations. Our trainers are career K-12 school security professionals with over 20 years of experience working in school districts with transportation services and as national consultants on school security and emergency preparedness issues. Program topics include

The latest trends in school violence threats to safety The impact of terrorism on school security and transportation services

Please review the following bus rules with your children:
Three General Rules
  • Always follow the directions of the bus driver
Obey all safety rules Be courteous to all passengers and respect what belongs to them.
Waiting for the Bus
  • Help the buses run on time. Be at your stop at least five minutes early. Be considerate of private property. Stay off the lawns of homes near the bus stop. Stay off the road while waiting for your bus. Do not approach the bus while it is still moving.

103. School-Bus Safety Rules
Make sure your kids understand these rules of the road.
http://www.familyeducation.com/article/0,1120,66-16528,00.html
School-Bus Safety Rules
Brought to you by National PTA School bus safety starts with you, every morning and every afternoon. Take a few minutes to make sure your kids understand the rules of the road. Most school bus fatalities occur when children are outside the bus, and three quarters of these tragedies involve children under the age of nine. Make sure your children know these rules:
  • Be on time.
  • Never run to or from the bus.
  • Stand back from the curb.
  • Don't push or shove.
  • Stay in your seat.
  • Don't yell or shout.
  • Always obey the driver.
  • Wait for the driver's signal before crossing.
  • Always cross at least 10 feet in front of the bus.
  • Never crawl under a school bus. Meet the bus
Coordinate with other parents to make sure that an adult is present at the bus stop every day, especially with children under the age of nine. Remove drawstrings
Your kids' favorite clothing may not always be the safest. Drawstrings can catch in school bus doors, playground equipment, fences, and escalators. Remove, shorten, or replace drawstrings with another kind of fastener.

Comments: Like in most areas, many preschool facilities and child care centers where I live use vans equipped with special features for transporting preschoolers, toddlers and infants. In many instances, these vans have been decorated or furnished to look like mini school buses. This really helps young children to make an easy transition to the traditional school bus and they feel like they are also going to school like older children. I thought I would share this fun, practical and educational concept.

Hello. My name is Ed Lubowicki. That's me on the left along with Ernie Scott. Program Administrator for the Lee County Florida Safety Department.
You know I've been trying for more than three years to get New Jersey administrators up off their butts and recognize the seriousness of my plight. But it took a little more than 24 hours for Mr. Scott to welcome me into his busy office. And he listened to this 75 years young grandfather talk about school bus safety with an opened mind. And you know what? He thinks the idea makes sense! So much that he is quoted as saying

Learn and obey the school bus laws in your state. Learn the flashing signal light system that school bus drivers use to alert motorists of pending actions
    http://nhtsa.gov/people/injury/buses/kidsschoolbus_en.html
For twenty three million students nationwide, the school day begins and ends with a trip on a school bus. The greatest risk is not riding the bus, but approaching or leaving the bus. Before children go back to school or start school for the first time, it is essential that adults and children know traffic safety rules. Drivers
    • When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch out for children walking or bicycling to school.
When driving in neighborhoods with school zones, watch out for young people who may be thinking about getting to school, but may not be thinking of getting there safely.
Slow down. Watch for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks in neighborhood.
Slow down. Watch for children playing and congregating near bus stops.
Be alert. Children arriving late for the bus may dart into the street with out looking for traffic.
Learn and obey the school bus laws in your state. Learn the "flashing signal light system" that school bus drivers use to alert motorists of pending actions:
Yellow flashing lights indicate that the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles.
