She may have the opportunity to ride to and from school everyday, or she may only ride the bus once a year on a school field trip. Either way, it is important for your child to know bus safety rules. Take some time to go over these, and encourage your child to ask any questions she might have. Help your child get to the bus safely
  • Pack all belongings securely in a back pack. This will allow your child to hold onto the safety rail as he enters the bus. It will also prevent your child from tripping over or dropping any objects while he finds his seat. Make sure your child has plenty of time to get to the bus stop. Your child may risk falling if she has to run for the bus. Also, your child may get frightened and not know what to do if she misses the bus. Have your child walk to the bus stop in a group. If your child is walking to the bus stop, it is better to have him walk with a group of kids rather than by himself.

Enhancing School Bus Safety Volume 2, Number 5 - August/September 1999 Despite the fact that all 50 states require vehicles to stop for a school bus that is loading or unloading, substantial numbers of motorists ignore the flashing red lights and extended stop arms. One study revealed that, on a typical school day in Florida, nearly 10,600 vehicles illegally pass school buses. Projects around the country are demonstrating that combining intensive enforcement of passing (or "stop arm") laws with public education can effectively address this problem. Such programs are necessarily collaborative, often involving school departments, law enforcement agencies, the media, and parent groups. Activities to reduce the illegal passing of school buses are another demonstration of the value of including law enforcement agencies in Safe Communities programs. High-Profile Enforcement Driver Checklists Video Surveillance Operation Safe Stop Northern states are also involved in this issue. New York State's Oper-ation Safe Stop is an annual enforcement day involving all 62 New York counties and more than 250 police departments each fall. Program Coordinator Bob Peters reports that the 1998 event "made almost every TV station in the state." Local coordinators encouraged reporters to conduct "ride-alongs" on school buses or with police officers involved in the enforcement effort. In 1998, almost 1,600 illegal passing tickets and more than 1,700 citations for other violations were given out. In addition to the fall event, Operation Safe Stop conducts public education throughout the year and a "media blitz" in the spring.

White Urges All Illinoisans to Observe School Bus Safety Week
CHICAGO –– Secretary of State Jesse White today emphasized to all Illinois drivers and children the importance of school bus safety and reminded motorists that police will be more closely monitoring school bus zones throughout the state as part of National School Bus Safety Week, which runs from October 20-26. "There is no more important issue to this office than the safety of children on the roads," said White, adding that thousands of students nationwide are injured and dozens are killed annually in mishaps involving school buses. "We need to obey school bus safety laws more closely and teach our children to be more careful around school buses." In observance of National School Bus Safety Week, Secretary White will announce the winners of the 2002 School Bus Safety Poster contest. The third annual contest, which is sponsored by the Secretary's Office and the Illinois Association of Pupil Transportation, helps to raise awareness about the importance of school bus safety. In addition, speakers from the Secretary's Office will visit a number of schools-as they do throughout the year-to present the Toby Tire school bus safety program. Toby tire is a 48-inch fully automated talking robot that teaches students the basics of school bus safety and provides tips on how to board, ride, and exit the bus. White's Toby Tire program has been awarded top honors by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators.

White Stresses Important School Bus Safety Lessons
SPRINGFIELD –– Secretary of State Jesse White said today the first lesson of back-to-school safety is simple: Stay away from strangers "The recent rash of kidnappings across the United States reminds us that our children are vulnerable whenever they are out of their parents' sight," White said. "So the first step to staying safe when going back to school this fall is to remind children never to go with a stranger." As part of his school bus safety program, White utilizes the animated character Toby Tire to teach children the basics of school bus safety. White's school bus safety program, distributed to grade schools all across Illinois, instructs children to tell their school bus driver if a stranger makes any advances toward them. "Through our Toby Tire school bus safety program, we have told children that the very first step to school bus safety is to stay away from strangers," White said. "Students are taught that the school bus driver is a friend. If there is an occasion where a stranger approaches a child while he or she is waiting for the school bus, the driver needs to be informed in order to notify school authorities." A central Illinois school bus driver was credited last spring with saving a 9-year-old boy from a domestic violence situation following the arrest of the boy's step-father, just weeks after the boy's school hosted Secretary White's school bus safety program.

School Bus Safety in Australia
Executive Summary
see also:  Media Release of 25/05/2001 Following community concern over school bus incidents resulting in the death of or serious injury to schoolchildren, the Australian Transport Council (ATC) requested Austroads to:
  • review current practice and research in relation to school bus safety; and to identify new or proven safety measures that may be used as part of a National approach to school bus safety.
As part of the review extensive consultation was undertaken with key internal and external stakeholders and consensus sought with regard to a National School Bus Safety Action Plan. Based on available data, the number of children killed or seriously injured nationally associated with bus travel during school commuting times has steadily fallen from an estimated 14 fatalities and 190 hospitalisations in 1990, to an estimated 4 fatalities and 100 hospitalisations in 1998.  Notwithstanding the reductions achieved, across the country about 9 children are seriously injured each month.  Most of these bus-related casualties involve children struck by vehicles while crossing the road after leaving the bus. In three years of national data, 2 out of 24 child fatalities associated with school buses were passengers in a crash-involved bus.

Buses can often be overcrowded, a union has warned Head teachers have called for seat belts to be made compulsory on all school buses to avoid a "postcode lottery" on children's safety.
Since 1997, it has been illegal to run an organised school coach trip without pupils being strapped in. But a lack of national guidelines for daily bus journeys is an "abdication of responsibility", the National Association of Head Teachers said. It also warned against crowding "up to 100" pupils on board. 'Loopholes and confusion' An NAHT letter to Education Secretary Charles Clarke reads: "The government is aware of the problem but lets children down by doing too little. "There are loopholes in the law and confusion about where responsibility lies." Some councils operate a "three-for-two" rule, where three children under the age of 14 use a seat designed for two adults. This should also be made illegal, the NAHT said. The letter goes on: "The regulation...was written some 50 years ago. Children today are a lot bigger due to better nutrition and diet.

  • When school is opening in the morning and closing in the afternoon, the area around the school is a very busy and crowded. There will be many children using the crosswalk. Car drivers, bikers and in-line skaters must stop to allow people in the crosswalk to cross the street. It is important to look carefully to the left, right and left again if you have to cross the street.
DANGER ZONES AROUND A STOPPED SCHOOL BUS When you are waiting for the school bus, you should wait at the bus stop, and stand well back from the curb. When you get off the bus:
  • Look to the rear of the bus before you step off the bottom step. Our friends at the Pupil Transportation Safety Institute tell us that more and more motorists are passing stopped school buses on the right shoulder - where the door is. Take (five giant steps) straight out the bus door, and out of the danger zone. Make sure you have eye contact with the driver, and wait for the driver to signal you before you cross in front of the bus.

Riding the Bus
School bus transportation is safe. In fact, buses are safer than cars! Even so, last year, approximately 26 students were killed and another 9,000 were injured in incidents involving school buses. More often than not, these deaths and injuries didn't occur in a crash, but as the pupils were entering and exiting the bus. Remember these safety tips:
  • Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the street.
  • Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals you to enter.
  • When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk ten giant steps away from the bus. Keep a safe distance between you and the bus. Also, remember that the bus driver can see you best when you are back away from the bus.
  • Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus.
  • Stay away from the bus until the driver gives his/her signal that it's okay to approach.
  • Be aware of the street traffic around you. Drivers are required to follow certain rules of the road concerning school buses, however, not all do. Protect yourself and watch out!
