School Bus Safety
By Alex Did you know that the school bus is one of the safest forms of transportation today? A school bus is a large, painted vehicle that takes children to school and returns them to their homes in many countries throughout the world. In the United States and Canada, most school buses are painted yellow. School buses are also very common in the United Kingdom, but they are not widely used in Europe. A f ull sized school bus can seat forty five to seventy five or more students. Most buses are paid for by local school districts. Here are some tips to help kids be safe around a bus: Getting to the Bus Stop
  • You should get to the bus stop 5 minutes before the bus arrives. DO NOT run across the road to catch the bus! When crossing the street, always look left, right, and left again. Cars will come from the left first. If there are no sidewalks where you are walking, walk on the side of the road where you are walking against traffic (you can see the cars coming towards you rather than coming from behind you).

School Bus Safety According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, school buses are one of the safest forms of transportation. But there are still dangers, particularly before and after riding the bus.
It is important to remind children about safety on the street and on the school bus. Elementary school children in particular are at high risk of being hit by a car when crossing the street because they:
  • Cannot judge the speed or distance of moving vehicles Are easily distracted and can focus only on one thing at a time Cannot determine the direction of sounds Do not understand how much time and distance is necessary for a vehicle to stop Are hidden by parked cars and bushes Making matters worse, there is an increase in the number of pre-school children being sent to school programs on school buses.

On May 14 , a tragedy brought the issues together as never before. The Bus accident at Carrollton, Kentucky in 1988 was one of the worst bus accidents in United States history. 27 people including the bus driver were killed and 34 other bus passengers sustained minor to critical injuries. Only 6 bus passengers were not injured. Many factors came together in tragedy that terrible night. A tired, volunteer driver operating a flawed and over-crowded church bus had to face a drunk driver coming up the Interstate the wrong way. While the immediate cause was the drunk driver of the other vehicle, it was soon realized that all of the deaths on the bus and most of the injuries occurred not due to injuries received during the impact of the collision, but because the bus caught fire and the occupants could not evacuate promptly after the impact. As the country reacted in shock and horror, it also became clear that the church group, their bus driver and church had violated no federal, state, or local law, regulation, nor any applicable safety standards. And yet, this tragedy occurred. The public and media outcry of "How could this happen?" soon turned into an echoing "We must prevent such in the future."

School Bus Safety Tips Reminder:
Schools in DC are open! Obey the School Zone speed limit of 15 mph when school is in session and children are present. School buses are one of the safest forms of transportation in the nation—nearly 2,000 times safer than the family car. Accidents are rare because school districts and the school bus contractors who serve them work hard to train drivers to avoid getting into accidents. Additionally, buses are designed to withstand all but the most serious crashes without death or serious injury. Each fall during National School Bus Safety Week, parents and teachers can help prevent future accidents with continued training that shows the proper ways for children to get on and get off buses safely.

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY! Although school buses are the safest form of highway transportation, approximately ten children die every year in a school bus accident. And many other children are injured. Below are some facts and a school bus safety guide.
  • School buses are the safest form of highway transportation. The most dangerous part of the school bus ride is getting on and off the school bus. Pedestrian fatalities (while loading and unloading school buses) account for approximately three times as many school bus-related fatalities, when compared to school bus occupant fatalities. The loading and unloading area is called the “Danger Zone” The “Danger Zone” is the area on all sides of the bus where children are in the most danger of not being seen by the driver (ten feet in front of the bus where the driver may be too high to see a child, ten feet on either side of the bus where a child may be in the driver’s blind spot, and the area behind the school bus). Half of the pedestrian fatalities in school bus-related crashes are children between 5 and 7 years old.

  • Go directly from the bus stop. Plan the safest route with the fewest streets to cross. If possible cross streets and corners, using crosswalks if available. Look in all directions before crossing and when safe walk across the street. Always obey traffic signals. Watch for vehicles that might be making a turn. Do not dart from between parked cars or shrubbery. Never accept a ride from a stranger. If possible, face traffic when walking on roads without sidewalks and always use caution. Be extra careful during times of sunrise and sunset, bad weather and during darkness (wear white clothing or something reflective). Leave home early enough so you don't have to run.

Thomas Built Buses takes great pride in helping achieve the excellent safety record that school buses boast. A full one-third of all students who ride school buses each day ride a Thomas. School Bus Safety
    Overview
One of the most difficult and often overlooked jobs within any school district is that of the bus driver. School bus drivers generally make minimum wage and have the Herculean task of safely navigating the streets in a vehicle approximately four times as long as your average SUV all the while with their back to as many as 60 children with various levels of energy and anxiety. Their task that is only complicated when students are disruptive or when there is a disconnect between the drivers and the school administration. Each year, 23.5 million children ? roughly 60 percent of all school children travel approximately 4.3 billion miles on 440,000 school buses, according the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. But, despite the magnitude and cost of the school transportation system, a surprising shortage of information exists about the busing of children, apart from government safety figures. Very little has been done to examine the effect of the massive system on school budgets, instructional costs or, most important, the well-being of the children who spend so many hours each school day on those buses. And while many programs are designed to reduce violence in schools, very few have addressed reducing violence on school buses.

    Safety/Security: School Bus Safety
ATU Position on the Use of Vans for School Transportation Services
Every day, 24 million children are transported to school on public school buses. While school buses are generally considered to be the safest motor vehicles on the highways, we must do more to ensure that our children make it to and from school safely. In addition to aging bus fleets, the privatization of services and a shortage of qualified drivers, which have eroded the safety and quality of services in the school bus industry, safety is being further compromised by the efforts of school districts to bypass federal, state and local safety requirements by using passenger vans and minivans in place of school buses. These vans do not offer the same safety benefits as school buses, which were designed to provide the maximum occupant protection. In addition, the drivers of the vans are not required to possess a Commercial Drivers License and do not receive specialized driver training, a background check, a physical, drug and alcohol testing, or a driver record check. The ATU supports a prohibition against the use of vans and minivans that do not meet Federal safety standards for school buses to transport children to and from school and school-related activities.
