@import "../home.css"; @import "students.css"; Tips for Applying for Scholarships Start exploring scholarship and fellowship opportunities early! Preparation requires work well in advance of submission deadlines to find scholarships that best match your interest and experiences, and to plan academic and extracurricular activities to develop qualifications to the fullest by the time you apply. Prestigious national scholarships and fellowships are highly competitive, but as a UW student you are a likely candidate. It is a lot of work, and there are no guarantees – except that if you do not apply, you are guaranteed not to receive an award. Where to Look for Scholarships Our website contains the information you need to get started on your scholarship or fellowship journey. We encourage all students who have identified potential scholarships to request our help in developing competitive application materials. We offer scholarship workshops; will send periodic messages via list-serv about various funding opportunities, schedule student advising appointments, and offer drop-in hours. How to become a strong candidate for Scholarships Most merit awards are open only to sophomores, juniors and seniors, and many are intended for use after the completion of a bachelor’s degree. Even so it is never too early to start planning for the application process.

SOP Application Tips Obtaining Information Include a self-addressed stamped envelope when you request application forms and information about scholarships by mail. However, if you can get a form or routine information by telephone, do so. The time saved is worth the cost of a phone call, even if it is long distance. Read the Fine Print As soon as you receive the application, read the instructions carefully. Pay attention to the information required. If the application requires a transcript from all schools you have attended, request this information as soon as possible. After a few weeks have passed, call the schools to be sure that the transcripts have been sent to the proper address. If by chance you have to hand deliver a transcript, do not tamper with the seal. If the seal looks tampered with, the transcript may not be accepted. The Reason Most Applications Come With a Phone Number If you find that some instructions on an application are unclear, seek advice either from the scholarship provider, the Scholarship Opportunities Program office in 1200 Student Services II, an instructor, or an academic counselor. Understand that when you call the office that the application came from and ask questions, many others probably had the same questions. Letters of Recommendation Practice Makes Perfect If essays or statements of purpose are asked for (or paragraph-long answers to particular questions), rework them over a series of drafts until they are as well written as you can make them. A good essay or answerone that is concise, well organized, smoothly written, interesting, distinctive, and without cliches or errorsmay take many drafts to produce. Show your application to a T.A., instructor, counselor at the Scholarship Opportunities Program, or anyone else who can give good criticism. Leave time for this rewriting and consultation.

Points to remember when applying for a scholarship
    DO
    • Apply for scholarships only after you have applied for admission and been offered a place on a course at the University of Westminster. Read the information on individual scholarships carefully and ensure that you only apply for ones for which you are eligible. The same application form should be used for applying for more than one scholarship. Attach the relevant papers only and keep your supporting documents to a minimum. The quantity of documents sent does not give any advantage. Keep your application concise. Attach translations where supporting documents are in any other language but English. If you are unsure for which scholarship you are eligible, please just tell us what level of support you require e.g. fees only; fees + accommodation etc. and we will match the scholarship to your needs.
    DON'T
    • Apply if you have already enrolled or begun a course of study at the University of Westminster.
