    What is schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a chronic, disabling illness that may be caused by abnormal amounts of certain chemicals in the brain. These chemicals are called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters control our thought processes and emotions. Return to top
How do people who have schizophrenia think and act?
People who have schizophrenia may seem different from other people. They may seem to show fewer emotions than other people. They may keep to themselves, withdrawing from social contact. At times they may seem slowed down, as if they don't have enough energy. People who have schizophrenia may have unusual beliefs, called delusions. They may believe that others are spying on them or that they are famous people from history. Sometimes, they may hear voices telling them what to do or saying things about them. Voices that others can't hear and visions that others can't see are called hallucinations. A schizophrenic person's thoughts may also race through his or her mind, becoming confused and disorganized. These symptoms come and go, often occurring after stressful events. Return to top

    Schizophrenia:
Any of a group of psychotic reactions characterized by withdrawl from reality with highly variable accompanying affective, behavioral, and intellectual disturbances. - The American Heritage Dictionary
My name is Jason Stuart Ratcliff. I have been struggling with schizophrenia now for about 15 years. My medication helps immensely but it doesn't make me completely well. At least I know how to handle the bad times when they come; I've been dealing with this a long time, and overall I feel that my life is good. I have my studies and art and writing to keep me content, and have a lot of hope that the worst is behind me. This site is all about mental illness, mad pride, and all things schizophrenic. I have several books for sale through Amazon and elsewhere, but there's plenty to read for free too, so kick your shoes off and enjoy.
My memoir, Rites of Passage: My Schizophrenic Youth in Mosaic, is now available. A coming-to-age memoir whose major rite of passage is a schizophrenia diagnosis. Psychosis for Ratcliff becomes as enlightening as it is agonizing. 182 pages
"Rites of Passage: My Schizophrenic Youth in Mosaic is a fascinating and insightful autobiographical account of Jason Ratcliff's experience and struggles with psychosis. Self-reflective, philosophical, extremely honest, and, at times, heartbreaking, this book is a valuable contribution to the field of human psychology. It should be required reading in every introductory psychopathology class."

    New hope for schizophrenia sufferers
Key research from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) could lead to the first early diagnostic tool for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. "At the moment we don't have any biological tests for these conditions," said one of the authors, UNSW Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Philip Ward, who is based at Liverpool Hospital's Schizophrenia Research Unit. "Our research could eventually lead to a simple, cost-effective and safe way to distinguish patients with schizophrenia from those suffering bipolar disorder. This is important because a patient can get treatment sooner and hopefully have a better outcome." Auditory recovery cycle dysfunction in schizophrenia: A study using event-related potentials has just been published in the international journal Psychiatry Research. "Sixty percent of patients with schizophrenia have auditory hallucinations," said co-author, UNSW PhD candidate Nathan Clunas. "So we decided to look at a particular brain wave-form which measures attention and attention deficits that can be found in these patients." The researchers recorded the brain waves associated with pairs of sounds in 17 patients with schizophrenia. Subjects heard the sounds through a set of headphones, while performing a visual distraction task. The patients' results were compared with those of a sex and age-matched healthy volunteer group.

    169. UCLA Center For Research On Treatment & Rehabilitation Of Psychosis
Provides research services and consultation to investigators pursuing studies of severe mental illnesses, including schizophrenia.
    http://www.npi.ucla.edu/irc/
The Center has operated continuously since 1977 with funding from the National Institute of Mental Health. The Center's faculty are a cohesive, multidisciplinary team who have worked together for more than two decades on the problem and unanswered questions posed by schizophrenia understanding its root causes and the determinants of its subsequent course and outcome, developing and evaluating improved methods of treatment and rehabilitation. The IRC, now entering its 23 rd year, is made up of core research Units that provide infrastructure support to a large number of extramurally funded research projects, generate new interdisciplinary research on interventions for psychosis, develop new interventions, assessments and research tools, and provide assistance and consultation to a national and international network of colleagues. New research initiatives are stimulated by an IRC program of seed money support for pilot studies, and by ongoing multidisciplinary Theme Teams, small working groups organized around significant research topics. The primary mission of our Intervention Research Center is to contribute to the goals of recovery from and prevention of psychosis and other disabling mental disorders. Even though the underlying etiology of serious mental disorders is not known, we can set ourselves the task of learning more about the interventions, risk and protective factors, and markers of vulnerability to schizophrenia and related disorders that will gradually make a difference in recovery from these disorders and eventually make prevention possible.

by reducing craving for substances of abuse.
    know as they make decisions.
    What is Clozaril?
Clozaril is an atypical antipsychotic medication for patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Approved by the FDA for general use in the U.S. in 1990, the medication is used for patients with schizophrenia and other mental disorders who have not responded well to standard antipsychotic medications or who have had intolerable side effects to them. In December 2002, clozaril was also approved for reducing the risk of recurring suicidal behavior in people with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Clozaril is also being studied for the treatment of bipolar disorder that has not responded to other treatments. In schizophrenia, clozaril is useful for treating positive symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, bizarre behavior and hostility. It also treats the negative symptoms-withdrawal, blunted emotions, lack of motivation, and inability to experience pleasure or enjoyment. Negative symptoms seem to respond better to clozaril than to the traditional antipsychotics.

    177. David A. Krebes' Personal Home Page
Includes a thesis work on knot theory and information on schizophrenia.
    http://www.telusplanet.net/public/dkrebes
    Dave Krebes
// text for first two pictures I have devoted much of my life to the study of knots . In my Ph.D. thesis (math), I show that a seamless unknotted loop (circle) of rope cannot be twisted, contorted or deformed in such a way as to intersect the interior of a sphere in the pair of arcs shown in the first picture (this is commonly known as a square knot). Equivalently: If a curve intersects the interior of a sphere in a square knot then it is genuinely knotted (ie. unalterably different from a circle). For example in the second picture the loop (follow it around it is indeed a single loop) is knotted: A long rubber band cannot be manipulated into this shape without breaking it and gluing the ends back together. We call this a "topological" property of the square knot because it is a geometric property that is independent of lengths, angles, or rate of curvature (The size of the circle doesn't matter. In fact even an ellipse or a heart shape would do). The mathematical field of "algebraic topology", one of the great scientific achievements of the twentieth century, expresses many such properties in terms of boundaries As another exercise, try showing that if you replace each of the two strands of the square knot with two strands that run side-by-side like a pair of railroad tracks through the sphere, for four strands in total, then the situation is opposite to that described above: There is indeed such a disc, or a way to "tie" ("wrap" might be a better word; there are no free ends to tie with) the circle.
