Schizophrenia Definition Return to top Schizophrenia is a serious brain disorder. It is a disease that makes it difficult for a person to tell the difference between real and unreal experiences, to think logically, to have normal emotional responses to others, and to behave normally in social situations. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Schizophrenia is a complex and puzzling illness. Even the experts in the field are not exactly sure what causes it. Some doctors think that the brain may not be able to process information correctly. Genetic factors appear to play a role, as people who have family members with schizophrenia may be more likely to get the disease themselves. Some researchers believe that events in a person's environment may trigger schizophrenia. For example, problems during intrauterine development (infection) and birth may increase the risk for developing schizophrenia later in life. Psychological and social factors may also play some role in its development. However, the level of social and familial support appears to influence the course of illness and may be protective against relapse.

The corner stone when treating schizphrenia is with no doubt medication with so called antipsychotic drugs, or neuroleptics. This group of medications consists of a number of chemical substances, and is divided into several subgroups. These have all shown to be very efficient in reducing the psychotic symptoms in schizophrenia, but vary in terms of the side effects they may cause. Observer Sunday March 18, 2001
Tiny mutations in our ancestors' brain cells triggered mankind's takeover of the world 100,000 years ago. But these changes also cursed our species to suffer from schizophrenia and depression. Horrobin - who is medical adviser to the Schizophrenia Association of Great Britain - argues that the changes which propelled humanity to its current global ascendancy were the same as those which have left us vulnerable to mental disease. 'We became human because of small genetic changes in the chemistry of the fat in our skulls,' he says. 'These changes injected into our ancestors both the seeds of the illness of schizophrenia and the extraordinary minds which made us human.'

The Relationship Between
A Bibliographic Essay
~ Sandra Stahlman, June 1992 The nature of schizophrenia, and other forms of psychosis, is still under debate and a significant issue is the relationship between psychosis and the mystical, or religious, experience. Throughout history this question has been addressed by scholars from all fields of inquiry. Currently, psychologists are looking at the similarities and differences between the experiences, hoping to shed light on the nature, process, and treatment of psychosis. I was curious to see what has been discovered.
The information available on mystical experience and psychotic episodes seems limitless. This paper will focus on the current psychological perspective which examines mystical and psychotic experiences as a natural, universal phenomena. This is not a new idea; however, specific to recent research is its objective, systematic nature. Looking to define both in value-neutral, experiential terms, psychologists are scrutinizing the biological, psychological, and behavioral correlates of the two experiences, combining information from ongoing measurement and personal interviews and the body of knowledge available from philosophy and the study of religion.
In order to discover the relationship between mystical experience and psychosis, analysis must first be directed at defining each individually. Therefore I present not only a review of the current psychological research regarding this relationship, but also a look at theories addressing the questions "what is a mystical experience?" and "what is psychosis?"

Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder denoting an often chronic, major mental illness primarily affecting thinking , with attendant difficulties in perception of reality, which in turn can affect behavior and emotion . The term schizophrenia comes from the Greek words σχίζω ( schizo , split or divide) and φρενός ( phrenos mind ) and can be translated as "shattered mind." The primary sign of schizophrenia is considered to be fragmentation of basic thought structure and cognition, and the inability to distinguish between internal and external experience. People with schizophrenia may report hallucinations or be observed responding to them and may express clearly delusional beliefs. Social or occupational dysfunction, a number of secondary signs, and the lack of an identifiable organic cause may be used to confirm the diagnosis. Mainstream research has suggested that both biological and sociocultural influences are important contributing factors, with current research often focusing on the influences of biochemical and genetic factors on the neurobiology of the brain. The status of schizophrenia is considered controversial by some, who claim a lack of objectivity in the stated diagnostic criteria. There is no objective biological test for schizophrenia, and diagnosis is based on the basis of the self-reported experiences of the patient combined with the observations of the psychiatrist or other responsible clinician.

Schizophrenia strikes 1% of the world's population at some point in their lives. It affects people from all walks of life, usually young people between the ages of 15 and 30. Not everyone will experience the same symptoms, but some symptoms, such as hearing voices, are common to many. Schizophrenia alters the way people think and feel, so that perceptions may be changed and thinking can be disturbed. This is very disabling for them and very distressing for their families. Other serious mental illnesses, including bipolar disorder, schizo-affective disorder and majordepression, are also very debilitating. Fortunately, research is bringing about a new era in treatment and understanding of these disorders. While cause and cure are still elusive, substantial strides have been made in the development of medications to treat these conditions. With modern medical treatment, opportunities for rehabilitation, and the support of family and friends, these diagnoses need not be as feared as they were in the past. The World Fellowship for Schizophrenia and Allied Disorders is the only worldwide international organization dedicated to lessening the problems faced by people with serious mental illness and their families. Our members include family support and advocacy organizations in over 50 countries (
