Department for Northern European Studies
The Department for Northern European Studies (Nordeuropa-Institut) is an independent scientific institution within the Philosophical Faculty II of Humboldt University Berlin . It was founded in 1994, later the same year the Department of Scandinavian Studies at the Free University and its library consisting of more than 30 000 books were merged into the new department. Thus the Humboldt University now also contains the biggest department for Scandinavian studies in Germany. By combining the study and teaching of all the Scandinavian languages, Scandinavian medieval studies and modern Scandinavian literature, it also fulfils the longtime aim of gathering all the areas of Scandinavian studies in Berlin under the same roof. Furthermore, it is the first institution in Germany providing research and teaching in Scandinavian cultural studies.
Northern Europe
The founding of the institute symbolised a new beginning, both in institutional and in academic sense. This was necessitated by the parallel restructuring of Europe in 1989 - Northern Europe no longer meant the core countries of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway; but rather a broad belt of countries reaching from Greenland to the northern parts of Russia. Both political and structural similairities unite also the Baltic countries and the southern Baltic Sea area with the region.

SCANDINAVIAN STUDIES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Scandinavian Studies for International Students is a program especially designed for exchange and guest students who are working towards a degree in Norwegian or Scandinavian language and literature at a foreign university. In this program students may combine courses that the Department of Scandinavian Studies and Comparative Literature (INL) offers at the B.A. and M.A. levels in Scandinavian Studies, i.e. Scandinavian linguistics, Scandinavian literature and Old Norse language and literature. International students are free to choose the courses they want to take at their level. They may also combine courses from INL with courses from other departments at NTNU. International students choosing to take courses from this Scandinavian Studies for International Students study guide will not be able to use these courses as part of a Norwegian degree. These course options are specifically designed to give students credit at foreign universities. Students should consult the ordinary study guide for Scandinavian Studies for information about earning credits toward a Norwegian degree. International students are not required to have a command of both official Norwegian languages. The usual requirements regarding

German Major
There are two tracks in the German major: track A: Culture and Language , designed for prospective teachers and others wishing to put their German proficiency to use in their careers, and track B: Literature and Language , recommended for prospective graduate students and students with an expressed interest in literature, comparative studies, or related fields. Both tracks require and emphasize the development of proficiency in the German language. The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures strongly recommends that students in both tracks of the German major plan to study abroad in the Bonn Program or in an equivalent program. Both major tracks require 46 hours. The prerequisite (German 201, 5 credits) does not count towards the total required hours for the major. Students customize their own program by first choosing a track and then choosing their electives according to their interests. All course choices must be preapproved by the Undergraduate Studies Advisor

Dutch Courses (Division 357)
112. Second Special Speaking and Reading Course. Dutch 111 or the equivalent. (4). (FL). This course, a continuation of 111, proceeds with the basic grammar of the Dutch language. We will primarily use the monolingual text Levend Nederlands (Living Dutch), in which each lesson consists of an everyday conversation, a grammatical explanation, exercises, a comprehensive vocabulary list of one topic, questions about the conversation, discussion and homework. To strengthen the command of the language, grammatical patterns in conversation will be emphasized. To enliven the class, the teacher will present the students with songs of Dutch singers and cabaret artists, and simple prose, which can serve as a starting point for conversation. (Broos) 232. Second-Year Dutch. Dutch 231 or the equivalent. (4). (FL). This course, a continuation of Dutch 231, will further examine the particular difficulties and subtleties of Dutch grammar and style. Grammatical items introduced in previous courses will be reviewed where necessary. Introduction to contemporary Dutch society by means of songs, comics, newspaper articles, and literature will enliven the course, which will be conducted mostly in Dutch. (Broos) 492. Colloquium on Modern Dutch Literature.
