Susan Brantly
Professor Susan Brantly joined the faculty of the Scandinavian Department in 1987 and became a full professor in 1999. She is a specialist in Swedish language and literature and has a Ph.D. from Yale University. She also holds an M. A. from the University of Minnesota and a B. A. in German and Scandinavian from Harvard University. Credits: 3-4 (fourth credit requires a term paper) Summary:
Course Requirements:
Students view lectures on a CD-ROM, take online quizzes, and participate in bulletin board discussions. There is a final essay exam which will be distributed and returned via email. The CD-ROM and other course materials are available at Underground Textbook Exchange located at 664 State St. in Madison. Technical Requirements:
This course requires a computer with Internet hookup.

After college (AB in Folklore and Mythology) and graduate school (PhD in Scandinavian Languages and Literatures), I began my academic career in the Scandinavian Section at UCLA. My main areas of Scandinavian research are folklore, modern literature, film and Old Norse literature. My main Scandinavian language is Danish. Much of my research has focused on the study of storytelling in late nineteenth and early twentieth century rural communities in Denmark. I have considered the role witchcraft accusations play in these communities, as well as explored aspects of legends about the Black Death. I have also tried to answer the question, "When ghosts appear in the neighborhood, who ya' gonna call?" Indeed, my first book, Interpreting Legend , provides a methodology for the study of storytelling in small communities. I used much of this approach in my recent study of storytelling among paramedics

Regular Scandinavian Literature and Culture Courses on Campus
The program offers a number of courses in Scandinavian literature, culture, and film. These courses are all taught in English , and readings are in English translation. The courses also for the bachelor's degree.
  • 250 Scandinavian Fantasies (4 credits) Explores portrayals of the fantastic and fantasy characters in Scandinavian texts. Sample topics are crime fiction, folklore and mythology, and gothic towers and tales. 315 Cinematic Traditions in Scandinavia (4 credits) Examines the early history and development of the Scandinavian cinematic culture including the works of Ingmar Bergman. Films are subtitled. (Also meets the Multicultural: International Cultures requirement.) 325 Constructions versus Constrictions of Identity (4 credits) Explores the notion of regional, ethnic, gender, and class identities in Scandinavian texts and culture. Topics include immigrant-emigrant experience, lore of the Arctic, and Finland-Swedish writing. (Also meets the Multicultural: Identity/Pluralism/Tolerance requirement.)

Scandinavian Literature and Culture Courses in Study Abroad Programs
Many students who major or minor in Scandinavian Studies also complete part of their course work while studying in a UO-sponsored overseas study program in Scandinavia. In particular, there are courses available at each UO study site in Scandinavia that can be applied toward the required literature and culture courses for the Scandinavian Studies major or minor. Here are some examples of recent courses at each overseas site that can be used to meet major and minor requirements: Denmark Aalborg University
Students may select from a variety of courses on Scandinavian culture and society offered in various academic departments. Courses taught in English or Danish. A semester- or yearlong program is available on "The Scandinavian Welfare State in a Comparative Perspective." In addition, the "Introduction to Scandinavia" course is available to all students.

The WESS Scandinavian Discussion Group meeting on 11 January 1998 at ALA Midwinter Conference focused on pooling tips and information regarding the acquisition of Scandinavian books in translation. Many of these titles are published by small presses that fall outside library approval plans and are advertised on a limited basis so that the nonspecialists responsible for Scandinavian acquisitions in most libraries may miss them. The following summary information is intended to inform colleagues who were unable to attend and to serve as a convenient reference guide. It is drawn from presentations by Beau David Case (Ohio State) and Mariann Tiblin (Minnesota) and comments by other attendees.
