Door to door scams
Door to door scams are one of the biggest crimes against seniors, especially as the weather gets nicer.
Scams against seniors
Scam artists specifically target older people that own their own homes and live in middle income neighborhoods. There is more money here than in lower income neighborhoods but there is also a lack of coordinated services from contracted service professionals. Detective Mark Rogers of the Greenville IN police department said these scammers are targeting seniors in particular. They try and sell things like home repair, driveway repair, chimney cleaning, gutter cleaning and tree trimming,” Rogers said, noting that selling door-to-door requires a license in many municipalities, and home repair almost always requires a license. “They first try for cash, but even if they cannot get that, they try for a check that is personally made out. Then they just go right down to the bank and cash the check,” he said. "You'll never see them again."

Top 10 investing scams
By Kay Bell and Amy Fleitas, Bankrate.com, June 2004 The stock market has picked up steam lately, but for many investors the resurgence isn't enough. Instead, they look for quicker ways to bolster their portfolios. The problem is, some promised high-return opportunities are downright frauds. Ponzi scammers top the list of scam artists taking return-hungry investors to the cleaners, according to the latest look at the investment industry by the North American Securities Administrators Association. A close second is investment fraudsters targeting seniors. "These schemes offer products and pitches that may sound tempting to many seniors who've seen their retirement accounts and income dwindle in recent years," says Ralph A. Lambiase, NASAA president and director of the Connecticut Division of Securities. "It pays to remember that if an investment opportunity sounds too good to be true, it usually is."

Internet Scams, Fraud and Schemes
There should be a big warning sign with every computer. This sign should say, "Beware! When you surf the Internet and read email, you will be constantly subjected to offers that are nothing more than attempts to defraud you."
That may sound too ominous but it is true, users are constantly besieged with fraudulent offers.
If you receive an offer or hear of something that sounds really good, a good place to check it out is Fraud Watch International . However, if it isn't listed does NOT mean the offer is legit. The biggest scam in your email could be the Nigerian letter scam
Have you ever heard of phishing ? (Pronounced fishing) This ugly starts by coming into your inbox. It purports to be from PayPal, Citibank or some other reputable company. It could say they are updating their database and need some more information from you, or it could say that they need to verify information about your account. There is a link in the email where you can go and update your information. Wait a minute, think! Do you even have an account with these folks? If you do have an account, they already have your information! If you do click on the link and go to their site, look at the web address! Chances are it won't even resemble the company's real web address! Some of them are very clever though, and get a domain that 'almost' looks like the real thing. Best thing to do with these emails is notify the customer service of this company so they can investigate and take down the site. For more information, read this article on ZDNet, '

Looks like Israel is taking steps to end fraud and mystery in telecom billing: Communications Ministry to check phone bill accuracy An external company will see if charges are accurate and itemization is understandable. Minister Dalia Itzik wants the process underway in a year or less. Guy Hadass 3 Jul 05 18:26
This problem has not previously been addressed. No objective and independent examination of telephone bills has ever been carried out, and there is therefore no way of knowing whether the communications companies are really charging accurately for use. Minister of Communications Dalia Itzik decided that the examination would begin within a year, but an attempt is underway to shorten the process and begin the examination earlier. At the same time, the hearing granted to the communications companies regarding telephone bills has been completed. It was decided that the rule for phone bill itemization for consumers would be changed within six months. Account itemization must be clearer and easier to understand in order to enable consumers to understand what they are getting for their money, and enable them to compare more easily between companies.

What is Phishing/Email Fraud?
Email fraud and phishing are two of the most dangerous security threats delivered in email, often resulting in identity theft, financial losses and compromised security. Email forgery is practically impossible to detect by reading email content because graphic images and content are often copied from legitimate email messages. Identity theft attacks are typically initiated through email by scammers pretending to be well-known companies. These messages encourage you to click on links within the message to visit a website that may ask for account numbers, passwords and other personal information. Tragically, many people believe they are protected from phishing scams and email fraud by their antivirus, firewall, antispam and antispyware software. In fact, these software products do not prevent email fraud and many victims using these security products are ironically at increased risk because they have been lulled into a false sense of security.
