The region's ancient nomadic peoples developed a deep love for the land as well as a strong sense of independence. With the advent of Islam in the 7th century, tribes and clans were unified under one religion.
The Saudi Arabian state was first established in the central region of the Arabian Peninsula in the early 18th century. Modern Saudi Arabia was founded in 1932 by King Abdulaziz bin Abdelrahman Al-Saud. The nation experienced remarkable growth over a short period, spurred by the discovery of oil in the 1930s. The people of Saudi Arabia now enjoy a high standard of living based on an increasingly diversified economy and have access to the most modern amenities and services. Proud of their history and energetic participants in the successful modernization of their country, today's Saudi Arabians face the future with great confidence.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia comprises almost four-fifths of the Arabian Peninsula, an area about one-third the size of the continental United States. Geographically, it is situated in the southwestern part of Asia. The eastern part of Saudi Arabia is a plateau that begins with the great Nafud desert in the north, continues along the Arabian Gulf and culminates in the south in the world's largest sand desert, the Rub Al-Khali (Empty Quarter). To the west of this plateau is the Najd, the heartland of the peninsula, known for its spectacular escarpments and gravel and sand deserts. The capital city of Riyadh is located in the Najd. A chain of mountains in western Saudi Arabia runs parallel to the Red Sea. The Hijaz region along the Red Sea contains the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, the port city of Jeddah and the summer capital of Taif.

SAUDI ARABIA
People and History People Saudi Arabia's 1997 population was estimated to be about 20.5 million, including about 6 million resident foreigners. Until the 1960s, most of the population was nomadic or semi-nomadic; due to rapid economic and urban growth, more than 95% of the population now is settled. Some cities and oases have densities of more than 1,000 people
per square kilometer (2,600 per square mile). Saudi Arabia is known as the birthplace of Islam, which in the century following Muhammad's death in 632 spread west to Spain and east to India. Islam obliges all Muslims to make the Hajj, or pilgrimage to Makkah, at least once during their lifetime if they are able to do so. The cultural environment in Saudi Arabia is highly conservative; the country adheres to a strict interpretation of Islamic religious law (Shari'a). Cultural presentations must conform to narrowly defined standards of ethics. Men and women are not permitted to attend public events together and are segregated in the work place. Most Saudis are ethnically Arab. Some are of mixed ethnic origin and are descended from Turks, Iranians, Indonesians, Indians, Africans, and others, most of whom immigrated as pilgrims and reside in the Hijaz region along the Red Sea coast. Many Arabs from nearby countries are employed in the kingdom. There also are significant numbers of expatriate workers from North America, South Asia, Europe, and East Asia.

History

There are findings indicating settlements in Qatar dating a couple of thousand years behind in time. Evidence indicates also that the climate of this period was not as hot as in our time. However, there is some evidence pointing in direction of Qatar being close to uninhabited for centuries, up until as recently as the 16th century.
Around 1750: The arrival of the ath-Thani family, coming from Najd in today's Saudi Arabia . They settled in the region as fishers and pearl divers.
The al-Khalifa families moves from Kuwait to Qatar. Persian invasion, driving the al-Khalifas to Bahrain, but they still hold a great influence over Qatar. Around 1850: Qatar is becoming a centre for pearl extraction, with Zubara in the northwest as the main centre. This activity was controlled by the al-Khalifa family of Bahrain (now the ruling family). There were at this period serious tensions between the ath-Thani and the al-Khalifa families. Doha ) is established as the capital of the realm of ath-Thani, when the leader of the family, Sheikh Muhammadi bni Th-Thani, claims position as emir.

Saudi Arabia - HISTORY
Saudi Arabia - History
Saudi Arabia ABD AL AZIZ ibn Abd ar Rahman Al Saud rose to prominence in the Arabian Peninsula in the early twentieth century. He belonged to the Saud family (the Al Saud), who had controlled most of Arabia during the nineteenth century. By the time of Abd al Aziz, however, the rival Al Rashid family forced the Al Saud into exile in Kuwait. Thus, it was from Kuwait that Abd al Aziz began the campaign to restore his family to political power. First, he recaptured Najd, a mostly desert region in the approximate center of the peninsula and the traditional homeland of the Al Saud. During the mid-1920s, Abd al Aziz's armies had captured the Islamic shrine cities of Mecca and Medina. In 1932, he declared that the area under his control would be known as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. At first Abd al Aziz's realm was a very poor one. It was a desert kingdom with few known natural resources and a largely uneducated population. There were few cities and virtually no industry. Although the shrines at Mecca and Medina earned income from the Muslim pilgrims who visited them every year, this revenue was insufficient to lift the rest of the kingdom out of its near subsistence level. All this changed, however, when United States geologists discovered oil in the kingdom during the 1930s. Saudi Arabia's exploitation of its oil resources transformed the country into a nation synonymous with great wealth. Wealth brought with it enormous material and social changeso much change that Saudi Arabia became an exaggerated paradigm of possibilities for development in the Third World. The transformation was staggering: in a few years the Saudis had gone from herding camels to moving billions of dollars around the world with electronic transfers.

Saudi Arabia
History
Except for a few major cities and oases the harsh climate historically prevented much settlement of the Arabian Peninsula. People of various cultures have lived there over a span of more than 5 000 years. The Dilmun culture along the Gulf coast was contemporaneous with the Sumerians and ancient Egyptians and most of the empires of the ancient world traded with the states of the peninsula. The Saudi state began in central Arabia in about 1750. A local ruler Muhammad bin Saud joined forces with an Islamic reformer Muhammad Abd Al-Wahhab to create a new political entity. Over the next 150 years the fortunes of the Saud family rose and fell several times as Saudi rulers contended with Egypt the Ottoman Empire and other Arabian families for control on the peninsula. The modern Saudi state was founded by the late King Abdul Aziz Al-Saud (known internationally as Ibn Saud). In 1902 Abdul Aziz recaptured Riyadh the Al-Saud dynasty's ancestral capital from the rival Al-Rashid family. Continuing his conquests Abdul Aziz subdued Al-Hasa the rest of Nejd and the Hijaz between 1913 and 1926. In 1932 these regions were unified as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Boundaries with Jordan Iraq and Kuwait were established by a series of treaties negotiated in the 1920s with two "neutral zones"one with Iraq and the other with Kuwaitcreated. The Saudi-Kuwaiti neutral zone was administratively partitioned in 1971 with each state continuing to share the petroleum resources of the former zone equally. Tentative agreement on the partition of the Saudi-Iraqi neutral zone was reached in 1981 and partition was finalized by 1983. The country's southern boundary with Yemen was partially defined by the 1934 Treaty of Taif which ended a brief border war between the two states. It remains undefined in many areas. The border between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates was agreed upon in 1974. Boundary differences with Qatar remained unresolved.

    Saudi Arabia
    Brief History
Abd al Aziz ibn Abd ar Rahman Al Saud, the first king of Saudi Arabia, had not gained control of the western part of the country when he granted the first oil concession in 1923. A British investment group, the Eastern and General Syndicate, was the recipient. The syndicate gambled on the possibility that it could sell the concession, but British petroleum companies showed no interest. The concession lapsed and was declared void in 1928. The original concession called for an annual rental fee of 5,000 British pounds (£) in gold or its equivalent until oil was discovered; a loan of £50,000 in gold to the Saudi government; a royalty payment of four shillings gold per net ton of crude production after the discovery of oil; and the free supply to the government of specific quantities of products from the refinery Aramco was to build after oil was discovered. (In 1933 the British pound was worth about US$4.87; there were twenty shillings to the British pound.) The company received exclusive rights to explore for, produce, and export oil, free of all Saudi taxes and duties, from most of the eastern part of Saudi Arabia for sixty years. The terms granted by the government were liberal, reflecting the king's need for funds, his low estimate of future oil production, and his weak bargaining position. The original concession agreement was modified many times. The first modification was made in 1939 after the discovery of oil in 1938. This change added to Aramco's concession area and extended the period to 1999 in return for payments substantially higher than those specified in the first agreement and for larger quantities of free gasoline and kerosene to be supplied by Aramco to the Saudi government. In 1950 a fifty-fifty profit-sharing agreement was signed, whereby a tax (called an income tax, but actually a tax on each barrel of oil produced) was levied by the government. This tax considerably increased government revenues. Further revisions increased the government's shareslowly until the 1970s and rapidly thereafter. At the beginning of 1982, Aramco's concession area amounted to about 220,000 square kilometers (189,000 onshore and 31,000 offshore), having relinquished more than 80 percent of the original area of almost 1.3 million square kilometers.

ICRC delegates continued to visit places of detention holding people in connection with the Gulf war, and saw more than 600 detainees during the year. The majority of those visited were Iraqi, Jordanian, Yemeni and Sudanese nationals, Palestinians with only travel documents and stateless persons. Delegates had access to people held in detention facilities under the jurisdiction of the Ministries of the Interior (police stations, prisons and deportation centres), Defence and Social Affairs. Through its private talks with detainees and its contacts with the authorities, the ICRC sought to ensure that people under deportation orders (non-Kuwaiti residents of the country and illegal immigrants) were not expelled to a country where they had reason to fear persecution, that they had the opportunity to settle their personal affairs and were allowed to take their belongings with them, and that they were not separated from their close relatives. During the year 160 protected persons were expelled along with their families. The closure of the border between Iraq and Kuwait in February 1995 meant that the number of those expelled directly to Iraq subsequently fell considerably.

History Qatar played a low-key role in the Iran-Iraq war, generally on the side of Iraq, and was an active participant in the multinational alliance assembled to liberate Kuwait in 1990. During the early 1990s, the Emir adopted several independent initiatives in his conduct of foreign policy: there were burgeoning commercial relations with Israel and welcome support for American strategic objectives in the region (see below); yet Qatar was one of the few governments to maintain relations of any kind with the Taleban regime in Afghanistan. Around the same time, Qatar became involved in a number of territorial disputes with both Bahrain (over the oil rich Hawar islands) and Saudi Arabia, over the position of the border between the two countries.
    Government
Executive power is held exclusively by the Emir, a member of the Al-Thani family, which has ruled Qatar since independence. The Emir serves as both head of state and head of government. There is no independent legislature or political parties. Some decision-making is devolved to a Council of Ministers appointed by the Emir. A 30-strong advisory council with limited powers was created in 1972. The Emir's democrtisation plan envisages a 45 member parliament, of whom 30 will be popularly elected and 15 appointed by him.
