Transnational Issues Saudi Arabia Introduction Top of Page Background: In 1902 Abdul al-Aziz Ibn SAUD captured Riyadh and set out on a 30-year campaign to unify the Arabian peninsula. In the 1930s, the discovery of oil transformed the country. Following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, Saudi Arabia accepted the Kuwaiti royal family and 400,000 refugees while allowing Western and Arab troops to deploy on its soil for the liberation of Kuwait the following year. A burgeoning population, aquifer depletion, and an economy largely dependent on petroleum output and prices are all major governmental concerns. http://www.kfshrc.edu.sa/arabian/html/faq_geography.html
You are navigating: Saudi Arabia Links Arabian Advantures Q: Is Saudi Arabia all one big desert?
A: It is true that a large part of Saudi Arabia is desert, not only the great sand deserts such as the largest in the world, the famous Rub Al-Khali or Empty Quarter that covers most of the southern part of the country, but the wastelands of the rocky plateaus, gravel plains, and salt flats. In the west, however, there are mountain ranges running the full length of the Red Sea. Since there is high rainfall in the southwest, the escarpment in the Asir, Al-Baha and Jizan provinces is green and tree-clad, and the slopes are covered with terraces where for thousands of years farmers have grown a wide range of crops. Q: What is the Empty Quarter?
A: The Empty Quarter (Rub Al-Khali) is the largest sand desert in the world and occupies much of southern Saudi Arabia, bordering on Yemen, Oman and the Emirates. Most of it consists of massive rolling sand dunes, but to the west there are gravel plains that rise towards the mountains of the Asir, and to the east there are salt pans, near the Arabian Gulf. Oases are few, and movement has always been difficult. Oil has been found in its northeastern corner. Q: Is the Empty Quarter in Saudi Arabia really empty?

The Middle East, of which Saudi Arabia lies, is the birthplace of civilization. Pioneers of the era set the stage for the climb of civilization in countries such as Babylon, Nineveh and Egypt through the early development of farming communities, developing agriculture, trading and the invention of writing. Evidence shows that trading along the Fertile Crescent (stretches from present-day Iraq to Turkey), as well as with Egypt and the Roman Empire, dates back to 3000 B.C. Early trade merchandise includes limited agricultural products, spices, textiles, gold and frankincense. Although Saudi Arabia experienced significant development in a short period, the country's most remarkable growth was during the 1930s due to oil discovery (Royal, 1)."

GEOGRAPHY: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with an area of about 865,000 square miles, occupies the bulk of the Arabian Peninsula, located in the southwest of Asia. Saudi Arabia lies at the crossroads of three continents - Europe, Asia and Africa. It extends from the Red Sea in the west to the Arabian Gulf in the east. To the north, it borders on Jordan, Iraq and Kuwait, and to the south, on Yemen and Oman. To the east lie the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain. Saudi Arabian's terrain is varied but on the whole fairly barren and harsh, with salt flats, gravel plains and sand dunes and only a few lakes or permanent streams. In the south is the Rub Al-Khali (Empty Quarter), the largest sand desert in the world. In the southwest, the mountain ranges of Asir Province rise to over 9,000 feet. Sau·di A·ra·bi·a sou dē ə-rā bē-ə, s´ dē, s¤-Å« dē
A country occupying most of the Arabian Peninsula. Inhabited since ancient times by nomadic Semitic tribes, the region was consolidated under Muhammed, who established a theocratic state at Medina and gained control of all Arabia by 630. After the caliphate was moved from Medina to Damascus in 661, the peninsula remained fragmented until most of it was united in the 18th century under the Saud family, who adopted the Wahhabi form of Islam. Crushed by Egyptian and Ottoman opposition in the 19th century, Saudi forces reconquered the peninsula in the early 20th century. The unified kingdom of Saudi Arabia was created in 1932 as an absolute monarchy under Wahhabi law. Oil was discovered in 1932 and soon became the mainstay of the economy. Mecca, home of the holy Mosque and the Ka'abah Photo courtesy of the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia web site. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia occupies a highly important position in world affairs, as it is both the heartland of Islam and the possessor of the world's largest oil and gas reserves. Comprising most of the Arabian Peninsula, Saudi Arabia covers an area approximately the same size as Western Europe. Over 95 percent of the country is desert, including the world's largest sand desert the Rub al Khali (or "Empty Quarter") in the southeast, and the Nafud which stretches across the northwest of the peninsula. Saudi Arabia is considered to be the birthplace and spiritual center of Islam. Virtually all aspects of Saudi Arabian society are guided by Islamic ideals. The Koran is the basis of Saudi Arabia's constitution, while Shari'ah (Islamic law) is the basis of the country's legal system. Arabic is Saudi Arabia's official language and is considered a holy language by Muslims. Today, the majority of Saudi Arabians are Sunni Muslim, while a Shi'a minority is concentrated in the eastern province.

    http://al-islam.org/restatement/2.htm
Subject Index Search Announcements Feedback Restatement of History of Islam The Geography of Arabia It is a convention of historians to begin the history of a region with its geography. They do so partly because the drama of history is played out in the "theater" of its geographical backdrop; and partly because of the factor known in geopolitics as the "determinism of geography." It has been said that not only institutions but geography, climate, and many other conditions unite to form the influences which acting through successive generations, shape up the character of individuals and nations, and character plays a vital role in shaping up their history. The Arabian peninsula is the cradle of Islam. Islam was "born" in it, and "grew up" in it, and was already "full-grown" when it came out of it. It was in the Arabian cities of Makkah and Medina that the classic Islamic identity was evolved, and Islam actually "jelled." A grasp of the geography of Arabia, therefore, is necessary for the understanding of the drift of its history. Following is a synopsis of the geography of the Arabian peninsula: Arabia, like any other region, has the kind of terrain that molds and modifies those who live in it and move through it. It's a stern, grim and inhospitable land, and is or was, until the obtrusion of oil, a constant challenge for survival to the wits of man. His survival in it depended upon his ability to come to terms with it.
