    Teacher's Notes - Unit 1
    Where is Saudi Arabia?
A basic introduction to the location, and some of the basic facts about Saudi Arabia. An opportunity also to promote the value of geography to young people.
    Warm Up Activity
For this lesson you will need the following resources -
10 or more old newspapers Activity
. Working in pairs, ask the class to write down what they think geography is all about. Invite answers, and discuss points of interest.
. If it hasn't already arisen, point out to the class that geography is the subject that enables young people to learn about different cultures and places, and is really important in helping them understand current affairs, and what is happening in the world.
. To illustrate this, give each pair in the class a page from a newspaper (a good idea to proof it beforehand!). Ask them to highlight every time the name of a place or country appears on the page (those pupils really switched on may find over 50). Allow 5-10 minutes for this, and see which pair comes up with the most words. Once completed, drive home the fact that no other subject studies places and people the way that geography does, and if they want to understand the news, being a good geographer is crucial! Extension Activity
Hand out Worksheet 1.1, a newspaper article from the Daily Express, and a response from the Royal Geographical Society about Prince William's choice to do geography at University. Ask pupils to read aloud. Explain and summarise the main points of each argument. Ask pupils to write down the heading 'Geography - a subject fit for a king?' into their books, and then say how studying geography maybe of use to a future king!

After graduating in 1996 with a BA in Geography at King Saud University , Ali Aldosari worked for a year as a Geography Teacher in a high school in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In 1998 he became a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Geography, King Saud University. Ali was awarded a full scholarship in Geographical Information Systems by the Geography Department at King Saud University, Riyadh. Ali is a member of Saudi Geographical Society Research interests Ali's project uses GIS and remote sensing to study the transmission and outbreak of Rift valley Fever (RVF) in the Jizan region, Saudi Arabia. (Rift Valley Fever in the Jizan region, Saudi Arabia). He is supervised by Professor Bruce Webb Dr Timothy Quine and Dr Tim Coles The Jizan Region comprises a 200 miles strip of the Red Sea coastline, including 100 islands, in the extreme south-western corner of Saudi Arabia. The RVF outbreak struck the Saudi-Yemen border area in early September 2000. It is unusual because it is the first time that the disease has been known to strike outside Africa. The number of Saudi dead from RVF has climbed to 120. Furthermore, a total of 865 people have caught the fever in Saudi Arabia, of whom 739 have left hospital after treatment. In addition, more than 10,700 animals have died from the disease.
