The Rural Geography Study Group Newsletter May 2003 The Rural Geography Study Group has been increasingly active over the past few years. We had a very successful presence with special sessions at the 2002 (Toronto) and 2001 (Montréal) annual meetings of the CAG. In each year, eight sessions were either organized or sponsored by the Rural Geography Study Group. Highlights of activities over the past two years include: 1. 16 special sessions at 2 CAG meetings 2. Inaugural "Best Student Paper" Award in 2002. This award was presented to Valentine Cadieux of the University of Toronto. 3. An edited collection of papers from the 2001 and 2002 meetings (see below, Research Activities). 4. Discussions have been ongoing to develop a "course reader" modeled on the 50th anniversary issue of The Canadian Geographer . This will be an agenda item at the 2003 Study Group meeting at CAG in Victoria. 5. A total of 18 geographers working in Canada will be participating in the "

    Research Interests
My research experience has centered on tourism, initially through a critical examination of the development of ecotourism as an emerging tourism form in the late 1980s. My Masters research concentrated on various tourism models and their applicability in understanding the evolution of Montego Bay, Jamaica as a resort region. For my PhD research, I broadened my focus to include rural community economic development and the use of tourism as a strategy for economic diversification. My dissertation examined the use and spread of mural-based tourism to aid in determining the process and outcome of such strategies for rural communities. My plan is to continue to work in the area of community-based tourism development, focusing on the communities of Lake Superior. Teaching My philosophy of teaching has evolved based on my view that the role of a teacher is to nurture the formation of life long learning. As such, I believe it is my responsibility to provide a safe and respectful environment in which students can be challenged to learn communication and critical thinking skills through a variety of assignments and discussion/presentation occasions while providing a commensurate chance to learn about the subject material.

The "Little Saskatchewan" has had several other names. It was referred to as the River St. Peter by LaVerendrye. In 1806, Alexander Henry speaks of it as the "Rapid River". The Okanase people called it Keeseesatchewan , "Rapid Flowing River". Early Europeans called "Riding Mountain" the "Fort Dauphin Mountain". The Okanase Band called the mountain Wowwaswajicus , "The Hill of the Buffalo Chase".

Myth: Fact: Rolling hills, forests, and lakes are just part of the scenic beauty surrounding Saskatchewan's picturesque cities. Here is what some visitors have to say about North Battleford: "This place is an oasis."
"This is one of the prettiest places I've ever seen."
"I enjoyed the scenery so much it was hard to concentrate on my golf."
    Geography
North Battleford is a "special place" where the world's most fertile farmlands meet the awe-inspiring beauty of this province's 100,000 lakes, vast forests and the spectacular panorama of the North Saskatchewan River Valley.
    Climate
North Battleford enjoys more sunlight than most other Canadian cities. Winters are invigorating, and the moderate spring and fall bring a sense of vitality and colour that can compete for attention with the blazing prairie sunsets. The altitude of 1799 feet and the prevailing winds help to moderate the warm dry heat of summer. The air is pure, the sky is blue and the city is remote from areas identified as hazardous with regard to tornadoes, hurricanes and earthquakes.

To date, little is known on the morphodynamics supply-limited dunes, particularly in terms of how airflow, topography, vegetation and soil moisture interact to maintain active blowout and migrating parabolic dunes. In addition, seasonal and longer-term (decadal) climate variations that control the effectiveness of aeolian processes and dune maintenance are not well understood. The purpose of this project is to investigate the morphodynamics of the GSH dunes via 3 main objectives:
ii) to monitor onsite climate and sand transport conditions so as to assess seasonal variations in aeolian activity

The person hired would be invited to join the new Centre for Hydrology at the University with a recently established set of hydrological modelling, instrumentation and sampling laboratories, the CFI-funded Saskatchewan Watershed Research Facility, as well as a new suite of offices. The Centre is joint between colleges of Arts and Science, Agriculture and Engineering. There are several active research programmes in place in the Centre with further expansion anticipated. The University Integrated Plan includes developing the Centre for Hydrology within the strategic area of environmental sciences. There is also an excellent opportunity for collaboration with the scientists of the National Hydrology Research Centre on campus. Because of this cluster of institutions, facilities, and collaborative opportunities and due to the easy access to a wide range of critical hydrological issues. Saskatoon re mains a superb location for a hydrological research and education. The position advertisement can be found at http://www.usask.ca/geography/tenuretrack/hydrology.htm
