INTRODUCTION
The province of Saskatchewan is in the Great Plains region. It is bordered by Manitoba (E), Alberta (W), the United States (S) and the Northwest Territories (N). The southern border is the 49th parallel (which is the United States/Canada boundary). The 60th parallel is the northern boundary. Its shape resembles a rectangle. The area is 652,330 sq km (251,866 sq mi). Saskatchewan ranks fifth in size among the provinces of Canada.
NATURAL REGIONS
Saskatchewan lies in two major natural regions: the Canadian Shield (north) and the Interior Plains (south). The CANADIAN SHIELD makes up about forty percent of the surface area .
  • area - Its southern edge begins north of the Saskatchewan River at the Manitoba border, continues west-northwest across the province, through Lac La Ronge to the Alberta boundary south of Lake Athabasca.
  • landscape -The shield is an area of very old rocks ( which came from ancient mountains). Great glaciers moved across the shield creating an area dotted with thousands of lakes, rivers and bogs (poorly drained land).
South of the shield are the INTERIOR PLAINS. In the time of glaciers most of this lowland was under the waters of Lake Agassiz, a prehistoric lake. During the Ice Age a great delta ( deposits of earth and sand ) was formed. The Plains region is mostly flat with some gently rolling hills and valleys.

A. Geographic Description
The province of Saskatchewan lies north of the states of North Dakota and Montana. It is one of Canada's three prairie provinces and encompasses an area of 651,903 square kilometers (251,700 square miles). A population of approximately 1,000,000 people live in this vast land area today. More than sixty percent live in the two urban centres. The southern two thirds is mostly flat prairie. Before the first farmer came to Saskatchewan, herds of buffalo inhabited this land. The region was an expanse of windswept grasses.

Collecting Aquatic Invertebrates in the Frenchman River, Eastend, Saskatchewan What is the FRBP?

The Frenchman River Biodiversity Project (FRBP) is a multi-disciplinary research project in Saskatchewan that began in 2003 and will run until 2006. The aim is to assess the health of the Frenchman River and the sustainability of local activities by studying the aquatic biodiversity of the river and social interactions that affect the watershed. The FRBP is a joint undertaking of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum and the Canadian Museum of Nature, in partnership with local residents, university researchers, and representatives from provincial and federal government departments. The FRBP is a different sort of research project because local residents are playing a major role in how it develops and what it does. Hopefully, when the project is complete, local residents will be equipped with a community-based mechanism that they can use to keep the river healthy. Ecological monitoring in the schools
In early September 2004, science 9/10 students from Eastend and Val Marie monitored the Frenchman River as a unit in their school curriculum. Their activities were integrated into 12 scheduled classes stretched over an eight week period, with additional days spent on related activities or instruction. During a half-day field excursion, the students collected water samples from up to three sites along the Frenchman River. They also took photographs of the region, examined stream flow and water chemistry (pH, total dissolved solids, oxygen etc.), and identified aquatic invertebrates. The hope is that the students will exchange information with each other and contribute data to the FRBP's study of ecosystem health. If continued in the long-term, successive classes will develop a database of water quality and biodiversity information about the Frenchman River.
