A number of community organizations run by Métis citizens have undertaken festivals and days of celebration across the province. The Prince Albert Métis Fall Festival , the Métis Spring Fest in Saskatoon, Métis Days at St. Victoire by Assiniboia, Lebret Days; Crescent Lake are but a few examples of these activities. These celebrations, along with events across the Homeland remind us of the rich cultural traditions we have inherited. We encourage you to participate wherever possible and to show support to the many volunteers that make these celebrations possible. At this point in time, many of the artifacts and collections of art work and tools are held in various museums across the homeland and elsewhere. The MNS hopes to develop a specific archives and museum facility in the province where families can donate articles to the Metis Nation for safekeeping for generations to come. Michif is the official language of the Métis Nation although many of our people speak other Aboriginal languages such as Cree, Dene and Saulteaux. This committee is charged with the responsibility for developing strategies and plans for the maintenance and restoration of the Michif language. The Gabriel Dumont Institute has begun this work with a series of children's books and tapes, which can be ordered through the Institution's publication services. The federal government has a four-year Aboriginal languages program that throughout the Métis National Council the Métis were able to secure 10% for the preservation and enhancement of the Michif language. The MNS is currently in year three of the four-year program. Michif workshops were held in various locations throughout the province, in addition to several national ones.

T wo seemingly incompatible enthusiasms characterise the North as it faces the millennium: the onslaught of technology and a revival of Traditions and Culture. Historically the Heritage and Culture of Aboriginal people have been woven closely together. On this site we explore our people and their communities, our past, and our present through the use of technology. The people of the North believe that we cannot understand others before we have genuinely listened to them and know of their ways. We must recognise that we will never understand others until we have learned something of their Heritage and Culture. It is in this spirit that we bid you welcome to learn of ours.

76. Virtual Saskatchewan - Aboriginal Culture
Virtual saskatchewan will introduce you to engaging aboriginal figures from thepast and Celebrating 6000 years of Northern Plains Indian culture.
http://www.virtualsk.com/contact_us/aboriginal.html
For thousands of years before Europeans set foot in what is now Saskatchewan, aboriginal people made this land their home. Many of the unusual place-names in Saskatchewan are derived from First Nation languages. "Saskatchewan", for example, is taken from the Cree for "swift-flowing river." Today, our province is home to five First Nations peoples: Cree; Saulteaux; Dakota-Sioux; Assiniboine; and Dene. A sixth aboriginal group is the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan, people of North American Indian-European descent. Aboriginal culture is fascinating and rich. And it's a subject of growing interest, in no small part because people in developed nations are recognizing the need to respect and preserve their natural inheritance, a hallmark of traditional aboriginal belief. Virtual Saskatchewan will introduce you to engaging aboriginal figures from the past and present, delve into the tradition of story-telling, pass along some enchanting myths, and take you back a few thousand years to show you how the Northern Plains Indians lived in an area that's now Saskatchewan's biggest city. Check out the stories below and follow the link for more. In the meantime, here's a recipe for "bannock", the traditional, simple, and very popular Cree bread.

birch bark biter Sally Milne is also a university instructor and a medicine woman.
http://www.virtualsk.com/current_issue/culture_and_spirit.html
by Dave Yanko Sally Milne. LA RONGE In the early 1990s, Cree Elder Sally Milne decided she was going to become the best in the world at something. Precisely what that something was going to be, she didn't know. In fact at the time, she didn't know why she felt so compelled to excel. Milne first considered cross-country skiing. She had very little experience with the winter sport. But the date of a popular, all-abilities competition was approaching and she thought the event might be a good opportunity to measure her potential. Before it arrived, however, event organizers asked her to provide some prizes in the form of birch bark bitings she'd just recently begun to create. . . "I'm now one of the four most renowned bark biters in the world,'' Milne proclaims, her small smile growing into a hearty laugh as she adds: "There's a total of four of us in the world!'' Of course the last part is not true Milne's humor is often self-deprecating and seldom far from the surface during a chat at the La Ronge Band RCMP office where she works as an aboriginal resource person. The truth is that in less than 10 years, her exquisite designs have found their way into homes in Germany, Austria, England, Scotland, China, Australia and New Zealand. Here in North America, Canadian Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson and Hollywood movie star Bruce Willis are among those who own and admire her birch bark bitings.
