http://www.ukrweekly.com/Archive/2004/490453.shtml
Protests held in Saskatchewan cities of Saskatoon and Regina by Danylo Puderak SASKATOON - The support for Ukrainians currently protesting the falsified presidential election results in their homeland spread to Saskatchewan's two largest cities last week. Members of Regina's Ukrainian-Canadian community gathered at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building on Tuesday, November 23, while upwards of 100 attended a rally at Saskatoon City Hall on Wednesday, November 24. Each gathering protested the flawed presidential election in Ukraine and supported the people of Ukraine and their democratically elected president, Viktor Yushchenko. Supporters at both locations wore orange in a show of solidarity with Mr. Yushchenko's opposition movement. They brought Ukrainian flags and carried signs calling for democracy in Ukraine and unity among its people. In Regina, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Myron Kowalsky met with the group and invited all for discussion and coffee. Eugene Krenosky, president of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Saskatchewan Pronvial Council (UCC-SPC), joined the group to present the official position from the council. Asking the speaker to pass the comments on to Saskatchewan Premier Lorne Calvert, Mr. Krenosky requested that the provincial government urge the federal government of Canada to demonstrate strong leadership nationally and internationally regarding the less-than-democratic Ukrainian election.

Competitive Advantages - KMPG Study
The Advantages
  • Saskatchewan's centres are cost-competitive in all 12 sectors studied, and particularly competitive in biomedical research and development (Saskatchewan average is 68.1), electronic systems testing and development (63.0), software design (78.3) and Web development (76.7). Note that 100 equals the indexed, average cost of doing business in the U.S. Saskatchewan businesses enjoy many advantages over their counterparts in other parts of North America. Some of those advantages include: lower land and housing costs; a highly-skilled workforce; a diversified economy; a reasonably priced and reliable supply of electricity, natural gas, water and telecommunications services; a comprehensive, quality education system and a health care system that is second to none. As well, competitive labour costs and employer-provided benefits are major cost advantages for Saskatchewan. Among the 42 Canadian cities in the report, all four Saskatchewan cities rank better than the Canadian average (the overall cost leader among all countries with a cost index of 85.5 representing a 14.5% cost advantage over the U.S.) with Prince Albert at 83.4, Moose Jaw at 83.6, Saskatoon at 84.9 and Regina at 85.3.

Saskatchewan Cities Competitive - February 19, 2004
KPMG released a study yesterday that confirms Saskatchewan cities compare
positively to other jurisdictions when it comes to the cost of doing business. The international cost-competitiveness survey compared cities in 11 countries
including Canada. Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert and Moose Jaw ranked
favourably in the report when compared with cities in North America, Europe,
Australia and Japan. Canadian cities remain the most cost competitive in the 2004 study, virtually
little change from a previous study conducted in 2002. Saskatoon ranked second
in the North American mid-west major cities, with an index of 89.4, just slightly behind Edmonton (89.2). KPMG included in the analysis several non-featured cities in which Prince Albert ranked first in the mid-west with an index score of 87.6. Moose Jaw was tied for third with a score of 88.3 along with Brandon, Grande Prairie and Lethbridge. Regina ranked ninth place with a score of 90.5. "We recognize that making sure Saskatchewan has an attractive business climate that can compete with international jurisdictions is a must to ensure our

Saskatchewan Travel Guide- Yes, Saskatchewan is flat, which is why many people dismiss it as a vacation destination. But we think it has a lot of treasures-like its domed Ukrainian churches-that are made more remarkable by the dramatically stark landscape that surrounds them. Take museums, for instance: Nearly every community in the province has its own collection of historical exhibits, as if these were needed to validate the town's existence in such a wide and empty land. These small facilities, along with the many larger museums and living-history sites, make Saskatchewan a great stop for those interested in Native American culture and the history of western Canada. Hunting and fishing enthusiasts will also find this largely rural province to be an exceptional destination. It has a wide variety of game to pursue-ducks, geese, deer, bears, moose, northern pike, walleye, rainbow trout-and hundreds of outfitters to help you collar them.

Saskatoon and Saskatchewan both tops in cycling,
2001 Census shows
More people, per capita, ride bicycles to work in Saskatoon than any other prairie city. Among provinces, Saskatchewan leads the prairies in its proportion of commuter cyclists. Figures from the 2001 Census show that Saskatoon has the second-highest proportion of cyclists of all major Canadian cities, twice the national average. Saskatchewan has the second-highest proportion of cyclists of all provinces. Other Saskatchewan cities included in the Census data that were above the Canadian average of 1.2 percent were: Regina, 1.4 percent; North Battleford, 1.7 percent; and Moose Jaw, 1.6 percent. "Saskatoon is one of the best cycling cities in Canada," says Darrell Noakes, a CAN-BIKE national examiner and owner of Borealis Outdoor Adventure. "We have everything that makes a city great and makes cycling enjoyable. In fact, most of Saskatchewan's communities offer ideal cycling environments."

Byers can challenge results On April 5, the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal upheld the earlier Court of Queen's Bench ruling that NDP candidate Wayne Byers can challenge last fall's election results from the Lloydminster constituency. Byers lost to Sask Party MLA Milt Wakefield by just 64 votes. The NDP has noted that a number of voters at the Jubilee Nursing Home were disenfranchised when staff at the home prevented the poll clerk from taking the ballot box and other election materials to residents. In addition, the NDP alleges that an article published in a Lloydminster newspaper cost more voters the chance to go to the polls when the constituency's Returning Officer allegedly confused voters about when the polls were open. Part of the constituency is on Mountain Time, while the remainder is on Central Time.
