What It Is Who Gets It ... Links What It Is, What It Isn't Sarcoidosis is a relatively rare autoimmune disease that can affect the skin, lungs, heart, brain and nervous system, eyes, and other organs. Although the disease was first recognized about 100 years ago, little is known about what causes it and there is no cure. As an autoimmune disease, sarcoidosis is similar to diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus in how it behaves and how it is treated. Depending on the severity, treatment may be needed to control what sarcoidosis does. Sarcoidosis can go dormant on its own or with treatment, and its symptoms often do not recur after the initial onset. In a small percentage of cases, sarcoidosis is chronic, requiring on-going treatment, with possible occurrence in other organ systems. Chronic sarcoidosis is apparently cyclic in its activity level, with flares of symptoms and more dormant periods lasting weeks or months. No markers have been identified as indicating how sarcoidosis is going to behave in any individual or how an individual with sarcoidosis is going to respond to treatment, although a physician experienced with sarcoidosis may be able to make a "good guess" based on his or her experience. Whether he or she is willing to voice that guess is another story entirely! Despite a century of research, little is known about sarcoidosis. Research has discovered what it is not. Among other things, it is not a cancer or tuberculosis or AIDS-related. It is not caused by pine pollen or other identifiable agents like pollution, airborne or otherwise. It is not progressive or contagious. You did not get it from someone else and you cannot give it to another person. As far as we know, nothing you did specifically caused your sarcoidosis.

After extensive tests I was told I had the disease only in my lungs. The fact that I have this disease amazed my Doctors because according to studies this disease only affects Afro-Americans and Caucasion of European backgrounds especially Scandanavian. I would like to know more information on this disease; I have only been told it is rare. My physician just said that it is a type of lung infection that could go into remission just as it occured. From reading the comments that doesn't seem to be true. September 08, 1999 - Alka

READER COMMENTS Back to Original Summary and Current Reader Comments Jan - Mar, 2002 Apr - Jun, 2002 Jul - Sep, 2002 ... Nov - Dec, 1997 February 24, 1998 - Christopher I have pulmonary sarcoidosis. The more I find out about this disease the more I become scared and anxious. My doctor wants me to start on steroids (prednisone) but I am scared of possible side affects. My questions are; are there support groups in the Buffalo NY area, what are the real side effects of prednisone, where can I get more information? Thank You. February 24, 1998 - Sherri I mainly have a question: My sarcoidosis is seemingly chronic, as I have been plagued now for at least 6 years with continual problems and symptoms without a break; although it does seem to move from organ to organ. Because I have hepatitis C, as well as Sarcoidosis, I can not do the therapies for either one as one therapy can exacerbate the other disease. So if anyone knows of a therapy to do for Sarcoidosis, that will NOT decrease my immune system, it would help me to know. Also - I have been diagnosed now, by a liver biopsy, with it in my liver along with the hepatitis C. I just had a tongue biopsy - as my tongue has had a lesion growing on it, that my dentist suspects sarcoid. I've never heard of that; has anyone else? February 24, 1998 - Ruth

Overview More than 100 conditions make up the group of disorders called interstitial lung disease. Most of them cause progressive scarring of lung tissue that eventually affects your ability to breathe and obtain enough oxygen, but beyond this, the disorders vary greatly. Although the majority of cases of interstitial lung disease develop gradually with few warning signs, a few come on suddenly. Some are more common in men than in women, but a few affect women exclusively. And although doctors can pinpoint why some cases of interstitial lung disease occur, most have no known cause. In all cases, lung scarring, once it occurs, is generally irreversible. Corticosteriod drugs, the most common treatment, occasionally can slow the damage of interstitial lung disease, but many people never regain full use of their lungs. Researchers hope that newer drugs, many of them still in the experimental stage, may eventually prove more effective than steroids.
