September 8, 2005 Attention, Nonprofit Organizations Helping Hurricane Katrina Victims Having been a resident in the New Orleans metro area for approximately 45 of my 57 years, I want to give thanks to those aiding the recent hurricane victims. As is with the animal organizations, I wish I had the funds to donate directly myself, but other than offering my home to human and nonhuman hurricane victims, offering the use of this fundraising program is the only means I have to help. The Aid For Animals, Inc. fundraising program will now be doing business as: Aid For Animals and Humanity Nonprofit organizations aiding human or nonhuman victims of hurricane Katrina are invited to participate in our fundraising program. Animal Rescue Vanishing Species Wildlife obtains most of our animals through: Confiscations While it is legal to own a variety of large, exotic, and endangered species of animals, rules and regulations must be followed that govern animal ownership and care. When an exotic animal owner does not have the appropriate paperwork or does not take proper care of their animal, authorities will step in and confiscate the animal. These animals are then found a home in a reputable animal facility, such as Vanishing Species Wildlife, Inc. Surrenders Many people who purchase a pet tiger, panther, or other exotic animal focus on the cuddly little bundle of joy in their hands, and ignore the fact that many exotic animals will grow to hundreds of pounds, eat lots of food, and require constant care. In other instances students who move away to college or into a more strictly zoned location, may not be able to take the animal with them. When owners decide they no longer want an animal, cannot afford the animal, or the owner moves, becomes sick, unemployed, or dies, they may surrender the animal to a reputable animal facility, such as Vanishing Species Wildlife, Inc.

However, the unfortunate potential to harm our marine life and resources exists with every visit. Because we love our marine resources and want you to appreciate them, the National Marine Sanctuary Program see every visitor as a potential steward of our sanctuary resources. The Ocean Etiquette program calls on each of you to take on that responsibility. We have listed below a set of general marine wildlife viewing guidelines. SINGAPORE'S first wildlife rescue centre could be set up on Pulau Ubin, to provide a home for illegal animals brought into Singapore and confiscated by the authorities. The non-profit animal-rights group Acres has received in-principle approval from the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) to set up the shelter, which will house primates, small carnivores and non-venomous snakes. 'We can't go on giving these animals to the zoo, which simply doesn't have the room,' Acres president Louis Ng said on Wednesday. 'So the centre would be like a halfway house for the animals before they are repatriated to other countries, though we may have to keep some of them for life.' But before it raises the estimated $500,000 needed to set up the facility, Acres is waiting for the Singapore Land Authority - which suggested several sites on Ubin - to get approval from the Law Ministry for use of the land, he added.

    Animals and Animal Sanctuaries
India is the home of hundreds of species of mammals, reptiles, and thousands of birds. The varied climate and landscape make it an ideal place for the wildlife. The rivers and the dense forests of the western Ghats add to the ecosystem, encouraging further growth.
To protect this national treasure, India has many wildlife sanctuaries and protection laws. Currently, there are about 80 national parks and 441 sactuaries. One of the most famous of these is Project Tiger, intended to protect the Bengal tigerIndia's national animal. But there are others, throughout the country, each showcasing the animals unique to that region.
    National Parks and Sanctuaries:
    • The Great Himalayan National Park in the state of Himachal Pradesh has both dense forests and mountain peaks that give way to valleys with many types of wildlife. The Tirthan valley has animals such as the black bear, leopard, and several types of mountain goats. There are also Himalayan birds (some unique to this state) like the colorful monal, golden eagle, and the red tragopan.
    • Dudhwa National Park , in the Uttar Pradesh, is also a northern tiger sanctuary. It displays fishing cats, wild pigs, the sloth bear, and the Indian rhinoceros. This park has extensive grasslands and many swamp areas that are home to birds including several types of storks, cranes, and the Great Indian Horned Owl.

ANALYSIS OF RESPONSES TO THE CONSULTATION DOCUMENT 'PROPOSALS TO REVISE EXISTING ANIMAL WELFARE LEGISLATION'
    (16) Animal sanctuaries
Paragraph 42 of the consultation document stated: Animal sanctuaries are not subject to any regulation and most are run as independent organisations or charities by people who have the welfare interests of the animals as the overall objective. However, there have been cases, despite the best of intentions, where the facilities for the animals have fallen short of acceptable welfare standards. In some cases animals have been found to be suffering from severe neglect. We think that there is considerable support for the licensing of such establishments. Do you agree? Overview 91 responses were received on this subject. Responders included 14 sanctuaries and rescue organisations; 13 canine organisations; 4 feline organisations; 17 local authorities and their local authority organisation, LACORS; one police force and its police organisation, ACPOS; 19 individuals also responded. Background: activities undertaken by sanctuaries A number of these premises were run by organisations that have a Great Britain-wide jurisdiction. These included The Dogs Trust, Cats Protection, and The ILPH. The Scottish SPCA has a Scotland wide network of premises.

NY TIMES NEWS SERVICE , NEW DELHI
Wednesday, May 25, 2005,Page 5 Advertising On Monday, one year and a day after becoming prime minister of India, Manmohan Singh traveled to Ranthambore National Park, the celebrated sanctuary of India's national animal: the tiger. The visit to Ranthambore Tiger Reserve was less a warm and fuzzy photo opportunity than an attempt to take on a budding political crisis. The tiger, as endangered worldwide as it is iconic in this country, is vanishing from India's tiger parks. With a growing and lucrative market for everything tiger from skin to bone to the tiger's penis, used in Chinese traditional medicine tiger poachers have evidently had a run on several government-protected parks. A handful of poaching networks have been nabbed here in the capital in recent months, and their bundles of carefully tanned tiger skins displayed to a news media hungry for as much tiger-poaching copy as possible.
