Farm animal sanctuaries
Since I became vegetarian nearly three-and-a-half years ago, I've done as much as I can to learn about my diet and its affect on animals, the environment, and my health. I feel like I've gotten to a pretty good point where I'm "nearly vegan" and though that's good, I wanted to contribute even more directly to animal welfare in a way that wasn't as self-focused. A few months ago, I started to volunteer at Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary . I'm still just a beginner when it comes to farm work, but I've learned so much from Terry, Dave, and all the great volunteers and employees at Poplar Spring. I've learned the best way to carry a lamb, how best to pick up a piglet, what can happen if horses and mules eat too much grass during the springtime, and why young pigs need suntan lotion. I've also seen first hand how farm animals have very individual personalities, just like dogs and cats, which has deepened my resolve for being vegetarian. It's certainly not the most glamorous work in the world, but I look forward to it each and every time I go. It's very rewarding to know I'm directly affecting animals that have been victims of the pain, torture, and neglect associated with food production, ritual sacrifice, and even animal hoarding. Something I've found is that not many people realize that sanctuaries for farm animals even exist. Heck

In June 2005 Defra set up a working group to examine issues relating to the welfare of racing greyhounds. Further information on the work of this group is available on this website. Defra is responsible for policy on general animal welfare, which covers the welfare of all domestic and captive animals. We have previously consulted on what should be contained in future animal welfare law - for more information please consult Analysis of the Replies to the Public Consultation In the light of this consultation we published a draft Animal Welfare Bill on 14 July 2004. The Bill, which is available from the Official Documents Website , marks a milestone in animal welfare legislation. It brings together and modernises all welfare legislation relating to farmed and non-farmed animals. Among other things it introduces a duty on owners and keepers of all vertebrate animals - not just farmed animals - to promote the welfare of animals in their care. It will mean that where necessary those responsible for the enforcement of welfare laws can take action where an animal, although not currently suffering, is in a situation where its welfare is compromised.

ODE TO AN ANIMAL SANCTUARY Many people in the animal rights movement dream of living and working on an animal sanctuary, a place of refuge which provides a lifetime of care for abandoned, abused, neglected, and unwanted animals. In reality to fulfill such a dream requires a lot of energy and devotion. Even animal liberationists just back from a rescue, can sometimes forget, that for the sanctuary worker their work is just beginning. As we all know each animal is a unique individual. Having rescued animals, one sees there are problems of establishing new pecking orders, there are squabbles that need sorting out, integrating new arrivals with other sanctuary residents and a whole array of unforeseen difficulties which require addressing – not least of all being funding. We spoke about the experiences and challenges of animal sanctuaries with two animals activists from different sides of the globe. Gene Baston , from Animal Sanctuary in America and Bede Carmody from the Atchin Tan Sanctuary in NSW. Here are the results.

A growing sanctuary bought by a group of us 7 years ago after an exhaustive appeal to raise £85,000 in 7 weeks to buy the property. We have approx 150 animals at any time, mostly dogs and cats but also rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets. We employ 8 staff and rely on an army of volunteers. Animals are vaccinated, neutered and micro chipped. An Animal Behaviourist is on site and Educational programmes have emphasis on cross community relationships. We offer free cat neutering to those on reduced incomes.
N Ireland has an abyssmal record in Animal Welfare. Last year over 6000 healthy stray dogs were destroyed. We at Assisi are running a 'Chance of a Lifetime' campaign where, by special arrangements, we are transferring 20 to 30 dogs to England each fortnight where they are placed in loving homes. These dogs come mostly from council pounds across the province and would otherwise be destroyed. The dogs travel overnight by boat in a specially fitted van driven by Committee members. This is virtually a military exercise with travel and collection across the province. So far this year we have transferred over 500 dogs. We are bearing the cost of approx £300 each fortnight and don't know how long we can maintain the costs. Assisi depends totally on fundraising and donations. So our Wish List would be any help available to help us help these ill-fated dogs.

(photo: Farm Sanctuary) "Family farms are being replaced with large-scale factory farms, where animals are treated like unfeeling commodities and subjected to institutionalized abuse. That's why Farm Sanctuary was formed."
That's a direct quote from one of the most progressive thinking organizations in the movement, Farm Sanctuary. Farm Sanctuary, and a few others like it, are in the forefront of the movement to wage effective campaigns to stop farm animal cruelty. In addition, related issues like "Downers", anti-veal", and the recognition of animals as "Sentient Beings" are being fought over in addition to their obvious promotion of vegan lifestyles.

A Place of Refuge and Protection

text and photos by Greta Gardner
You may have heard of Best Friends. It has an international reputation, with members located all over the globe. They publish their own award-winning magazine and have a weekly radio show. Even Hollywood throws an annual star-studded fundraising party for the sanctuary. But it was not always this well-known.
Best Friends sponsors countrywide spay/neuter programs and adoptathons. Their ultimate goal is to see a time when there are no more homeless pets. Not all of the animals at the sanctuary are adoptable. Some have been severely abused, require extra medical attention or have other special needs. These animals find a forever home at Best Friends. They are cared for with kindness and will live out their remaining years in peace within the walls of Angel Canyon.
For more information on the Best Friends Animal Society, visit their website at: www.bestfriends.org
Greta Gardner works for a national insurance company and shares her life with two wonderfully social dogs and two homebody cats.
