Time for ASM 1.40! - note that if you didn't upgrade to 1.39 then you still need to import your media. This is purely a bug fix release, curing MacOSX display problems, some 64-bit Linux performance issues, broken icons, Linux PNG support (so David's icons look much nicer) and many minor bugs squashed.

I'm back from holiday and had an excellent time! Once again, thanks to Gary and Jane of nwrr for their hospitality on the way down (and it's nice to put faces to names after all this time!). If anyone's interested, I stuck up a few photos here
3rd May, 2005
1.39 is finally out - I made the decision to get it out today so there's at least 2 days for anyone to report anything unpleasant and for it to be fixed before I go away. Note that so much has changed with 1.39 that you cannot download a replacement jar - you should rerun the appropriate client installer for your platform (don't forget to untick the server box if you are using Windows and already have an ASM server setup on your machine). Note that you will still need to reimport your old media after updating to 1.39 (see instructions below).

Killing With Kindness

Chocolates are readily available around many homes but how many people know that human chocolate can cause serious harm to animals, espcially dogs?
Chocolate aimed at humans contains a chemical called theobromine which is toxic to dogs, it can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, convulsions, even death.
Cocoa powder is the most toxic, followed by dark and then milk chocolate.
So please remember to put those boxes of chocolates out of the reach of your animals and if you want to give your dog a chocolate treat stick to special doggie chocolate drops which you can buy from pet shops.

Teckels Animal Sanctuaries is a registered charity formed in November 2003 as a merger between two long running animal rescue charities, who have rescued thousands of cats and dogs over the years: We presently have an animal sanctuary and boarding kennels in Whitminster, Gloucestershire and rescue cats and dogs in Swindon, Wiltshire via temporary foster homes. Our eventual aim is to build a second animal sanctuary in the Swindon Area.
special poppy appeal!
Poppy is 9 years old, and due to having surgery on her back she is now paralysed. We are trying to raise the funds to buy a 'Wheel Chair' (doggy of course) for her. Her front legs are strong and she can get around really well if her back legs are supported. She is still very interested in balls and with the mobility a wheel chair will give her she can live a very happy life. We need to raise about £350. Any amount, no matter how small, will help. 33. Interview With Gene Baston And Bede Carmody About Animal Sanctuaries
What is your position on purchasing animals to live on your sanctuaries? sanctuaries are hard work but they are an essential part to the animal rights

ODE TO AN ANIMAL SANCTUARY Many people in the animal rights movement dream of living and working on an animal sanctuary, a place of refuge which provides a lifetime of care for abandoned, abused, neglected, and unwanted animals. We spoke about the experiences and challenges of animal sanctuaries with two animals activists from different sides of the globe. Gene Baston , from Animal Sanctuary in America and Bede Carmody from the Atchin Tan Sanctuary in NSW. Here are the results. Are animals at the sanctuary allowed to breed? GENE: There is no breeding allowed at Farm Sanctuary. For the mammals, the males are neutered, and for the birds, we collect the eggs so they cannot incubate. What do you do with male animals, which by nature fight each other. How do you deal with unwanted roosters and drakes, for example? GENE: We keep the population of our males down to minimize fighting. So, unfortunately, we cannot provide sanctuary for all the males, or females for that matter, who need sanctuary. Are you always being asked to take in male animals which are unwanted because of their sex? How do you cope with these problems?

Black Beauty Ranch In the rolling hills of eastern Texas, The Fund operates this world-famous 1,300-acre sanctuary for more than 900 abused or abandoned animals. The residents of Black Beauty Ranch include elephants rescued from circuses and roadside zoos, chimpanzees rescued from laboratory research, bison rescued from canned hunts, horses and burros evicted from public lands, and many other animals who now live in peace and tranquility. Readers of Cleveland Amory's last book, "Ranch of Dreams," will remember many heartwarming stories about this safe haven for animals. Wildlife Rehabilitation Center In southern California, injured and orphaned wild animals are restored to health and back to their native wild homes, thanks to The Fund's 24-hour medical facility. The center includes premium rehabilitation enclosures for animals such as mountain lions, coyotes, and raccoons, and the largest free-flight raptor aviary in the world. Cindy Traisi's book, "Because They Matter," is about some of the animals who have received treatment at the The Fund's Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.
