US Department Of State Post Report Samoa has one television station that broadcasts a half-hour, mixed Samoan and English news nightly. New Zealand news is also beamed in via satellite. In July 2001, the BBC news began broadcasting a few hours a day. Nightly, a B-rated English movie is shown along with various sitcoms imported from the U.S. and New Zealand. Local television operates on the European PAL system; videotapes available locally are made for the same system; however, American NTSC videos are also readily available for rent. In order to enjoy programming and videotapes available in Samoa, as well as American videotapes, it is necessary to have a multisystem TV/VCR that can handle both PAL and U.S. NTSC systems. ... In February, police in American Samoa uncovered a prostitution ring in which up to 40 young women from Independent Samoa were lured to American Samoa with the promise of work as waitresses; once there, they allegedly were forced into prostitution. The Government cooperated with the American Samoan authorities' investigation and deported an alleged leader of the ring, who had fled to Independent Samoa, back to American Samoa for prosecution. The six Samoan women found in a brothel operated by the ring when the authorities acted to close it down returned to Independent Samoa. ... [

At independence in 1962, Samoa signed a Treaty of Friendship with New Zealand. This treaty confirms the special relationship between the two countries and provides a framework for their interaction. Under the terms of the treaty, Samoa can request that New Zealand act as a channel of communication to governments and international organizations outside the immediate area of the Pacific islands. Samoa also can request defense assistance, which New Zealand is required to consider (Samoa does not maintain a formal military). Overall Samoa has strong links with New Zealand, where many Samoans now live and many others were educated. ... [

    Fa'a Samoa
Fa'a Samoa, means the Samoan Way. This is an all encompassing concept that dictates how Samoans are meant to behave. It refers to the obligations that a Samoan owes their family, community and church and the individuals sense of Samoan identity. The concept of respect is also very important. You must always respect you betters, this includes those older than you, matais, ministers, politicians doctors and teachers. This unquestioning demand for respect is taking its toll in modern Samoa as the younger generation, which is invariably better educated than its predecessors, constantly finds itself trying to balance the demands of a conservative Samoan society with its knowledge of the world, increasingly gathered from overseas education and experience. This has lead to one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Fa'a Samoa is also evident in the legal system which is actually two seperate systems, a western style system administered by a police force and justice department, and a traditional system administered at a village level. The two systems do occaisionally come into conflict with one another but generally things work smoothly enough. Modified: 23/11/97 Matai System

The word matai means chief, and is an honour that is bestowed upon someone. The role of the matais is very complex and interwoven deep into the fabric of Samoan culture and history. Matais have family, civic, political and prior to the arrival of the European, religious duties to perform.

If you drew a triangle from Hawaii, New Zealand and Tahiti you would find Samoa in the middle. Western Samoa is a neighboring independent country that shares the same culture. American Samoa became an unorganized U.S. territory in 1900. The Samoas arguably represent the largest population of polynesian people and they take pride in a strong culture that has survived outside incursions amazingly well.

Neighbouring American Samoa, just to the south east, shares an identical culture and language but was taken over by America in 1899 and remains a US territory. [edit this] [Change image] [Upload image] The Samoa Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean. Western Samoa is an independent country. American Samoa is part of the United States. Both groups of islands were discoverd by the same ecplorer Jacon Roggeveen and share one culture. The islands of Western Samoa are known for white sand beaches, rugged forested mountains, steep gorges, numerous waterfalls, lava fields, blowholes, dormant volcanoes and coconut plantations. Many many people think of Samoa thanks to the works of the Scottish author Robert L. Stevenson and his book on the "Treasure Island.". Actually Samoa consists of two major islands and seven smaller ones. Upolu is the most densely populated of the two main islands of Samoa. The Capital of Samoa is Apia , which is located in the north. Also the international airport is located here. The other island named Savaii is a fascinating island and the local people live life at an easy and gentle pace. Total land area is 2934 square km. There is an exclusive marine economic zone covering some 130,000 sq km. The islands are volcanic and dominated by rugged mountain ranges with a 4-5 km skirt of gently sloping fertile land to which is attached a fringe of coral reefs and lagoons that surround the islands.
