Contents Our Guest Book appears after the Announcements. Please take a few moments to leave your message or comments. Introduction Camberwell Corps is the Salvation Army church serving its community in South East London. The Corps (No. 276) first opened its doors 119 years ago, on 30th May 1882, as the base from which it reaches out to bring the message of Jesus and his love to the people of the area. The Corps is part of The Salvation Army United Kingdom Territory with the Republic of Ireland (Territorial Commander: Commissioner Alex Hughes) and is in the London Central Division (Divisional Commander: Major John Wainwright) which covers the area where The Salvation Army began. We have strong links too with William Booth College at Denmark Hill (Principal: Lt.Col. Robert Street) and many officers will remember the 'village' as their earthly home for a while. The Corps is Covenant Partner with Springfield Lodge Resettlement Centre, also in Camberwell. The centre is part of the Army's Social Services Children and Families ministry and takes homeless young men who need help. Their site is listed in the Links section. We also have our own very close community involvement through The Dawn Project.

William Stead, the son of a Congregational minister, was born in Embleton in 1849. William spent his childhood at Howden, about five miles from Newcastle . Educated at home by his father, William grew up with strong views on religion. At the age of fourteen he was apprenticed to a merchant but this failed to interest him and he eventually became a journalist.
In 1871 he moved to Darlington where he became editor of the Northern Echo . Stead was a strict Puritan who favoured social reform. He declared soon after becoming editor of the newspaper, "the Press is the greatest agency for influencing public opinion in the world" and that "the true and only lever by which thrones and governments could be shaken and the masses of the people raised".
Stead successfully made the Northern Echo the most influential voice of Nonconformity in the North of England. His newspaper supported several causes and organisations, including universal education, votes for women, repeal of the

The Salvation Army is deploying additional mobile rescue units and staffing throughout Texas and neighboring states to assist in Hurricane Rita response efforts that are expected to at least equal the manpower and equipment utilized for Katrina during the past four weeks. Before Hurricane Rita makes landfall this weekend, emergency response crews are preparing to serve as many as 560,000 hot meals per day at designated shelters and from vehicles dispatched from the staging areas to hardest hit locations. The Army works in conjunction with federal, state and local agencies to immediately provide meals and assist with sheltering those affected by storms, and has already provided more than 4 million meals to Katrina survivors.

Formed in 1835 and soon advocated teetotalism. One important figure in the movement was the Catholic priest, Theobald Matthew, who persuaded thousands of people in Ireland to sign the pledge. Quakers, members of the salvation army and nonconformists were also active participants.

In Joseph Livesey and seven Preston workingmen signed a pledge that they would never again drink alcohol. Other groups of working men followed the example of Livesey and his friends and by 1835 the British Association for the Promotion of Temperance was formed.
At first temperance usually involved a promise not to drink spirits and members continued to consume wine and beer. However, by the 1840s temperance societies began advocating teetotalism. This was a much stronger position as it not only included a pledge to abstain from all alcohol for life but also a promise not to provide it to others.
The artist, George Cruikshank , whose own father, Isaac Cruikshank , had died of alcoholism, played an important role in helping in persuading people to join the movement by producing a series of books on the subject: this included The Bottle T he Drunkard's Children (1848) and The Worship of Bacchus One of the most important figures in the temperance movem ent was the Catholic priest
