Background of the Sport
Sailing uses the wind to power the boat's motion. It's not as much by pushing the sail (as is the case when sailing downwind) but by creating forward-pulling lift using airfoil-shaped sails (when sailing across or into the wind). The joy of sailing combines the joy of being on the water, the power you feel in harnessing natural forces, and with the thrill of going fast without significant energy on your part.
Sailing dates back to the ancient Phoenician traders, though the technology of sailboats has improved dramatically over the years. Innovations in the past 50 years include fibreglass hulls, metal masts and booms, synthetic sails, computer controlled laser cut and sewn sails, and computer aided design for boat hulls have made sail boats faster, safer, cheaper, and easier to maintain.
Small sailboats under 20 feet in length come in two main configurations: either single hull or multi-hull (like a catamaran). They typically have one mast, one mainsail (the big one), and a jib (the small triangular at the front, to direct the wind around the mainsail), and sometimes a spinnaker (the large round-shaped one for going downwind). Small boats are designed for a limited number of people to crew, with them either sitting in or around the cockpit (which may be a tightly stretched tarp between the catamaran hulls), or supported from a trapeze rig over the edge of the boat (in high winds). Smaller boats with centreboards include modles like Albacores and Lasers.

Sailing Ships in Colonial Times Model Ships in Commerce [ Sailing for Recreation ] Yacht Racing and Cruising The Recreational Sail Collection, 1870 to 1940 The period after the rise of the clipper ships saw Americans testing their mettle in sail races of all kinds. Even the Grand Banks schooners, built to speed their catch to market, raced each other, although with considerably less pomp than the yacht club set. The American Historic Sail Racing Yacht Collection emphasizes the development of the wooden racing yacht designed by famous American naval architects. Here we see the development of the first marconi rigs and the first cruising yawls and ketches. The AHS recreational yacht collection includes the following ships:
  • Chapelle's 57 foot topsail cruising schooner Scrapper II , Massachusetts Bay racing sloop, 1912 Jay Dee , Chesapeake Bay racing canoe, 1931 America , First winner of the "America's Cup" Malabar VI , One John Alden's famous developmental Schooners

A History of the Cal Sailing Club
by Paul Kamen , former CSC Commodore March 29, 1995
(revised June 23, 1997) Most universities that are located near large bodies of water have a single sailing facility which serves multiple functions. These usually include sailing instruction, recreational sailing, and intercollegiate competitive sailing. Up until about 1970, this was the case at U.C. Berkeley. A single organization served all the sailing-related needs of the University community. But at that time the U.C. Racing Team, the U.C. Physical Education Department's sailing classes, and the Cal Sailing Club split into three separate organizations, each using their own equipment and located miles apart. This split was due largely to the rigorous environmental conditions that prevail on San Francisco Bay. The Bay is famous for its strong sailing breezes - but these conditions, along with cold water, steep waves, and dense fog, place unusually stringent requirements on both instructional standards and on boat maintenance procedures. Friction inevitably developed between the Racing Team, which needed their boats in top competitive condition, the U.C. Sailing Classes, which consistently damaged boats during instruction but had insufficient resources to maintain them, and the U.C. Yacht CLub, as it was then called, which had volunteers to maintain the fleet but was primarily interested in recreational sailing.

110. RPI SAILING CLUB FAQ
SECTION THREE recreational sailing the summer the lake can get quite busy, but in the early Spring and Fall, when we are sailing, it is pretty quiet.
http://sailing.union.rpi.edu/oldsite/section3.html
SECTION THREE - RECREATIONAL SAILING
3.01 Where does the club sail?
The club keeps its boats on Saratoga Lake, which is about 30 minutes north of Troy.
3.02 What type of boats does the club sail?
The club owns 7 420's and 5 Force 5's. The 420 is a racing boat that is meant for 2 people. It is about 14 feet long and has a mainsail and jib. The Force 5 is a 14 foot one person boat with only a mainsail.
3.03 What do I need to sail?
Since equipment is limited, members are encouraged to bring their own lifejackets, gloves, wetsuits, etc. The club does own some of these items which are available to paid members. Boats, sails, hardware and such are owned and available through the club to paid members.
3.04 How do I get to Saratoga?
There is no public transportation, or school transportation, to Saratoga Lake from RPI. On weekends there is usually a carpool system to get people up to the lake. During the week it is usually up to the member to find a means of getting there. Members with cars are encouraged to bring others with them, and notify other members when they are going up.
3.05 When are we allowed to sail?
