Hostellers Sailing Club
All about Dinghy Cruising
There is quite a lot about dinghy cruising in this website. I think this is excusable since this activity has become one of the main activities of the HSC. I notice that a large proportion of our active sailing membership are also members of the Dinghy Cruising Association. Contents (for this page only)

What is dinghy cruising?
By 'dinghy cruising' we mean the use of a sailing dinghy for recreational travel over relatively long distances, generally with overnight stops. Most dinghy sailors use their boats for racing, or just for pottering, which usually means sailing for an hour or two in one patch of water. Few dinghy sailors seem to be aware that their boats are potentially capable of covering greater distances and carrying all the equipment that will be needed for overnight stops. I suppose that if you want a definition of dinghy cruising then you need to supplement it with a definition of a dinghy. In this context we take a dinghy to be a small (say less than about 20 foot (6.1m) length), open (i.e. no permanent cabin) sailing boat which does not have heavy stabilising ballast. However, we don't need to apply these conditions too rigorously, there are some boats which most people would think of as dinghies but which do have some ballast and there are some which have a tiny cabin but which are otherwise dinghy like in style. The HSC Wayfarers are certainly dinghies in all respects. There are also people cruising with what are basically rowing boats, perhaps with a small sail to provide relaxation on downwind legs only, this can reasonably be included as a form of dinghy cruising.

Welcome to the St Mary's Loch Sailing Club Website. St Mary's Loch is situated in the Scottish Borders, on the A708 about 72km south of Edinburgh. It is a beautiful loch, three miles long by half a mile wide, set in spectacular surroundings in the middle of the Southern Uplands. To preserve the peace and tranquility, only sailing craft may use the Loch. Apart from a few small fishing craft and the club rescue boats, no motor powered craft are allowed. The Sailing Club is set in several acres of land bounded by a drystane dyke, next to the well-known Tibbie Shiels Inn. There is a spacious clubhouse providing a fully equipped kitchen, male and female changing rooms and showers as well as spacious areas for seating and activities. An extensive boat park provides plenty of tie-down berths for members' craft and there are 14 caravan pitches allocated annually to active club members. Open from April to October, the club is very active with a wide range of sailing and social events. There is organised racing for Enterprise and RS200 classes on Sundays and on summer Wednesday evenings. On some specific Sundays there is also racing for Mirrors and Toppers. Many other classes enjoy recreational sailing throughout the season. The club is very family orientated, with young children and teenagers welcomed and actively encouraged to participate. As well as series racing there are also bigger cup-winning events spread throughout the year, such as the Commodore's Cup (for Enterprises and Mirrors) and the Commodore's Cup for Juniors under 16 (sailed in Mirrors and Toppers). During August the Club holds its Annual Regatta where Enterprises, RS200s and Mirrors come from different clubs to race. We have had over sixty boats on the loch racing!

He is in fact an excellent all-rounder; he has surpassing arête. "Arête implies a respect for the wholeness or oneness of life, and a consequent dislike of specialization. It implies a contempt for efficiencyor rather a much higher idea of efficiency which exits not in one department of life but in life itself." Robert M. Recreational boats can go down quickly - September 07, 2004
Recreational boats can go down quickly By Senior Chief Tom Rau, Coast Guard Group Grand Haven, Mi Coast Guard Auxilarist, Jim Bradley, captain of the 50-foot tug Wilhelm Baum, homeport South Haven, once told me: ‘Boats are brought into this world for one reason- to find their way to the bottom.” Bradley spent many years as a professional diver in the marine environment, lending weight to his aphorism. He also pointed out how quickly boats go down especially recreational boats. Unless a person has experienced, first hand a sudden sinking, I suspect their conception of a doomed boat mirrors movies like Titanic where in it took the 46,000-ton behemoth nearly two hours to sink and in the movie it seemed even longer as human drama upstaged the sinking.
