Athens stages Olympic rehearsal
Lasers put to the test near Athens ATHENS, Greece Sailors contended with light and shifting winds at the Athens pre-Olympic test regatta at the Agios Kosmas sailing centre south of the Greek capital. The official Pre-Olympic regatta will not be held until August 2003, but the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and the Greek organisers decided to stage a practice regatta this year. Scheduled for the same week as the 2004 Games themselves in the Saronic Gulf, the test regatta is designed as a dress rehearsal so that competitors and race officials can get a true test of the onshore logistics and on the water conditions. The Greek organising committee (ATHOC) has been under considerable pressure from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to get the infrastructure and stadium building projects underway. YOUR SAY E-mail us with your views on the world of sailing Planning difficulties as well as a downturn in the sponsorship forecasts mean many of the projects have been reduced in scale.

WELCOME TO Odyssail Regatta 2004. Odyssail ended on the 12th of August 2004 with the final prize giving ceremony in Nafplio.
The regatta that lasted for more than a month and involved more than 27 ports in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea came to an end.
Odyssail mission was achieved, as Odyssailors lived their Odyssey with precious experiences from various cultures, memories with new friends, sailing thrills, pleasant, but also not so pleasant incidents. Soon, this site will host pictures and memories of hundreds of sailors that joined us in Odyssail and will also serve as a mean to communicate with other Odyssailors. The organizing committee thanks everyone who helped in making this “dream regatta” a reality. Let’s do it again!

Olympic fans, ask yourself this: why did you enjoy watching Tatiana Grigorieva vault with the pole? No, besides that. Could it be the same reason you enjoyed watching Jai Taurima in the long jump? Michelle Ferris in the cycling? The little-known Justin Norris in the swimming pool? Perhaps it could. The real reason (okay, the other reason) you loved watching Grigorieva in the pole vault is that she jumped a personal best. Put aside her obvious beauty (and the way she silenced 110,000 sports fans by placing a manicured finger to bee-stung lips). Put aside the silver medal (and the email called The Silver Medallist that is doing the rounds). What, really, is the sporting point? It is that Grigorieva did better than she had ever done before. Sure, American Stacy Dragila went higher and broke a world record. Bully for her. Grigorieva was also making history. Her own history. She jumped 4.55 metres and stunned herself.

Brazilian Grael makes sailing history
Last Updated: Friday, August 27, 2004. 2:15am (AEST) Brazilian Torben Grael has made history by becoming the first man to win five Olympic medals in sailing. Grael, 44, and team-mate Marcelo Ferreira, 38, captured gold in the Star class with a race to spare in Athens, embracing and punching the air as they crossed the finish line. A fourth place in race 10 gave them an unassailable lead with the silver and bronze medals to be decided on Saturday, the final day of the Olympic regatta. The battle should be fought out by France's Xavier Rohart and Pascal Rambeau, lying second, and Canada's Ross MacDonald and Mike Wolfs, close behind in third. The Australian pair of Colin Beashel and David Giles were in 12th position after the 10 races. Grael and Ferreira were also Olympic champions in 1996 and bronze medallists in Sydney, when they led going into the final race but were disqualified for a false start, scuppering their hopes of successive golds. Six-time Olympian Grael, nicknamed "Turbine", also won silver in the Soling class in 1984 and bronze in the Star in 1988 with Nelson Falcao.

Archaeologists believe the ancient Olympic Games began more than 4,000 years ago in Olympia, a valley in Greece. Recorded history of the Games dates back to 776 B.C., when the five days of sporting events were primarily religious ceremonies. For the first known 13 Games, the competition consisted of single foot race of 200 yards, which was the approximate length of the Olympic stadium. The Games expanded to include additional contests and reached their height by fifth century BC. Men competed, in the nude, in running, wrestling, pentathlon, horse riding and chariot races. Why in the nude … well, to keep the ladies out of the action. Women were barred from watching or competing, and were even put to death if they were caught at the early Games. Today, not only are women allowed to watch and compete, they are encouraged to do so. Check out a few of our historical Olympic pages here at usolympicteam.com.

Chinese sailors may still lack experiences but they are no longer the newcomers in the Olympics Games and are determined to make China a powerhouse in sailing, said a Chinese sailing official here on Wednesday.
China made an impressive improvement in sailing in the Busan Asian Games by grabbing six out of fifteen gold medals, together with four silvers and one bronze.
Yao Xinpei, the leader of Chinese sailing teams, said, "Our sailors have gained a lot of experiences these past three years. After the success in the Asiad, our aim will be an Olympic gold medal."
Chinese sailors have taken part in five Olympic Games since 1984 but never won a gold medal. The best result for Chinese sailors was a silver medal in Barcelona in 1992.
Yao said that the young Chinese team, which has an average age of 24, was aiming at making history in Athens Olympics in 2004.
