SAILING REPORT Back to NEWS Back to SAILING NEWS Saturday, September 16 BRITONS SAIL AWAY A SILVER BORN OUT OF TRAGEDY Silver lining: Mark Covell and Ian Walker of Great Britain celebrate at the Opera House after receiving their medals for the men's open Star sailing on Sydney Habour OUTSIDE the harbour, in the big ocean swells off Sydney Heads, the final race in the Star class brought a dramatic reversal of fortunes for the pre-Olympic favourites and a silver medal for British crew Ian Walker and Mark Covell. Going into the final race in second place, Brazil in front of them in the points table and America behind, the pair had to decide whether to be bold or protective in terms of their medal chances. "We had to choose between covering the American, who was behind us at the start, or chasing the Brazilian who seemed to have a good break off the line just ahead off us and going for the gold," said Walker, a silver medallist at Atlanta in the 470-class dinghy. "We decided to go for it and chase him but unfortunately the wind went right in a big way and lifted the American past us. We chased him for most of the race and ground it down to within about 30sec but never caught him." Once back ashore the British crew learned that Brazil had been disqualified due to a pre-start rules infringement and they had been chasing a boat that couldn't win. The gold medal went to America with Britain second.

Picture: Mike Hewitt BRITAIN'S sailors felt the warm breeze of glory as they added two more medals to an already staggering total. Iain Percy's gold in the single-handed Finn class, plus a silver for Ian Walker and Mark Covell in the Star keelboat, rounded off an almost perfect Olympic regatta. One accolade said it all. When the British team entered the final press conference at the Rushcutter's Bay marina, hundreds of fellow competitors and journalists spontaneously rose and applauded a group which has dominated the sparkling waters of Sydney Harbour. For Percy, sailing at his first Olympics and just 24, it was a moment that allowed him to uncork the anxieties he had been concealing all week. He went into the final day's races with a 20-point cushion over nearest rival Frederik Loof of Sweden. "It looked simple on paper but it certainly didn't feel it," admitted Percy, wreathed in smiles and dripping wet after being thrown off the dock by jubilant teammates. "I was very nervous before the first race." Those close to the sailor say he did a terrific job from last weekend onwards, hiding from his rivals how stressed he was at leading almost from the first race. Certainly, in media interviews the normally voluble economics graduate was virtually monosyllabic, his face resembling an Easter Island statue.

Coming in second for the silver was John LOVELL and Charlie OGLETREE (USA), with Santiago LANGE and Carlos ESPINOLA (ARG) the bronze. In the Keelboat Men event in the Star, the gold medal had already been won with a race to spare on Thursday 26, so the battle today was for the silver and bronze. A superb performance saw the Canadian pair of ROSS MACDONALD and Mike WOLFS win the Silver medal, with the French crew of Xavier ROHART and Pascal RAMBEAU winning bronze. The Olympic Sailing Competition was a spectacular affair with 400 sailors representing 61 nations competing on the waters of the Saronic, Athens, Greece. 126 races were held for 11 sailing events over 15 days of racing, with 54 athletes receiving medals. A superb effort from Great Britain saw them comfortably at the top of the medal table for the second consecutive Olympiad, with two Gold, one Silver and two Bronze medals, followed by Brazil with two Gold medals. The awards were made during the annual International Sailing Federation (ISAF) conference in Cyprus on Tuesday in recognition of outstanding sailing achievement from September 2001 to August 2002. On receiving the women's award Bekatorou and Tsoulfa said: "For us, being voted as the winners is not only a great honour for us, since Emilia and I represent a country that has a great history in sailing, but it is also a great motive and incentive towards the 2004 Athens Olympic Regatta.'" The Greek female team was nominated in recognition of their domination of the 470 class, the Olympic women's double-handed dinghy. Their opening season win at the SPA Regatta in Holland set the standard, and was followed by wins at virtually every ISAF Grade 1 and Grade 2 event they have entered in the past 12 months.
