Review: History made with Israel triumph

ATHENS, Aug 30 (Reuters) The modern steel-structured amphitheatre built to host the awards ceremonies at the Agios Kosmas sailing centre was a fitting and poignant witness to Olympic history. Windsurfer Gal Fridman's success in the Mistral gripped a nation as Israel, 52 years after sending their first delegation to a Games, finally celebrated an Olympic gold. Fridman closed his eyes and smiled as Israel's blue and white flag was pulled up the Olympic flagpole and the national anthem, Hatikvah (The Hope), reverberated out on to the Saronic Gulf. "It's a dream come true, its unbelievable that I've become the first Israeli to win a gold medal," said Fridman. "I felt like the whole country (Israel) was watching me and pushing me from behind." Fridman's triumph put the gloss on the two-week long regatta. Britain, as in Sydney four years ago, ruled the waves topping the medal standings with two golds, a silver and two bronze medals. Englishman Ben Ainslie proved again that he is the world's leading single-handed dinghy sailor by winning his second successive gold.

Traditionally, Great Britain has always done well at sailing Sailing aficionados will be hoping the event enjoys greater success than the last time the Olympics graced Greece.
At the Athens Games in 1896 the event had to be cancelled due to the weather and its debut was put back to 1900. It has been ever-present since, although it has undergone dramatic changes in the types of boat used. Regattas have been taking place since the mid-17th century, but the first Games, dominated by Great Britain, had classes measured by tonnage. Today there are 11 sailing disciplines in nine boat classes, none of which survive from that first Olympic outing. PRESENT CLASS DEBUTS Windsurfer
Single-handed dinghy

Finn (men) - 1952
Europe (women) - 1992
Laser (open) - 1996 Double-handed dinghy

Fridman came from behind to win a thrilling competition Israeli windsurfer Gal Fridman has made Olympic history by winning his country's first gold medal.
He came second in the final race to win a thrilling men's Mistral competition. "To see our flag and hear our national anthem played at the awards ceremony is a moment we have long been waiting for," said team manager Gilad Lustig. In the 12 Olympics since the establishment of Israel, the country's athletes have only won one silver and three bronze medals. Its Olympic history has been overshadowed by the deaths of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches who were seized by Palestinian militants during the 1972 Games in Munich. "I simply felt a whole country standing behind me, pushing me. I never felt such a thing," Fridman said on Israeli Army Radio.
