Day Camps Foster Farm Safety Awareness Among Children
Tuesday, 27 July 04 Safety camps are an important vehicle for fostering awareness among children in farm safety, an international farm safety conference has been told. Professor Debbie Reed From the Centre for Agricultural Health and Injury Prevention at the University of Kentucky told the Teagasc- run conference in Dublin that children in the US who attended a one day camp were much more aware of the safety risks in farming. The study, which assessed the impact of day camps over a three-year period, also found that children who did not live on a farm gained more safety knowledge than farm-resident children. Professor Reed also reported on a study of rural adolescents in Kentucky. The majority of those in the study engaged in risky behaviour, with 80% operating quad bikes and almost 60% using a gun for hunting. The study also found that 35% of the rural adolescents displayed depressive symptoms, highlighting the need for programmes to improve mental well-being and safety. Dr Dermot Ruane of the UCD Faculty of Agriculture said a recent Teagasc/UCD survey among Irish farmers showed that farm operators who have suffered a farm accident have 15% less income and are two and a half times less likely to have off-farm employment. On the 4% of farms where the farm accident resulted in a major impact on the farm business, the survey found that farm income levels had dropped by one-third.

FARM SAFETY
Livestock Housing
The barn, corral, farrowing house, brooder. . . familiar places we see every day if we're in the livestock business. But such familiarity may cause us to overlook the hazards of these places . . . forget they exist. Now is the time to act against the danger spots around livestock facilities:
Make good housekeeping a top priority. Get rid of trash and junk from inside and around buildings. Clean alleyways, pens and corrals. Eliminate tripping hazards. Warn others of those that can't be eliminated by painting with a bright color. When handling moldy hay or feed, use a nuisance dust respirator to guard against "farmers lung". Maintain ample ventilation in confinement buildings. Ammonia and other gases can irritate your lungs and those of your animals. When agitating or pumping liquid manure from under-floor pits, provide extra ventilation because of the high amounts of gas likely to be released. Get workers and livestock out of buildings if possible. Never enter a manure pit or any tank that has held decaying organic material without an air-supplying respirator. Also, use a life-line and have enough help standing by to lift you out should a problem develop.

Farm Machinery and Your Safety Attitude Farm injuries usually occur because someone did not take the time to think about safety. Are you sometimes in too much of a hurry to get the job done to think about safety? Have you avoided spending the time and money on proper maintenance for your farm equipment? If so, take the time now to reflect on the kind of injury that can happen in an instant when one fails to take the proper safety precautions. Because farm machinery is designed to be powerful, the kinds of injuries that occur are usually very serious, if not fatal. A PTO, for example, used in the right way can safely power your augers, mowers, choppers, and other machinery. But if you are not religiously careful around them, a PTO can rip off your arm, crush your skull, or sever your spine. Be proactive with safety. Anticipate future problems. Protect yourself and other workers around farm machinery by taking the time to review the dangers particular to different kinds of farm machinery and how to work safely around them. Augers, rotary mowers, sickle bars, and the cutter heads of forage harvesters have

Farm Safety
Managing safety in Australian grain production
RESEARCH HAS shown that agricultural producers and their employees are among the highest risk categories for occupational injury and illness in Australia.
Evidence presented by the National Farm Injury Data Centre shows that non-intentional injury on Australian farms is the primary cause of over 150 deaths, 6,500 hospital admissions and close to 6,000 workers compensation claims every year.
Farmsafe Australia's Managing Farm Safety course has identified poor occupational health and safety management in the grains industry as adding major cost to the production process. Grain producers are paying for the cost of occupational injury and illness through:
  • delays in getting farm work done where the farmer or worker is affected payment for medical treatment wages for replacement workers high workers compensation premiums for the industry high accident/disability insurance premiums for the industry payment for rehabilitation services, e.g. physiotherapy.

Improving Safety of Older Farm Equipment Heart of Study

Will it surprise anyone who has ever spent quality time with a grain auger to find out that once the guard is taken off, it tends to stay off?
For James Wassermann and his colleagues at the Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute (PAMI), the real question was: is there a way to remove the need for the guard to be taken off at all?
