A study conducted in 1992 by Rutgers University, for the U. S . Farm ers Home Administration, reveals that during peak labor demand, the number of agricultural workers employed on 5, 943 New Jersey commercial farms exceed s forty thousand (40,604). Among them, appro ximately 16,500, or 40%, are m igrant workers, with the rema in ing 60% comprised of day haul, sea sonal workers from the local area, and full or part- time labor . T he sta te is also characterized by a significant agricultural service industry, incl uding ornamentals, turf, and landscape mainte nance. Many traditional farms in the state produce corn, soybeans, and others field crops (over 10% of total agricultural sales). Horses account for another 14 % of the agricultural cash receipts. In addition to an informative brochure, farm Alarm consists of a theaterbased workshop that explores various stressors that have an impact on the safety, health and quality of life of farm families throughout the Midwest.

The players portray farmer's lives with the many things that often lead to a large buildup of stress. (Photograph by Ron Van Zee) Partners for Farm Health and Safety developed a resource entitled Farm Alarm: Coping with Stress . In addition to an informative brochure (available in our publications section), Farm Alarm consists of a theater-based workshop (performed by Theatre at Work ) that explores various stressors that have an impact on the safety, health and quality of life of farm families throughout the Midwest. Several studies show a direct connection between a person's level of stress and their potential for an on-the-job injury. Stress is linked with numerous illnesses and diseases such as heart disease, ulcers, hypertension, and infection. With farming ranking as one of the nation's most deadly industries, we believe that many farm safety and health decisions are directly influenced by the high stress level in agriculture. To reduce injuries and occupational illness among farm families, we must work to help farmers manage stress. The workshop is made interactive with the audience through the mediator who coordinates the discussion throughout the performance. The script was based largely on interviews with Minnesota farm families during which they talked about the influences of stress in their lives and described how successful families can cope with stress.

As a part of this, a broad cross section of skills are required, skills that in other industries would be done by a variety of skilled trades people such as mechanic, carpenter, problem solver, etc. It also involves work that could be dangerous, such as working with tools, machinery, heavy equipment or chemicals. As a result of this a farmer is subjected to many situations where safety is important. They must be aware of aware of any danger or hazards, and practice safe working procedures. Everyone plays a role in farm safety. Everyone on the farm should participate in managing health and safety issues. A safe farm is an efficient farm. Injuries and accidents cause downtime, are costly and are stressful to all those involved.
Make the Farm a Safe Workplace
The following are some tips with respect to particular aspects of farm safety: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

100. Increasing Our Awareness: Children's Safety On Farms
safety education must be a priority, not only for adults, but for farm children (Reprinted with permission from Ontario s farm safety Association 1995
http://www.cfc-efc.ca/docs/cccf/00000101.htm
Increasing Our Awareness: Children's Safety on Farms L ife on the farm conjures up romantic images of wide open spaces, big blue skies, and glorious sunrises and sunsets a peaceful life paced by the seasons. Yet farm life is far from idyllic. Farms are workplaces filled with hundreds of potential risks: large, powerful machinery; watering holes; unpredictable animals often weighing more than a 1,000 pounds each; pesticides; fertilizers; and numerous buildings that are not child-safe. Safety education must be a priority, not only for adults, but for farm children so that they can learn life-long safety habits. Many of these children are our future farmers. Between 1983 and 1993, there was an average of more than two deaths every week on Canadian farms. Every year more farmers have disabling injuries than do miners or construction workers (Canadian Federation of Agriculture, et al., 1995). Fifty-five children have died from farm-related injuries over the past 10 years in Ontario alone. Sixty per cent of these fatalities were children under five years of age (Ontario's Farm Safety Association 1995, p. 1). While Canadian statistics are unavailable, in the United States more than 300 children are killed each year and 25,000 require medical care due to farm-related injuries (Rivara in Pickett et al., p. 3). The Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting and Prevention Program (CHIRPP) collects and analyzes injuries treated in emergency hospitals in 10 pediatric and five general hospitals in Canada. These are primarily urban hospitals that will likely treat only the more serious farm-related injuries while many others are cared for in their rural hospitals' emergency departments and not reported to CHIRPP. Yet, as of June 1994, CHIRPPs database search selected 438 reported farm-related injuries for individuals under 20 years of age. The data showed that:
