Holiness in Time, Not Only in Space
We are often blind to the dimension that lacks physical substance, and that can lead to enslavement to things.
By Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel
In this excerpt from his classic book on the Sabbath, Professor Heschel argues that Judaism shows a bias for the dimension of time over space as the realm in which we seek to imbue our lives with holiness. His point is arguable, but his influence is felt in the writings of many Jewish thinkers of the late twentieth century and beyond. Reprinted with permission from The Sabbath: Its Meaning for Modern Man , published by Noonday Press. We are all infatuated with the splendor of space, with the grandeur of things of space. “Thing” is a category that lies heavy on our minds, tyrannizing all our thoughts. Our imagination tends to mold all concepts in its image. In our daily lives we attend primarily to that which the senses are spelling out for us: to what the eyes perceive, to what the fingers touch. Reality to us is thinghood, consisting of substances that occupy space; even God is conceived by most of us as a thing. The result of our thinginess is our blindness to all reality that fails to identify itself as a thing, as a matter of fact. This is obvious in our understanding of time, which, being thingless and insubstantial, appears to us as if it had no reality.

Humanity, Gurdjieff realized, had entered a precarious new period in its evolution. The world would be destroyed, Gurdjieff warned, unless the 'wisdom' of the East and the 'energy' of the West were harnessed and used harmoniously. To effect this Harnelmiatznel , Gurdjieff gave the necessary shock: he introduced to the West a unique and powerful esoteric teaching of self-transformation. Gurdjieff called it The Fourth Way
An original teaching , The Fourth Way is neither a mixture of spiritual lines nor a modern eclectic concoction. It is, as Gurdjieff declared, "completely self-supporting and

Altar Protector
A cover made of cloth, baize or velvet which is placed on the table of the altar, during the time in which the sacred functions do not take place. Its purpose is to prevent the altar-cloth from being stained or soiled. It should be a little wider than the table and some what longer than the latter, so that it may hang down several inches on each side and in front. It may be of any colour (green or red would seem to be the preferred colours), and its front and side edges are usually scalloped, embroidered, or ornamented with fringes. During the divine services it is removed (Cong. Sac. Rit., 2 June, 1883), except at Vespers, when, during the incensing of the altar at the Magnificat, only the front part of the table need be uncovered, and it is then simply turned back on the table of the altar. It is called the vesperale , the stragulum or altar-cover. It need not be blessed. A.J. SCHULTE

What happened to Bogey after walking down the runway? A new book tells the story A sequel to the perfect ending
'As Time Goes By' treads on sacred celluloid memories
Web posted on: Monday, October 12, 1998 3:57:34 PMEDT ATLANTA (CNN) It seems some folks would rather hear Sam play the same old tune over and over, rather than strike up any new tunes. Sam, in this case, is the piano player in the classic film, "Casablanca," starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. The film tells the World War II tale of lovers torn apart by war, and the sacrifice they make for the sake of humanity. Sam is also a character in a new novel yes, new that details what became of the "Casablanca" crew after that famous fog-shrouded scene that ended the 1942 film. Did Rick (Humphrey Bogart) find happiness without Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman)? Or did he crawl back to her, begging forgiveness for making her go on that plane with Victor (Paul Henreid)?

The Mysteries of Sacred Time
by
Time in its compressed form at the involutionary threshold is Being, crossing that threshold, a connection is made with the Spatial dimension and that compressed Time energy begins to evolve linearly as the Becoming. Once that event horizon is crossed, Time extends itself in accordance with an involved geometric structure and the great cycle of creation begins. All material forms are simply varied arrangements of this structure simultaneously expressing itself as the four elements, Fire, Earth, Air and Water, in each of the three energy modes, Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable. These elemental principles lie at the core of the material creation and their twelve archetypal divisions are known in every culture as the Zodiac. They form the very structure of the creation and represent the central theme underlying all astrological knowledge. The enlightened seer who has reached this threshold within his own being through an inward yogic penetration enjoys a unique temporal perception. He experiences the unfolding of time as a circular movement reflecting the image of an unmoving eternal harmony. Somewhat in the manner of Mandelbrot’s fractal sets, Time extends itself in a series of non-linear cycles repeating themselves in different octaves of experience like circles within circles. There is repetition in the wider movement but at the same time there is an imprinting of experience which evolve progressively higher systems of order. For the ancient mystics, a glimpse into the core of time would have been an awesome and almost inexpressible spiritual experience. Without a mystical vocabulary, they would have described what they ‘saw’ in profoundly mythic and archetypal terms. One of the better known biblical accounts of this time vision may be found in the first chapter of the book of the Prophet Ezekiel. Unfortunately, these passages have been widely misinterpreted owing to a lack of understanding of the temporal reality.

My husband and I were introduced to A Sacred Primer through a retreat given by Elizabeth Harper Neeld at the Cenacle in Houston Texas. The book comes alive in a very special way when this grounded, gracefilled woman shares her personal experiences of her spiritual practice as well as the experiences of historical and contemporary believers in The Divine. My husband and I are following the example of another couple who are reading the book together in an "allowable" mode. We expect to be surprised as together we read, reflect, and receive. We look forward with anticipation to other works (and retreats)from this gifted scholar. A Sacred Primer was a joy to read, May 4, 1999

Sacred Geography in Northwestern North America
by DEWARD E. WALKER Introduction Although the concept of the "sacred" is employed widely in recent discussions of geography, no satisfactory definition of this fundamental idea has been offered. Until agreement is reached on a definition of the sacred, effective enforcement of the foregoing laws will be difficult. Likewise, enforcement will also be difficult until agreement is reached on the broad range of different types of sacred geography. This paper offers a definition of the sacred and a taxonomy of sacred geography as contribution toward resolution of these problems. Basic ethnographic research concerning Native American concepts of sacred geography is sparse. The recent collection of papers edited by Christopher Vecsey (1991), stemmed from this absence of research but must be regarded as only a beginning. Research on this topic is about Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Meso-America, e.g., Townsend (1982) and Vogt (1965, 1969), but with few exception, e.g., Harrington's 1908 The Ethnogeography of the Tewa Indians (Harrington 1908), is a subject largely undeveloped for most regions in North American North of Mexico. In addition to being vital to ritual practice, sacred geography in Northwestern North American is a source of religious meaning group identity and group cohesion. Sacred sites in Northwestern North America are invested through ritual with complex layers of religious meaning. Tribal religions in Native America differ from most other world religions in their conceptions of sacred geography. In the following, I shall attempt to account for their distinctive features, focusing especially on the concept of the sacred and on a tentative taxonomy of types of sacred geography typically encountered in Native American religions of Northwestern North America. Field data for this study is drawn from ethnographic research among Salishan, Shaptian, Ute-Aztecan,, Western Algonkian, and Lakota groups.
