Artist Lynne Feldman
Lynne Feldman, whose works appear with this article, was already 20 years into her career as a painter when she began to explore Judaic themes in her work.
What began as an expression of emotion in response to her grandparents’ deaths has become a passion to convey the warmth and deep sense of connection she experiences in Judaism. One of Feldman’s specialties is creating portraits of families such as those seen here. Each portrait is the result of collaboration between the artist and the family. In Grand Rapids, Michigan a woman sits in her favorite chair, casually eating from a bowl of fresh strawberries. The computer screen reveals that a hurricane is taking shape half a world away. The woman eats another strawberry and attempts to finish the report that is due tomorrow morning. When she hears her cell phone’s familiar jingle, she tenses. It’s work calling again. One last strawberry, then she’ll deal with the crisis at hand. What’s wrong with this picture? You may reply with the obvious...the hurricane, the work crisis, and the last minute report.

Sacred Time and Luke
Southeastern Pennsylvania and Northern Delaware were without Internet connection on January 12, 2005 during business hours. I suppose we will soon read what the economic cost of this downtime was. The expression “time is money” is a statement about the values of our society. Was there any notion of time in the first century or any means of measurement of that time? Two groups of people did in fact measure time: astronomers and priests. “Ancient priests kept track of it as a way of serving God. For them time was sacred.” [i]
After the prologue, Luke states: “In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a certain priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah . . .”

The Sacred Place, the Sacred Time and the Sacred Human Being By Father Raed Abusahlia
May 2002
The refuge of a large number of civilian citizens, among whom a few armed men, to the Church of the Nativity during the incursion of the city (by the Israel Defence Forces) stirred an international outcry that triggered a number of questions about the fact of seeking refuge in a place of worship for protection. I do not wish to trail, here, behind news reports, whose only aim is to highlight the thrilling, and the unusual with a view to draw universal attention. The question is much more important and deeper than we anticipate, therefore, I shall try to embark on the discussion of an idea that has long turned up over and over again in my mind. It is that of the “sacred place”, while leaving the concept of the “sacred time” aside, as I hope to lay a firm foundation for the idea of the “sacred human being.” In the Holy Bible we also find this concept in some texts that spoke about places of refuge for killers who did not commit a premeditated murder or the innocent who are accused, as they all could get there for protection so that their lives are spared and they avoid harm. In Deuteronomy, God said to the people “Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land…. And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live; Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly…” God approved this law so “That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, … and so blood be upon thee.” These were the cities of refuge (Review chapter 19:2-10).

Eliade: Chapter 2. Sacred Time and Myths
PROFANE DURATION AND SACRED TIME
“For religious man time too, like space, is neither homogeneous nor continuous” (68).  Sacred time is characterized as follows: Recoverable because “by its very nature sacred time is reversible in the sense that…it is a primordial mythical time made present” (68). That is, it is the time of the original creation ( ab origine ), the time of the acts or deeds ( gesta ) of the gods. It is a time before history, before the beginning of the human story. Therefore, it is sacred, evoking awe, and is referred to as in illo tempore (“in that time”). Cyclical, reversible. Sacred time is eternal; therefore, it never passes away. Rather, it is “made present” on a renewable schedule, usually based on the seasonal cycle and realized through ritual re-enactment: “…sacred time appears under the paradoxical aspect of a circular time, reversible and recoverable, a sort of eternal mythical present that is periodically reintegrated by means of rites” (70). Discontinuous from ordinary time. Compare the different experiences of time in playing, working, dreaming, pain or pleasure. Non-religious people experience different intensities of time, but they “always represent a human experience, in which there is no room for any divine presence” (71). Profane time, then, is interrupted in the religious experience of sacred time.

Seeing Grief As A Sacred Space part 1
by Laura Scott, Psychic, Spiritual Teacher and Channel for Healing

One of my beloved friends is getting ready to leave his body, and transition to The Other Side. It is a sacred time that permeates the rest of 'daily life ', and creates a natural space for reflection and sharing. You see, folks often forget that no psychic or medium is exempt from the challenges of living life. We don't get a 'pass' card when it comes to dealing with the tough stuff. Just like your car mechanic can still have car trouble, your plumber can have bad pipes in their house, or for that matter, your Doctor—who is neither exempt, nor excused, from any of life's illnesses or dis-eases. Like all of you, that means when someone I love prepares to leave the earth plane, I grieve.
Knowing that life exists after death and being able to communicate with those on The Other Side is a wonderful gift! But in no way does it exempt me from dealing with the natural stages of earthly grief, be it the emotional toll, the physical loss, or just coping with the understanding that it takes time for Life, in It's Infinite Wisdom, to reorganize the vibrational shift so that the loss of a loved one is not so acutely sharp. It takes time to adjust to the communication shift, and for the physical loss to heal. And even for the 'enlightened,' there are 'growing pains.'

Havdalah
In Judaism , the concept of making distinctions and separations permeates many facets of religious life. We distinguish between holy time and mundane, or ordinary, time. We declare certain books to be holy and distinguish them in the way we study and treat them, from books which are mundane. We treat holy spaces with particular reverence. The Torah teaches that God created the world by making distinctions, first between light and darkness, next between water and empty space, finally between earth and water. We, too, make distinctions in our lives, and primary among them is the distinction between sacred time and ordinary time. To mark the beginning of sacred time, we light two candles and recite a berakhah (blessing) which praises God who commanded us to kindle the lights in celebration of the occasion. We mark the end of that sacred time period with a ceremony called Havdalah, which means "separation." It, too, begins with light, as we kindle a braided candle. The most common time to perform the ceremony of Havdalah is weekly at the end of Shabbat when three stars appear in the sky. Havdalah is also performed at the end of other festivals and holy days.

Reflections on ‘Sacred Time, Holy Ground’ By Carla Valentine PrynE A lot has changed in the church since the mid-80s, the time when I started to care deeply about the church’s voice, or lack thereof, in matters ecological. It used to be that there was mighty little to read that was written by Christian theologians or thinkers if you wanted to mine the Christian tradition for its rich wisdom and insight on the environmental crisis. Now I can’t afford to purchase all the books out there – in theology, spirituality, ecofeminism, earth ethics, ecojustice. And it used to be that putting ecology and liturgy in the same sentence sounded, well, a bit curious; and now, a gathering with that as its focus draws musicians, clergy and lay leaders, urban and rural activists, contemplatives and mystics to Holden Village in September for the conference “Sacred Time, Holy Ground.” Worship, ecology, activism, prayer, scripture and the arts: Holden has been making the connections for a very long time. And Holden, long a place of hospitality, wisdom and formation, has been a groundbreaker and innovator especially in the area of worship, and in linking ecological education with theological education, particularly in its summer programs. One longtime Holden guest who was at the conference commented that the village was “a natural place for this – this is part of what Holden’s always been about.”

In today's world, with its relentless emphasis on success and productivity, we have lost the necessary rhythm of life, the balance between work and rest. Constantly striving, we feel exhausted and deprived in the midst of great abundance. We long for time with friends and family, we long for a moment to ourselves.
Millennia ago, the tradition of Sabbath created an oasis of sacred time within a life of unceasing labor. Now, in a book How Then, Shall We Live? :
One of the hazards of a reflective life is to grope for answers before you've asked the right questions. Wayne Muller, a minister, therapist and bestselling author has taken a stab at asking the big questions: Who am I? What do I love? How shall I live, knowing I will die? What is my gift to the family of the Earth? Following each of these questions are some of the most tender and luminous discussions one could hope to ponder. More than a Legacy of the Heart :
Wayne Muller brings us a classic on how to deal with the invariable wounds of childhood.

November 14, 1999 Expectations rate high during the holidays. At risk are balance, boundaries, and bon bons. What are we looking for, really? Do we find it in the mall? Do we find it under a starry sky? Do we find it in moments spent with friends and family? Or maybe in stories, told and retold? Here are the words of UU minister David Cole, from Celebrating Christmas: An Anthology of UU Ministers' Writings on this Holiday Season Antoine De Saint-Exupery wrote in The Little Prince: "It is the time you have wasted on your rose that makes your rose so important." It is especially important at Christmas time to learn to waste time. As I watched shoppers at the Mall on Saturday, I did not see a single happy face. Harried and hurried, everyone seemed preoccupied, irritated, or bored. Christmas can only be joyful if we slow down and waste some time. It is the time you have wasted crafting a scarf, stuffing a toy, writing a note to a close friend, reading, meditating, or thinking that makes Christmas come alive.... Walk, do not run, to the nearest Christmas! Wait and learn patience. Kick at pebbles, watch stars, notice all the quiet unimportant yet essential things that happen around you. These can be your ritual of waiting for Christmas. Christmas can be a renewal of a hope, a miracle of joy, but only if we waste some time making it a spiritually beautiful event. (p. 128)

Ursula Hegi
German-born writer Ursula Hegi often confronts cultural wall jumpers in her internationally acclaimed fiction. "The older I get," she says, "the more I realize that I am inescapably encumbered with the heritage of my country's history." In her new novel, Sacred Time, Hegi symbolically considers the inescapability of history and culture by following one boy's unfortunate mistake as it reverberates through his family. Elegantly reflecting on the dark side of childhood, Sacred Time traces three generations of the boy's Italian-American family from the Bronx in the latter half of the twentieth century. From Tearing the Silence: On Being German in America , Hegi's exploration of the conspiracy of silence surrounding the Holocaust in post-war Germany, to Stones from the River , an epic narrative of the rise of Hitler from the perspective of a small-town, gossipy dwarf, Hegi writes her heritage with grace, humor, and scrupulous honesty. Hegi is the recipient of over thirty grants and awards, including an NEA Fellowship and five PEN Syndicated Fiction Awards.

The Mysterious Force:
"Marriages (at least good ones) are made in heaven. That's the nearly worldwide sentiment about the destiny of relationships, whether you ask the Matyos of Hungary, who believe a 'mysterious force, Love, draws the couple to each other', or hollywood's Alan Rudolph, whose Made in Heaven film characters - one recently dead, the other an unborn virgin soul - meet in heaven and discover they were 'made for each other'. That's the easy part; once incarnate, they have to find each other again against formidable obstacles, mostly psychological. In Rudolph's view the fact that these two pledged their truth before birth guarantees a profoundly satisfying, even blissful, match once they are born as man and woman - providing they can find each other again. As their presiding angelic genius locus tells them, if they don't meet each other by age thirty, they'll each marry someone else and remain unhappy for life. "Folk wisdom of nearly all cultures has perennially acknowledged that certain
