ESSAY SAMPLE ON "THE CULTURE OF THE HUTU AND TUTSI TRIBES OF RWANDA, AFRICA"
The culture of the Hutu and Tutsi tribes of Rwanda, Africa interests me for many reasons. One reason is that they are so diverse from our American way of life. Another reason is that I have heard a little bit about them in the news and by talking to people. This sparked my interest and made me want to learn more about them. I will cover a wide variety of information in my report. This will include the land where they live, their way of life, their history and ancestry, and what the government is like in Rwanda. I don't expect the reader to become an expert on the Hutus and the Tutsis, but I do hope that the reader gets a general understanding about what is going on in their section of Africa. I have learned lots of new information from doing this report, not only about the Hutus' and the Tutsis' culture, but about the whole continent of Africa.
The first topic that I will cover is about the people that make up the tribes of the Hutu and Tutsi. The total population of the country of Rwanda, where most of their events have taken place is 7,800,000. The population of the Hutus is 3,000,000 and the Tutsis number only 1,000,000. The physical traits of the Hutus and Tutsis are very different from each other. The Hutu have larger noses and larger all around facial features than the Tutsis. Most Tutsis are seldom less than six feet tall, while the Hutu are very short people. The Tutsis are related to the Masai and the people along the Nile, while the Hutus have a Buntu history. As you can see the people that make up the tribes of the Hutus and the Tutsis are a very diverse group of people.

LITERATURE Rwanda's literary history is largely an oral one. The traditional texts were classed in two main categories: more formal, royal documents, which are described as 'official tradition', and the non-formal, popular literature. The distinction between these categories is based on whether or not the literature was controlled officially, rather than denoting any sort of value judgment regarding the content. Royal literature consisted of these major sets of texts:
  • Ubucurabwenge - a royal genealogical list Ibitekerezo - a collection of royal myths Ibisigo - a collection of royal poetry Ubwiru - a set of royal rituals
Popular literature consisted (in part) of the following forms:
  • Imyasiro - hunting poetry Indirimbo z'Ingabo - heroic hymns and army music Imigani - proverbs and sayings Ibyivugo: self-praises and heroic poetry
To this day, storytelling and public speaking are much admired, and good storytellers are respected in society.

25 March 2005 News from Unit K Hotel Rwanda: the power of cinema
BY GEORGINA GODWIN Hotel Rwanda is a disturbing film. With the tag line “When the world closed its eyes, he opened his arms”, the movie tells the true-life story of Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager who housed over a thousand Tutsi refugees during their struggle against the Hutu militia in Rwanda. Ten years ago some of the worst atrocities in the history of mankind took place in Rwanda - and in an era of high-speed communication and round the clock news, the events went almost unnoticed by the rest of the world. In only three months, one million people were murdered. As the movie blurb puts it: “ In the face of these unspeakable actions, inspired by his love for his family, an ordinary man summons extraordinary courage to save the lives of over a thousand helpless refugees, by granting them shelter in the hotel he manages”. You can just imagine that man with the gravely voice who seems to do all the movie voice overs saying it…
Rusesabagina is played by Don Cheadle and his wife, Tatiana, by Sophie Okonedo. She was nominated for an Oscar for her performance. Nick Nolte plays the UN colonel, who despite his position, has no back up and is unable to do much to help.

The Hutus, who comprise the majority of the population, are farmers of Bantu origin. The Tutsis are a pastoral people who arrived in the area in the 15th century. A detailed report from Human Rights Watch in 1999, looked into how the killing campaign was executed, using oral testimony and documentation from a wide variety of sources. It explained how this was planned for a long time and how the international community was aware of what was going on yet ignored it, and were even present during the systematic killings. “At least half a million people perished in the Rwandan genocide,” the report notes. “Perhaps as many as three quarters of the Tutsi population. At the same time, thousands of Hutu were slain because they opposed the killing campaign and the forces directing it.”

The authorities told me to do it." ``I confess and I apologize about the crime I committed," said the next man, also dressed in patched rags. ``I confess, but I also denounce the people who were with me." Then it was Valens Nteziryayo's turn. He stood there - a sad, thin, barefoot figure with a cue-ball haircut - and quietly recalled how he bludgeoned his ethnic Tutsi neighbor in 1994 under orders from local troops. ``The soldiers went to the house of the Tutsi," said Nteziryayo, 35, an ethnic Hutu farmer. ``They asked him to come out. A soldier put a knife to my side. They told me to hit the Tutsi with a hoe. So I did."

Rwanda Plants and Animal Back to Top Forests, once considerable, now are concentrated in the western mountains and Lake Kivu area. Predominant trees are the eucalyptus, acacia, and oil palms. Wildlife—including elephant, hippopotamus, crocodile, wild boar, leopard, antelope, and flying lemur—is protected in Akagera National Park. The Virunga Mountains in northern Rwanda are the home of what is around to be half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. This subspecies of gorilla was made famous by the work of American zoologist Dian Fossey. Rwanda Communications Back to Top

domestic: the capital, Kigali, is connected to the centers of the prefectures by microwave radio relay; the remainder of the network depends on wire and HF radiotelephone
international: international connections employ microwave radio relay to neighboring countries and satellite communications to more distant countries; satellite earth stations - 1 Intelsat (Indian Ocean) in Kigali (includes telex and telefax service).
Rwanda Culture Back to Top Much of Rwanda's orthodox cultural heritage revolved around dances, praise songs, and dynastic poems designed to enhance the legitimacy of the Tutsi kingship. Since freedom in 1962 another set of traditions has emerged, emphasizing a different cultural stream, identified with a Hutu heritage. Regional dances, including the celebrated hoe dance of the north, are given pride of place in the nation's cultural repertoire. orthodox crafts such as basketry, ceramics, and ironworks offer another element of continuity with the past.

    Removing the Culture of Impunity
June 24, 1997 Washington - Rwanda has come a long way since the genocide of '94. but it also has a very long way to go.
Reports vary as to the actual situation, but there is a consensus that security has deteriorated this year. The killing of human rights observers and relief workers has worsened the situation. The two prefectures of Ruhengeri and Gisenyi are reported to be the least secure. According to an InterPress Service report in March '97, it is the hard core militia (many of whom returned during the exodus from Zaire last year) who are causing problems with security. Efforts towards peace and bringing to justice genocide perpetrators are threatened by spiralling terrorism by Hutu extremists moving to eliminate genocide witnesses. According to the UN Human Rights Mission, from January to March 1997 at least 424 people, 40 of them genocide survivors and people associated with them have allegedly been killed in 55 incidents, most of them near the border of Zaire. However, in a recent report on the wave of violence sweeping part of Rwanda, Amnesty International claims that hundreds of civilians have been killed since the massive repatriation of refugees last year and that while Hutu extremists were responsible for some of the killings, most of the blame must be placed on the Rwandan Army (RPA). Other reports support Amnesty's claim.

    RWANDA THE GREAT GENOCIDE DEBATE
Africa Direct Conference: July 27th : London
    2. Debate: Why Did Rwanda Explode?
    Barry Crawford, Africa Direct
I would like to start by making it clear why we are so insistent on having this debate. It is not because we are insensitive to the fact that a huge number of Tutsis died in Rwanda. Neither is it because we have any interest in taking sides or saying who is more to blame - the former government or the RPF.
The crux of our argument is the need to understand the prolonged instability in central Africa since 1990 as part of a process, a process unleashed by Western foreign policy initiated at the end of the Cold War. It is therefore not simply about events which took place in a few months in 1994 in Rwanda.
What happened in Rwanda starkly illustrates what is wrong and dangerous about the West's new emphasis on ethics and morality in foreign policy. If we can get to grips with this, I think the significance of the genocide debate becomes more apparent and more real. I think it is an extraordinary process which has turned what used to be the most vociferous critics of Western intervention into the most prominent advocates of Western intervention today.
Instead of critical analysis we now have moral judgements. Once the verdict of genocide had been passed on events in Rwanda a moral absolute had been established. This meant in fact that the subject became closed to critical analysis. It has become a kind of intellectual 'no go' area. Anyone who dares to trespass into this area becomes exposed to the charge of 'genocide denial' which becomes tantamount to complicity in genocide itself.
