As indicate on the introductory page of this web site, the oral document known as Ubucurabwenge (the forging of intelligence, or mental development), which contains the genealogies of the kings of Rwanda, is the pillar of the whole Rwanda Tradition. The three other major documents - the myths Ibitekerezo, the Ubwiru rituals et the symbolic poetry Ibisigo - all follow the structure and pattern of the royal lists given in Ubucurabwenge. The royal lists were compiled and memorised by a group called Abacurabwenge ("Forgers of Intelligence"). It has been said that the lists were recited during the coronation ceremonies, although the text of the coronation ritual just mentions that the new King and Queen Mother are resented under their new names, without specifying that their full genealogy is recited at that occasion. The list itself is given in reverse order, beginning with the reigning King and Queen Mother, and ending with Muntu (Man, Mankind), the first King of Men, son of Kigwa, son of Nkuba Shyerezo, the King of Heaven. The List spans forty-three (43) reigns, listing the names of the King and Queen Mother, with their ascendancy on the mother and father's side. The Ubucurabwenge lists were recorded and published by Alexis Kagame in his book Inganji Kalinga (Kabgayi, 2nd ed. 1959, Book II, pp. 98-101).

    Introduction
Rwanda is a landlocked country surrounded by Uganda in the north, Tanzania in the east, Burundi in the south, and Zaire to its west and northwest.
Rwanda lies on the East African plateau, with the divide between the water systems of the Nile and Zaire rivers passing in a north-south direction through the western part of the country. To the west of the divide, the land drops sharply to Lake Kivu in the Great African Rift Valley; to the east, the land falls gradually across the central plateau - its grassy highlands are the core areas of settlement of Rwanda's population - to the swamps and lakes on the country's eastern border.
Most of Rwanda is 3,000 ft above sea level, with much of the central plateau being higher than 4,700 ft. In the northwest, on the border with Zaire, are the volcanic Virunga Mountains; the highest peak, Mount Karisimbi (14,870 ft) is snowcapped. Lake Kivu, 4,700 feet above sea level, drains into Lake Tanganyika, through the sharply descending Ruzizi River. The Kagera River, which forms much of Rwanda's eastern border, flows into Lake Victoria.

TRADITIONS OF RWANDA Rwanda became a German colony following the 1885 Berlin Conference, although it would be full decade before a permanent German presence was established there. In 1918, Rwanda was mandated to Belgium, which implemented a system of indirect rule that exploited and intensified the existing divisions between Tutsi and Hutu. Music and dance plays an important role in the traditions of all Rwanda's peoples .The Rwandan people have a variety of music and dance which range from acts that demonstrate epics commemorating excellence and bravery,
humorous lyrics to hunting root. Traditional songs are often accompanied by a solitary lulunga, a harp-like instrument with eight strings. More
celebratory dances are backed by a drum orchestra, which typically comprises seven to nine members, and collectively produce a hypnotic and exciting explosion set of intertwining rhythms.

    SEC Examining Frist Stock Sale
On Saturday, the AP reported that the Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating a stock transaction that Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN) made this summer. MSNBC reports he is also under investigation by the US attorney for the Southern District of New York. In January 2003, Frist is quoted as saying " ... as far as I know, I own no HCA stock." This statement directly contradicts a report from the Nashville Scene which I detailed on Wednesday: The Scene discovered that the trust isn't very blind; the assets were "concentrated in the stock of HCA." Reading tax documents (capital gains filings, for example), the experts were able to deduce what was happening with the trust. Read more...

    Economics of Rwanda
Rwanda is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Consisting of only [10,169] square miles,...smaller than the state of Maryland, Rwanda contains 7.5 million people (1991)...Rwanda, known as the 'Little Switzerland of Africa,' is also one of the world's five poorest countries, with about 95% of the population barely managing to survive on small farm lots called shambas, of about two and one half acres each. Terracing techniques are relied upon to utilize nearly all of the available land for cultivation. However, even with such stringent escarpment devices, the population is living above the carrying capacity of the terrain. Each year another 23,000 families will need new land plots to grow their food and support their livestock. (Fossey, 1983) Rwanda's population density, which is the highest in sub-Saharan Africa, is 332 people per square kilometer (128 people per square mile). Besides the capital of Kigali, few urban centers exist in this countrymost families live in self-contained compounds. Since independence from Belgium, Rwanda's GDP has grown almost 6% per year. This has been offset, however, by the country's rapidly growing population. Consequently, annual per capita income is approximately $200.

    Ethnic Groups in Rwanda
Rwanda has a population of approximately 7 million. The languages spoken in this country are French, Kinyarwanda, and Kiswahili; and the religions practiced are Christian, traditional African, and Muslim. The total population of this country comprises several peoples, the most predominant of which are the three ethnic groups: the Tutsi, the Hutu, and the Twa. Photo: Courtesy of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund The Twa, a subgroup of the African Pygmies, are slightly larger than most pygmies. Adult males average 1.5 m (5 ft) and 45 kg (100 lb). The Twa, the earliest settlers of this area, originally lived off the land as hunters and gatherers in the once extensive forests around the Virunga Mountains. But as the forests were cut downfirst by the Hutu for farming and grazing, then by the Tutsi for grazingthe Twa population began to decrease. Today the Twa make up only 1% of the total population. Compared to the other ethnic groups within Rwandan society, the Twa hold an inferior position, due to their smaller size and their customs, which are considered primitive by the Tutsi and Hutu.
The Hutu are related to the Bantu tribes of Central and East Africa. They are typically larger than the Twaadult males average 1.5 m, 13 cm (5 ft, 5 in.) and 59 kg (130 lb). They also, in general, have dark skin and stocky builds. The Hutu

SABYINYO VOLCANO - Standing next to a mountain gorilla is a phenomenal experience. About 500 pounds of male silverback tilts its huge face toward tourists peering back through giant nettles in awe.
The only sound on the lush mountainside is the crunching of mountain celery as the gorilla feeds, an occasional low-pitched ah-oomph answered in kind by game guards so that both humans and apes know the other is happy just to observe. With only about 650 mountain gorillas left in the world, visiting Rwanda's ape families has long been the jewel in the small country's tourist crown.
