International Driving Licences and Permits
You can legally drive in New Zealand for up to 12 months if you have either a current driver's licence from your home country, or an International Driving Permit (IDP).
Recent law changes mean all drivers, including overseas visitors, must carry their licence or permit when driving.
You will only be able to drive the same types of vehicles you are licensed to drive in your home country.
Make sure your overseas driver's licence is current.
If your licence is not in English, you should bring an English translation with you or obtain an International Driving Permit. Contact your local automobile club for further details about obtaining a translation or an IDP. New Zealand Road Safety If you prefer to drive yourself, please note the following important points: In New Zealand, all motorists drive on the left-hand side of the road

My Tips and Advice: Life on the Road /RV Safety Tip: Taxes If you are earning income while you are on the road there are some special tax issues you need to consider. Some states deem any money you earned while in the state to be taxable by that state. So even though you do not have residency in that state you may be required to file an income tax return. Some states base this on the length of time you are in the state and some by the amount you earn while in that state. Tip: More taxes Check with you accountant about any special tax issues you have regarding income earned while on the road. If you file in error you could be liable for back taxes and interest from when the origianl return was filed. Tip: Keep Track of Assignments If you plan on ´Motor home schooling´ your kids make sure to keep track of what you do. Have them write a daily journal of where they went, things they saw and concepts they learned.

FEATURE GOOD SAM'S VIP RV SAFETY RALLY GIVES A HANDS-ON REVIEW OF THE BASICS The first annual Good Sam VIP RV Safety Rally, held January 28 29 in Palm Springs, California, offered a hands-on educational romp through the do's and don'ts of piloting a recreational vehicle. A group of more than 100 RVers interested in honing their RV safety skills went back to school for some important - and often overlooked - lessons of on-the-road safety. The Good Sam Club and GMAC Insurance, in partnership with General Motors and Affinity Group Inc. (parent company of Trailer Life and MotorHome magazines), organized this enhanced version of a traditional defensive-driving course. The focus was on many of the everyday situations that might be encountered while enjoying the freedom of travel in a recreational vehicle.

Store Flammables, Poisons and Cleaners Safely
Keep flammable items like paint, varnishes, sprays and glues away from all living areas.
Keep the location of antidotes posted where you store poisons and cleaners. Protect your Valuables and Expensive Purchases
Valuable items like gold, silver and jewels should be appraised and the appraisal record should be kept in a safe place. Take a photograph of your valuables and keep a copy of your appraisals in a safe location outside of your home (like a safety deposit box). Keep valuable papers like stocks and bonds, your will, stamp and coin collections and jewellery that you wear infrequently in a safety deposit box. Make sure you add expensive purchases, such as camera equipment, to your insurance. We can help you make sure your new purchase is covered.

Posted Jun 17, 2005, 10:22 AM ET by Big Daddy Another option that I saw on the Travel Channel or another similar program a couple of months ago was the The Dutchmen T@b. Perfect for two people or a small family that can make the kids sleep in a tent. Best of all it they were pulling it with a VW Beetle....meaning most cars out there could pull this. Posted Jun 17, 2005, 10:53 AM ET by Phil L. Sorry, "only" 4200 pounds puts it well beyond the capacity of any current-production minivan, much to my annoyance.
The topic of realistic towing capacity has been beaten to death many places. Suffice it to say that many people buy trailers after only a cursory look at their tow vehicle's manual - and then discover that most published tow capacity figures assume *no* cargo in the vehicle - and at most *one* passenger. Anything else in the tow vehicle comes at the expense of tow capacity.

... Green RVing Guide RV Driving is Different – not Difficult
If you're an experienced car driver, you already have the skills necessary to drive a motorized RV. The automatic transmission, power brakes and steering you're accustomed to are standard features on most RVs. With proper attention to the differences – the vehicle size, height and weight – you'll find it fun and easy to take the wheel of a motorhome.
Whether you drive a motorized RV or tow an RV, you should:
Before leaving:
sit in the driver's seat and adjust all mirrors for optimal road views.
Allow for the size of your vehicle when turning. The front and rear wheels will track paths much farther apart than those of a car.
Allow more time to brake , or to change lanes, and merge onto a busy highway because big vehicles take more time to accelerate and slow down than small ones. Drivers towing a folding camping trailer or travel trailer should:
Match the proper tow vehicle to your RV
. Most full and mid-size family cars can pull a trailer; so can today's popular vans, SUVs, and light-duty trucks. Check maximum weight it can pull.

Well, actually, you have lots to worry about if you haven't done your homework before you become the owner of a recreational vehicle, particularly if you're buying a self-powered model or any used model, self-powered or not. And there are some key questions you should answer before you buy even a glorified tent for two. Whether you are shopping for new or used, big or little, the key to owner satisfaction is getting the most for your money in the areas of safety, quality and reliability. Because there are relatively few safety and construction guidelines in place for RVs, doing your homework is crucially important. Well, you ask, can't the sellers tell me what I need to know? StreetWise RV Guide's goal. Oh, yes, what's the major reason buying an RV smart is harder than buying a car smart? RVs can eat money. This can be true even if you're buying a used, small tow-behind pop-up trailer for $2,000. Why? Repairs on any RV can be substantial. Replacing the axle on that tiny trailer could cost you more than a thousand. In addition to purchase price, consider these other costs:

REAL COLLEGES OF RVING The smartest RVers are those who know they don’t know it all—but they try to do something about it. You’ll find them attending the seminars at rallies, reading books by RV authors, reading RV publications, perusing the RV related web-sites, and asking other RVers about their experiences. Every opportunity they get to increase their knowledge of RVing and thereby increase their enjoyment of the lifestyle, they take. Now a new educational opportunity is available to those folks. The traditional school curriculum focused on the three R’s— readin ritin , and ‘ rithmetic , but that has changed in this very non-traditional age.

Driving Your RV Safely It's fun traveling with your home as you explore the different regions of the country. However, it can be dangerous if you are not familiar with the differences that the weight, size, and visibility demands of your RV driving. The transition from driving the family car to driving an RV is different, but not necessarily difficult. The points discussed below will help you to be a safe RV driver. RV Heights Most RVs are taller than passenger vehicles so you will need to learn quickly about road clearances, service station canopies, bridge heights, and to watch for low hanging obstacles such as trees branches. Your owner's manual, your RV dealer, or the RV manufacturer are the best sources for helping you determine the maximum road height of your RV. Once you know, post the height somewhere on the RV or in the tow vehicle so it will always be handy as a reference.
