** Description **
"In this thought-provoking, well-written, and fairminded book, Ewa Thompson addresses the complicity of Russian literature and even literary scholarship in furthering the goals of Russian colonialism and imperialism. A fresh perspective on the culture of Russian literature from the time of Pushkin to the post-Soviet period, Imperial Knowledge is a timely challenge to the usual ways Russian literature is read and taught." Harold B. Segel Professor Emeritus of Slavic and Comparative Literature Columbia University
"A pioneering bookvigorous, provocative, broadly informed and crisply written. Not to be ignored by anyone concerned with Russian culture." Donald Fanger Harry Levin Research Professor of Literature Harvard University
"An erudite and magisterial study."

Two types of major are available to students. Both require Russian 15 and Russian 31, which can be omitted only by vote of the entire Department. 1. The Major in Russian Prerequisite: Russian 27. Requirements: Russian 15; Russian 28 and 29; Russian 31 and 32; and a course which constitutes the culminating experience. (Russian 71, 86, or 87, the Honors Thesis, all may serve as the culminating experience in the Russian major.) In addition to these six core courses, students are required to take four more courses in Russian. Eligible courses may include Russian 23 and up to two courses numbered in the teens; the remaining courses must be numbered 35 or higher. Note : Students may receive a certificate in Russian Area Studies by (1) completing all the requirements for the major in Russian and (2) taking four courses from among those offerings in other departments that may normally be used to satisfy the requirements for the Russian Area Studies Major (see the following paragraph). Such students will have both the major in Russian and the certificate in Russian Area Studies listed on their transcripts.

The Department is located in building "Â", entrance 2, 1st floor, upper level. Brief History
The Department of Military Books was established in 1929 under General Agreement between the People's Commissariat of Army and Navy (now the Ministry of Defence) and the All-Union Lenin Public Library "in order to concentrate collections of military books in one place and to facilitate their use for research". The People's Commissariat of Army and Navy passed to the Library a rich book collection of Red Army Headquarters, which numbered 358,500 books and many other valuable publications. A part of these - 114,000 items - formed the specialised collection of Military Department (currently the Department of Military Literature), the rest went to the other collections of the Library. This collection had been developed for more than 100 years and formerly belonged to one of the best military libraries of Europe, the Library of General Headquarters of the Russian Army, founded in 1811. General Information
The Department of Military Literature became a centre of military books and military bibliography and, by Order of the Minister of Defence No. 300 of 1995, functions as the Central Library of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

    Early history
Old Russian literature consists of several sparse masterpieces written in the Old Russian language (not to be confused with the contemporaneous Church Slavonic ). Anonymous works of this nature include The Tale of Igor's Campaign (Слово о Полку Игореве, Slovo o Polku Igoreve) and the Praying of Daniel the Immured (Моление Даниила Заточника, or Moleniye Daniila Zatochnika). The so-called (zhitiya svyatikh, lives of the saints ) formed a popular genre of the Old Russian literature. The Life of Alexander Nevsky (Житие Александра Невского, or Zhitiye Aleksandra Nevskogo) offers a well-known example. Other Russian literary monuments include
