One of these rights is to speak in one's native tongue. However, some linguists believe that the number of world languages could halve over the course of this century. Scholars estimate that more than 9,000 languages died in the past two centuries as the result of wars, epidemics, acts of genocide, and the process of assimilation, "Rossiya" reported on 11 November 2004. Of the almost 7,000 languages living today, half of them can be found in only eight countries of the world; one of these countries is Russia, according to "Rossiya."

Land Rights and Culture: Russian Indigenous Leaders Tour the Pacific Northwest Articles Press Releases Reports Links ... In The News Pacific Environments Newsletter, Vol. II, No. 3, Summer 2001
By Sibyl Diver The scenario: An industrializing society that has become dependent on massive amounts of oil, gas, timber, minerals, and fish aggressively pushes its wilderness frontier for these resources to feed a growing appetite. In so doing, it collides head on with indigenous cultures that have been living in tune with the natural cycles of the land for thousands of generations. Slaughter, enslavement, genocide, and disease run rampant, as entire tribes are eliminated, and the surviving tribes are marginalized.
Over the course of just a fe w generations, industry leaves deep scars on both the cultural and natural landscape, and the government attempts to forcibly assimilate the indigenous peoples through education programs, while destructive elements like alcohol are introduced to the tribes. But the tribes begin to organize, and reclaim their culture. They form organizations, build alliances, and begin to demand their rights as indigenous peoples whose way of life is being destroyed by an industrialization process that was forced down their throats.

Survival International Site created by A.Filtchenko: 28/12/1999 updated by A.Filtchenko: 01/05/01 SIBERIA Siberia is a part of Asian territory of Russian Federation between Ural mountains in the West and the mountains of the Pacific Ocean watershed in the East; between Arctic Ocean in the North and the steppes of Kazakhstan Republic and Mongolia in the South. It stretches 3500km North to South and 7000km West to East with a total territory of some 10.000.000 km2. In accordance with its geographic and climatic conditions it is divided into Western (occupying predominantly Western lowlands and Altai mountains) and Eastern Siberia (comprising elevation occupying mostly the Mid Siberian plateau). Western Siberia occupies the territory between the Ural mountains in the West and the Yenisey River in the East. Most of the territory presents a woody lowland (taiga) rich with marsh, rivers and numerous lakes, in the North transforming into tundra ecosystem and in the South into more elevated open lands and rocky Altai mountains. THE SAAMI
Archaeological finds testify to the fact that the first people appeared on the Kola peninsula about 5 thousand years ago. The aboriginal population were the Saami (the Lapps). Their language belongs to the Finnish language group, their anthropological type is mixed having the features of European and Mongolian types. From 1478 the Kola peninsula became a part of the Russian State. The Russians brought their religion with them and in the middle of the XVI century the Saami also adopted Christianity (Orthodox). It had a double effect: on the one hand people became harder, on the other hand it stimulated their acquaintance with Russian culture and brought the two peoples closer. 1) fishing (in the lakes and rivers)
2) reindeer breeding
3) hunting. They led a semi-nimadic life. In pre-Revolutionary Russia the Saami were practically a doomed nationality. They starved and suffered from numerous diseases, they were oppressed by the local and visiting merchants. From the first days of the Soviet power the government took the great concern for the development of small nationalities of the North (saami, nenzy and komi).

The Hammonds visited the town of Tashtagol, neighbouring Shoret villages, and the forests of the region.

Indigenous Peoples Exchange - About What are the core beliefs that are the basis of a healthy society? Why do some cultures last a few hundred years while others last thousands? Who can help humanity think long-term when there is tremendous pressure to seek short term gain?
Despite the conventional idea that indigenous peoples have all but disappeared along with their teachings, throughout the world there are courageous representatives of the First Nations who are presenting a deeply compelling alternate world-view to the one that dominates our lives. During the past few years these humble voices for the Earth are getting louder and Sacred Earth Network has been fortunate enough to listen.
The wisest of these voices recall their own prophecies about a time when humans would be consuming the Earth and in response, the keepers of legend, stories, culture, rituals, and myths, and all the ancient tribal customs would be needed to restore the land and people to health. They would represent all four races and be humankind's key to survival. They were called by the Cree and others "Warriors of the Rainbow" and their main strategy is one of unifying superficial differences and cutting through the illusion of separation. Chief Arvol Looking Horse, one of Native America's foremost spiritual leaders says it well: "We are the watchers. We are the witnesses. We see what has gone before. We see what happens now, at this dangerous moment in human history. We see what's going to happen, what will surely happen unless we come together-we , the Peoples of all Nations-to restore peace, harmony and balance to the Earth, our Mother."

most indigenous people anywhere else, that is for some thousand years.
In newer times, about the end of the 17th century, Itelmen s and Ainu lived in the far south.
For an economy based on hunting and gathering, Kamchatka was rather densely inhabited.
Small communities dotted the coasts and river valleys; many of them were not more than a day's walk from one another. The Ainu, an isolated group of unknown origin, inhabited Southern Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands, and probably Southern Kamchatka. When at the beginning of the 18th century, the inhabitants were forced to pay a fur tribute

World Bank Expert: Navin K. Rai Overview There are about 250 million indigenous people worldwide. Indigenous people are distinct populations in that the land on which they live, and the natural resources on which they depend, are inextricably linked to their identities and cultures. Therefore, dispossession or restriction of access brings not only economic impoverishment but also loss of identity and threats to their cultural survival. The World Bank’s Indigenous Peoples Policy On May 10, 2005, the Bank’s Executive Directors endorsed a revised policy on Indigenous Peoples.
