A guide to Soviet and russian history avaliable online in the English language. on russian history translated into English and available electronically.
    http://www.uea.ac.uk/his/webcours/russia/welcome/
    Welcome
    Introduction
This website is designed to give students speedy access to the rich array of sources on Russian history translated into English and available electronically. Since the collapse of the USSR a host of different organizations, academic and non-academic, have posted on the web a mass of valuable documents as well as maps, posters, photographs and other visual images. The scale of this activity is a measure of the scholarly interest, ideological passion, and political/diplomatic concern that modern Russian history generates. That it does so is no mystery: the stakes have been so high, the culture so rich, the abuse of power so monstrous, the resistance so articulate, the grandeur and the tragedy of the Russian story of such epic proportions. At UEA there is a strong tradition of teaching and research in the field, currently headed by Professor Edward Acton and Dr Roger Munting in the School of History. Dr Mike Bowker and Dr Tony Kemp-Welch in the School of Social and Economic Studies provide additional expertise in Russian politics and international relations. This website project builds on that tradition. It is funded by a HEFCE Teaching Fellowship awarded to Professor Acton and is being carried out by Dr King, who took his doctorate at UEA and is a specialist in Soviet history. What the site does is to integrate the Internet material directly into our key Russian history units: the year-long 'Russian Revolution Special Subject' (Level III) and, in Semester II, 'The History of the Soviet Union, 1917-1991' (Level II) and 'Gorbachev and the Break-Up of the USSR' (MA). Key features include:

    The Faith in
    Russian History
by Warren H. Carroll, Ph.D. From the beginning of their Christian history, it has been the special call and mission of the Slavic peoples to suffer for the Faith, to be nailed to the Cross with Christ. This has been the great theme of the history of both Poland and Russia. Christianity came to Russia through Ukraine, the two not then being separated, in 988 by the conversion of the king of Kiev, St. Vladimir. Before his conversion he had killed his brother and engaged in human sacrifice; afterwards he became a ruler of notable charity and gentleness who was only with difficulty persuaded that it was ever lawful for a Christian monarch to wage war. His instruction in the Faith came from Constantinople when he married the Eastern Emperor's daughter Anna, but he was also in touch with the Pope through Holy Roman Empress Mother Theophano, Anna's sister. A papal embassy went to Russia in 990, probably in response to reports of Vladimir's conversion, and was received by him "with love and honor" in 991, the year in which local chroniclers first mention "Russian bishops" at Vladimir's court. There are good reasons to believe that these "Russian bishops" were of the Latin rite, though using the Slavonic liturgy developed by Sts. Cyril and Methodius. The earliest Russian word for bishop

    SUCCESSORS OF ROME:
    RUSSIA, 862-Present
    Introduction
When St. Vladimir accepted Christianity in 989, Russia took the first step in what would become a mission to assume the heritage of Constantinople . After the Grand Dukes of Moscow had shaken off the hold of the remaining Mongol successor states, and the "New Rome" of Constantinople had itself fallen to the Turks in 1453, the way was clear for Moscow to become the "Third Rome" and the Duke the "Tsar of All the Russias." Universal Roman pretentions continued after the fall of the Tsars but, unlike Hitler in Germany, the Communists Lenin and Stalin, however tsar-like their power, wished to owe no debt or acknowledge any continuity to the ideology of the earlier empire. The Soviet Union was no successor to Rome or Constantinople but a new synthesis of the dialectic of history. The conversion of Russia to Christianity brought with it the Cyrillic alphabet, which was promoted by the Soviet Union for use even with entirely unrelated languages, like the Turkish of Central Asia. Because of Russian imperial acquisitions, however, other alphabets crept into use. Poland and the Baltic States brought with them the Latin alphabet characteristic of Francia
