        COURSE GOALS
In the past 15 years, no part of the world map has changed more than the region of
Eurasia formerly covered by the Soviet Union and its allies. The course will offer
an overview of geographical, or "place-based," studies of the former "Socialist"
Bloc (once dominated by the USSR), including natural and human resources,
historical geography, ethnic and religious divisions, environmental questions,
and economic and political organization. The course will not simply cover
present-day Russia and Eastern Europe (or more properly, East-Central Europe).
The course will cover the 15 former republics of the Soviet Union,
the former members of the Warsaw Pact and the former Yugoslav Federation
(see list below ). Each student will closely examine one of these countries

What factors determine city location, growth, and development? How does place influence the spread of disease? These questions form the basis of inquiry for geographers, teachers, and students. In exploring such questions, this video workshop for seventh- through twelfth-grade teachers provides a strong foundation in geography content and inquiry teaching skills, as outlined in the National Geography Standards. The video programs combine case studies that profile locations around the globe, engaging classroom segments, and commentary from geography and pedagogy experts. Activities and discussion questions from the accompanying print guide and Web site supplement the programs, providing for a richer understanding of geography education.

It contains color photographs of contemporary russian life. This is a lesson on the physical and political geography of Russia.
http://www.cstone.net/~bcp/5/5JGeo.htm
Fifth Grade - Geography - Overview - January January's Geography unit consists of two lessons, 12 and 13. Lesson 12 is devoted to Russia. Lesson 13 is devoted to Japan. Both geography lessons provide the background for January's History unit. The history of both countries is influenced by their physical geography. Lesson 12 is titled "Early Growth and Expansion." The theme is Russia's search for warm-water ports. This search is a result of Russia's largely central location on a continent that extends to high latitudes. The result of Russia's location is a harsh climate, which compounds the scarcity of seaports. Russia's location and climate have thus contributed to the country's isolation from the rest of the world. First, use the geography lesson on Russia, Lesson 12. Then, teach the two World History Lessons 20 and 21. Japan is an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. Its insularity has shaped the country's history in that Japanese history is dominated by the theme of isolation. Lesson 13 on the geography of Japan must be used before the two History lessons (Lessons 22 and 23) that follow. The geography lesson on Japan provides the background for the lessons on Japanese history. Both lessons in this unit may be done by students working independently, in groups or individually. The lessons may also be used as teacher-directed activities.

THE GEOGRAPHY OF RUSSIA
A geography provides the stage upon which the history of man is played. Geographic factors have always strongly influenced the development of nations and civilizations. They have frequently also contributed to their decline and fall. In earlier times geographic location helped certain societies to grow rapidly and become powerful. In our day the stubborn facts of geography may yet cause viable nations to decline and disintegrate.
The formerly abundant natural resources are running out, overpopulation, reckless abuse of the land, pollution in all of its putrid varieties are putting the survival of humanity in jeopardy. There are those who predict massive starvation within a century unless new supplies of food are found and exploited. Traditionally geography has been a primary motive for war and conquest. The good earth has been abused too long and is now threatening to take vengeance on the human animal.
In early times closeness to the sea helped the Phoenicians, Athenians, Romans, Portuguese, Spaniards, Dutch, English and Japanese to use it as a system of defense, avenue of communication and source of food. Today all nations may have to resort to the sea again for food to supplement the existing diminishing resources. Continental peoples like the Indians, Chinese and to some extent the Russians have turned away from the sea. Rivers may serve as boundaries or as highways.
The Rhine and Danube did the former for the Romans, the Ohio, Mississippi and Missouri did the latter for the Americans. Rivers can also be means of irrigation. The Nile, Yangtze and Jordan are examples. The Syr Darya is doing the same for the Russians in the Tadjikistan and Uzbekistan desserts. Climates can be stimulating in the temperate zones and enervating in the tropics. Few people take long afternoon siestas in North America, Northern Europe or Russia. Good or bad soil, adequate or inadequate rainfall affect both the spirit and technology of a people.

Russia is situated in the North part of Eurasian continent and has the area of 17,1 million square kilometres. About 1/3 of the Russian territory is situated in Europe, and occupies the main part of the Russian (East-Europe) plain, and also Ural, Pre-Caucasus and north slope of the Big Caucasus. The Asiatic part of Russia is 2/3 of the territory and it includes Siberia and Far East. Russia has outlets to the seas of the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic Oceans. The west extremity of Russia is near Kaliningrad city (in longitude 19'38" West), and the east extremity is in the Bering Sea, Ratmanov Island (east boundary of Russia with the USA). Because of the huge length of the country by longitude, there is the great difference in time between the west and east parts of the country (there are 11 time zones there). The north extremity is on the Rudolf insland in Frans-Iosif land archipelago (in latitude 81'49" North), and the south extremity in on the ridge of the Main Caucasus Ridge (in latitude 41'12" South). And the highest point of Russia is also situated on Caucasus Elbrus Mountain (5642 metres). The main territory of the country is flatty. There are 3 wide plains on the territory of Russia: West-Siberian, Russian and Middle-Siberian plateau. But also there are some mountain regions in Russia: Ural Mountains, Caucasus Mountains, Sayan Mountains, Altai mountains. Active volcanos and geysers are widely spread on Kamchatka peninsula (the Far East of Russia).
