Honored Culture Worker of the RF,
General Director of the Russian State Folk Art Centre One of the mainstream activities of the Russian State Folk Art Centre (RSFAC) is creating an information data bank on traditional culture. In the future it is envisaged to create a Federal data bank on the basis of computer information systems. In 1991 the RSFAC took the first practical steps in using a computer on behalf of folk art: it bought the appropriate equipment and began collaborating with software developers. After a short time the RSFAC has elaborated a scientific subprogram "Structure of an information data bank on Russian traditional handicraft" and began working out the "Project for Computerisation of Russian Oral Traditional Culture Fund " In 1992 in the Department of Folklore Fund and Contemporary Technologies, the proposed concept of the information data bank on musical and poetical folklore was being elaborated and at the same time the practical work on computerising information of the RSFAC audio-fund data has been continued. The concept of the multimedia database on Russian traditional culture has being formed on the basis of projects that have been mentioned above, and its co-ordination with computerisation activity has encouraged the formulation of the concepts objectives and tasks.

Studies in the Russian Programme will be of great benefit to students wanting to specialise in a broad number of disciplines: human and social sciences, science and management, law and tourism. Courses can be divided into two basic categories: those devoted to Russian language acquisition, and those devoted to studying the culture, history, and society of Russia and the former Soviet Union. The courses in this second area are taught entirely in English and allow students to study a wide range of Russian culture and society that include literature, film, painting, dance and music. They are a good complement to other studies in European and Eaurasian history and culture. Those who major in Russian will find themselves well-equipped for positions in diplomatic service, public service, law and accounting, journalism, travel and tourism, as well as the traditional career of teaching.

Students can take a sequence of courses in any one area (language and/or culture) from the beginners' stage to the postgraduate level.

The student of Russian first develops a basic competence in the language as a means of communication reading, speaking, aural comprehension, and writing. This competence is then applied to Russian literature, Russia's human past and present. The study of the language and its embodiment in literature and culture can, therefore, serve students whose specializations are in any academic discipline, enhancing their capabilities for research and their appreciation of aesthetic and cultural diversity.
The recommended sequence of study for all students with an interest in Russian language covers four semesters (Russian 101, 102, 221, 222). Those entering with a previous background in Russian are placed in this sequence on the basis of a comprehensive test and an interview with the departmental staff. Opportunities for further study include courses in syntactical and literary analysis of the language and seminars on a broad variety of topics chosen by students. (See Independent Study
The department also offers courses on modern Russian literature in translation (Russian 247, 248, 251, 353). These provide access to Russian literature and culture for students who do not have a command of the language. Russian majors are encouraged to broaden and deepen their understanding of the Russian experience by exploring other disciplines history, philosophy, the social sciences, and the languages and literatures of other national heritages. With this background, they may seek careers in teaching and scholarship, government, library science and informational services, and international trade. In addition, study in mathematics and the natural sciences in conjunction with a Russian major can open doors to many other careers.

http://www.geographia.com/russia/rushis07.htm
The Soviet Era
T he first few years of Soviet rule were marked by an extraordinary outburst of social and cultural change. Although the Bolsheviks had maintained complete control of the economy during the civil war, Lenin decided at its end that a partial return to a market economy would help the country recover from the destruction of the previous three years. His New Economic Policy, or NEP, brought about a period of relative prosperity, allowing the young Soviet government to consolidate its political position and rebuild the country's infrastructure. This was also the period during which the Russian Avant-Garde reached its height, developing the radical new styles of Constructivism, Futurism, and Suprematism . Although the country still faced enormous challenges, there was a widespread sense of optimism and opportunity. As was the case with the Napoleonic Wars, the Soviet Union emerged from World War II considerably stronger than it had been before the war. Although the country suffered enormous devastation and lost more than twenty million lives, it had gained considerable territory and now ranked as one of the two great world powers along with the United States. Nonetheless, life in the country continued to suffer. Industrial production was once again concentrated on heavy industry, agricultural failures produced widespread famine, political freedoms were restricted even further, and another huge wave of purges was carried out. As the Cold War got underway, an increasing proportion of the Soviet Union's resources were funneled into military projects, further exacerbating the quality of life. Stalin remained in power until 1953, when he died of a cerebral hemorrhage.

F rom icons and onion domes to suprematism and the Stalin baroque, Russian art and architecture seems to many visitors to Russia to be a rather baffling array of exotic forms and alien sensibilities. Without any sense of the rich tradition of Russian culture, an appreciation of the country's enormous artistic wealth becomes a game of historical anecdote"the church where so-and-so took refuge from what's-his-name"or a meaningless collection of aesthetic baubles"I like the blue domes the best." In fact, Russian art and architecture are not nearly so difficult to understand as many people think, and knowing even a little bit about why they look the way they do and what they mean brings to life the culture and personality of the entire country. Icons The best collections of icons are to be found in the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum, though of course many Russian churches have preserved or restored their traditional works. The Great Experiment The rising influence of European culture in Russia during the 17th and 18th centuries brought Russian artwork closer to the familiar traditions of western painting. It wasn't until the end of the 19th century that the next great body of uniquely Russian artistic styles arose, having developed in conjunction with liberal forces of social reform. This modern movement took many different directions almost from its inception, and it would be impossible to describe all of them. However, even a very general acquaintance with their common ideas and interests makes their work much more accessible.

Vladimir Shlapentokh The Clinton-Lewinsky scandal (CLS) in 1998-1999 not only punctuated American morals
and political standards, but shed light on several characteristics of foreign societies. As the CLS
took center stage in the international media, the respective national reactions were as diverse as
the countries themselves. The nature of the response was determined by the nation’s culture, the
political and judicial system, popular attitudes toward law, the current political and economic
situation, attitudes toward the dominant elite and the head of state, the head of state’s personal
relationship with President Clinton, the population’s general sentiments about the United States,
and the economic significance of the United States to each nation. Though it may be possible to
speak of a nation’s general stance toward the CLS, there were major differences in the opinions
held by various social groups within each country. Having selected Russia as a case study, I will demonstrate the contrasts and parallels between the American and foreign reactions to the CLS. I will separate moral, judiciary, and

CHAPTER XXIV
THE DECAY OF RUSSIAN SENTIMENT
No, the Russian days of Bessarabia were over, and the Russians had only themselves to thank for it, as is confessed in an interesting article by L. Sotoff, Letters from Bessarabia, in the "Sovremennia Zapiski," no. 5, 1921, pp. 263-270 (I use the reprint in "Istoritcheskaia Pravda po Bessarabskomu Voprosu," pp. 31-34; there is a partial Roumanian translation by Cazacu, pp. 329-330): We can immediately reply calmly to this question: that prospect is unfavorable. In its policy of Roumanizing the country, the Roumanian Government has found fertile soil in the extraordinarily low cultural level of the population of Bessarabia. Having been, up to the Revolution, in the hands of the boyar Black Hundred, this province with its manifold racial elements stood on a very low plane of cultural development. The stupid Russifying and anti-Semitic policy of the autocratic government brought about a situation where the great mass of the Moldavian and Jewish population kept apart from Russian schools, Russian books and in general all elements of Russian culture. Between the Russian intelligentsia and the masses, not only of the Moldavian and Jewish population but also of the purely Russian, there was a great gulf fixed. The Moldavian population was completely alien, not merely to Russian spiritual culture, but also to the Russian civic administration. Alas, the Russifiers reached the point where the peasant who came into town felt as if he were in a dark and mysterious forest! The Zemstvo was in the hands of the pupils of Crushevan (the anti-Semite), while in the Russian State Duma, Bessarabia had outspoken members of the Black Hundred (the boyars). In every government office, they had the right that he should not understand them. Courts, schools, churches, government offices, all were foreign-language institutions for him; and since over and above all this, there ruled a wild arbitrariness, it can easily be imagined to what degree the masses of the Moldavian population remained alien to Russia, alien to its inherent cultural, historical and political value.

Czech Republic To Host Russian Culture Festival
Days of Russian Culture will be held in the Czech region of South Moravia late in February, Denis Grishchenko, Vice Consul of the Russian Consulate General in Brno, announced to reporters.
For the first time, a festival of Russian culture will be held not in the capital of the Czech Republic, but in its second largest city, Brno. The Russian Culture Foundation and the Russian Consulate General in Brno have organized the forthcoming forum while the Russian Embassy in Prague and the Czech Embassy in Moscow will be patronizing it.
The organizers and sponsors of the Days want them to become a high-profile cultural and political event, said Grishchenko. With this objective in mind, they may invite Russian VIPs to attend.
The Russian Culture Days will open in the Brno City Philharmonic. The opening concert will feature pianist Denis Matsuyev, the winner of the 11th Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition's top prize, and violinist Maxim Fedotov, a laureate of many international contests.
The Brno festival will also feature works by contemporary artist Vladimir Sokovin. Local movie theaters will screen Russian cartoons. And the renowned actor and director Oleg Yankovsky is going to present to Czech audiences his latest film, "Come See Me." The highlight of the festival's theatrical program is expected to be the production "The Empress" (telling of Empress Catherine II's private life).
