The New York Public Library
Coordinated Outreach Services Program
Final Report for 2003
If you build them, they will come! Not true for many library communities. Unlike the baseball film "Field of Dreams" where fans and baseball players blindly find their way to the baseball field, libraries need to get the word out! The New York Public Library's Office of Community Outreach Services (CDS) did just that over the last year, working in the communities of The New York Public Library's 85 Branches. Library outreach work is the responsibility of every staff member in The Branch Libraries. Over this past year, 22 professional staff members, of all ages and specialties, participated in the outreach services seminar and received training in the delivery of outreach services. Many of the seminar participants, as part of their seminar assignments, conducted staff meetings at their respective Branches to sensitize the local Branch staff on how to better serve persons with disabilities. Some of the seminar participants opted to convey the sensitivity issues by showing a short video: The Ten Commandments: Serving Persons with Disabilities . One of the seminar participants reached out to incarcerated mothers at the Rikers Island Maternity Unit and established a monthly Baby and Me lapsit program. Others reached out to nursing home residents with reading aloud programs, while others reached out to diverse ethnic populations in their Branch service areas.

Pinckney Wins Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowship
Kim Pinckney '02 has won the prestigious Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowship, designed to help talented minority undergraduate students enter careers in teaching. The Rockefeller provides a $2,500 grant towards the funding of an educational project during the summer prior to the fellow's senior year. Following graduation, the fellow is awarded a $12,000 grant for a full-time, one-year graduate program or a $16,000 grant for a two-year program of graduate study leading to a master's degree. Approximately 25 fellowships were awarded to minority college students, primarily juniors, who are majoring in the liberal arts or sciences. Pinckney is a special major in Education and Spanish.
Lange '02 Has Won Goldwater Scholarship
The Goldwater Foundation announces that Karen Lange, Swarthmore '02, has won a Goldwater Scholarship, "selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,164 mathematics, science and engineering students who were nominated by colleges and universities nation-wide." Karen is an Honors Major in Mathematics and Statistics at Swarthmore. The award provides up to a maximum of $7,500 per year toward the winner's cost of undergraduate expenses. The donor states, "Goldwater Scholars have very impressive academic qualifications that have garnered the attention of prestigious post-graduate fellowship programs, such as the Rhodes and Marshall awards... PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Headline: HE HAS A RHODES, BOUNDLESS CURIOSITY Thursday, December 23, 1999 Page: D03 - Edition: SF Section: FEATURES MAGAZINE / LIFESTYLE By Art Carey BODY: For nearly two hours, Jacob Krich and I discussed some abstruse stuff, and not once did he say "like, you know." For that reason alone, he deserves to be a Rhodes scholar. Earlier this month, Krich, 21, a senior at Swarthmore , was named one of this year's 32 winners of the prestigious scholarships. He has shoulder-length hair and is soft-spoken and tall. To be exact, he's 6-foot-3 and, no, he doesn't play basketball, never has, and is tired of answering questions about it. To qualify for a Rhodes, you don't have to be Bill Bradley. You merely need to demonstrate sufficient physical vigor to pursue your intellectual goals and exercise leadership. Krich keeps his body fit by hiking (he climbed a 13,000-foot peak in Costa Rica last summer) and biking (in fair weather, he'll ride an hour and a half a day to clear his head). He chose Swarthmore over Stanford because he wasn't sure he wanted to be a physicist.

Community Technology Centers: Collaborations That Work There are well over 2,000 Community Technology Centers (CTCs) and related community technology projects that provide a range of technology services to low-income, minority, and hard-to-serve populations across America. Often a community technology effort does not carry the label of a CTC, even though they provide CTC-type services in urban and rural communities.
Libraries, schools, and nonprofit organizations that play a key role in our communities coordinate many community technology efforts. Often the building which houses a community technology center serves as the focal point of community activity, a center for learning and workforce preparedness, a showcase of community collaborations among businesses, government and nonprofit and civic organizations. The number of new programs has been increasing exponentially as communities recognize that access to technology is a key to economic empowerment, workforce competitiveness, and community building.

    Russia
Introduction [Top of Page] Background: The defeat of the Russian Empire in World War I led to the seizure of power by the communists and the formation of the USSR. The brutal rule of Josef STALIN (1924-53) strengthened Russian dominance of the Soviet Union at a cost of tens of millions of lives. The Soviet economy and society stagnated in the following decades until General Secretary Mikhail GORBACHEV (1985-91) introduced glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring) in an attempt to modernize communism, but his initiatives inadvertently released forces that by December 1991 broke up the USSR into 15 independent republics. Since then, Russia has struggled in its efforts to build a democratic political system and market economy to replace the strict social, political, and economic controls of the communist period. Geography [Top of Page] Location: Northern Asia (that part west of the Urals is sometimes included with Europe), bordering the Arctic Ocean, between Europe and the North Pacific Ocean

Once there, you would lay claim to an entire table so you could lay out encyclopedias, dictionaries, English books to help with punctuation and sentence structure. Now, term papers and writing assignments are as easy as turning on your computer. With a good word processor and a connection to the Internet, an A on your homework or a job promotion for your presentation is only a keystroke away. T he Internet can be a wonderful source of information for anyone who is looking for help with English or in writing letters, stories or essays. Of course, the best idea is to go straight to a search engine such as Infoseek, Yahoo or Alta Vista for help. A large number of the sites related to grammar are linked to each other. Everything is available on the Internet; grammar rules and examples of each; colleges that contain lessons and tests; explanations of punctuation rules and sites that merely 'talk' about the English language and the rules governing it. There are even sites that have all of the above. I have attempted to find a large sampling of the previously mentioned web sites that deal with grammar, punctuation, and writing.
