    INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS MAJOR
    An Interdisciplinary Major
Administered by the Department of Political Science This major is designed to give students the opportunity to engage in a multi-disciplinary study of the variety of subjects concerned with international affairs. Successful completion of the major does not assure job placement in an international career. It does offer a number of advantages to students seeking entry placement in domestic and overseas private sector firms and non-governmental organizations where a premium is placed on the ablility to interact successfully with people and economic and politics practices in other cultures. It also provides an excellent foundation for more specialized graduate study in international studies, and for taking entry level examinations into international service. All students follow a series of core courses in Political Science and Economics. In addition, students choose from one of a number of concentrations in the areas of International Business and Economics, Western European Studies, Central Europe and the Former Soviet Union, Asia, and a combined concentration in Africa and the Middle East. For each of these concentrations students take four courses from a recommended list. Students, with the agreement of the International Relations (IR) Director, may also design their own concentration if a grouping of appropriate courses is available. In addition to the analytic tools of Political Science and Economics, all IR majors are required to demonstrate competence in at least one major world foreign language at a level comparable to two years of college instruction. Competence may be demonstrated either by completing course work or passing an examination. Non-native English speakers may submit English as their foreign language. All other students must obtain approval for their language and show its relevance to their area of concentration. IR majors are encouraged to gain or deepen their language competence through a period of residence and/or study abroad. The Department works closely with the Center for International Services and Programs to develop study abroad opportunities for IR majors. In some cases scholarship support may be available to assist with travel expenses. Foreign language majors or minors are welcome to double major in International Relations.

Businesses that anticipate a range of possible futures for Russia will be better able to formulate robust strategies and enjoy a significant competitive advantage. The World Economic Forum is launching a large-scale scenario development effort on the possible futures of Russia that closely involves senior executives from leading global companies (within and outside Russia), thought-leaders and scenario practitioners. The scenarios will frame the discussions at the World Economic Forum in Russia meeting in October 2005, and at the Annual Meeting 2006, with top business and political leaders. An executive summary of the scenarios will also be released to the media and public at the meetings.

AFTER the fall of communism in Europe, small and medium-sized firms were quick to take advantage of the new Central and Eastern European markets that opened up to the West. However, while Poland and Hungary, for example, have attracted 51,000 and 27,000 foreign SMEs respectively, smaller businesses have avoided Russia until recently. NI_MPU('middle'); Mako Rusia of the Russo-British Chamber of Commerce, says that the number of smaller firms joining the chambers has risen in the past two years. A survey by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development found that regulatory burdens and red tape topped the list of perceived obstacles to enterprise development. Setting up a business in Russia can take up to a month and involve 20 licences and permits, while in the UK it takes fewer contracts and only one day. Foreign investors are also worried about corruption and heavy-handed government.
