wwwhat's online in russia By Sarah Karush
AN ASTROPHYSICIST living in Toronto, Canada, just might be the most popular man in Russia. Dima Verner is the founder and editor of "Anecdotes From Russia" ( www.anekdot.ru ), an enormous collection of Russian jokes on the Internet. About 25,000 people visit his site on an average weekday, some checking in a dozen times for a dose of Russian humor. Verner's Web site is proof that Russians have begun to really sink their teeth into the entertainment possibilities of the Internet. Forget stuffy talks on Pushkin around a cup of chai in a cramped Soviet kitchen. Nowadays, to get a dose of Russian culture, all you need is Internet access and a few downloaded Cyrillic fonts. (You can, of course, find a sample of Pushkin's poetry - along with that of hundreds of other poets, past and present - at ( www.metro.ru

BITTERSWEET MEMORIES ON DISPLAY
By Rebecca Wallace
Chagall Exhibition in Budapest It’s the perfect match – one of the largest synagogue buildings in the world hosting the works of one of Judaism’s most beloved artists. A vibrant exhibit of Marc Chagall’s paintings and drawings entitled "Landscapes of Memory" is on display at the Jewish Museum and Archives in the Dohány Street Synagogue complex until the middle of October. "Landscapes of Memory" covers a wide range of themes, from Old Testament prophets to scenes of war. It also combines the artist’s more well known colorful oil paintings with ink and pencil drawings.
Her white gown makes her the focal point in a primary-colored landscape. Also rich in warmth is the lovely 1977 work "The Family," in which a rapt-faced woman in a Russian village holds her child. With typically dream-like touches, Chagall includes people in shades of blue and gray watching kindly over the woman as if to remind her that she is part of a wealth of tradition. In the Magrittesque 1949 work "Wall Clock with Blue Wing," a clock floats above a village in a black sky, with the barest outline of a man with a pack on his back below. The tender "Bella and “The large 1910 painting "The Wedding" shows a demure bride escorted by grinning townspeople and musicians”

WORLDGUIDE Introduction See Eat Sleep Night Shop Image Gallery Activities Events Transport Money Essential Info RELATED Thorn Tree Forum Postcards Travel Links St Petersburg has been dubbed the Venice of the North for its palace-lined waterways. It managed to escape the architectural incursions of Stalinism and its grandiose relics of tsarist days are rather intact. Sculpted by islands and the sinuous Neva River, the city is a vista of geometric elegance. Within this geometry is a dust-devil of influences and styles and a bewitching vortex of life's extremes. It's breathtakingly gorgeous, it's ruefully falling apart; it's viscerally sensual, it's crude and vulgar; its very essence gets under your skin, but remains forever outside your grasp.
When To Go
St Petersburg is a year-round destination. The city's northern latitude means long days in summer and long nights in winter - but in winter, hotels and tourist attractions are less crowded and there's a twinkling magic to the night sky. While the White Nights in mid-summer are undeniably beautiful, some people find them disconcerting.

For most westerners, Russia is associated with its European citiesMoscow, St. Petersburg and Murmansk. This is the heartland of Imperial Russia, and these great and ancient cities often become the focus for most tourists. However there is much more to Russia, a country that spans eleven time zones and two continents, ending less than 50 miles from North America. Within this vast expanse lie the largest freshwater lake in the world, rivers and forests teeming with fish and wildlife, awe inspiring volcanos, and towering mountains. Russia is the largest country on earth, with enormous tracts of land that have been opened to travelers only in the last few years.

The Museum of Russian Art President and Director Brad Shinkle says the universal reaction he gets from visitors to the museum is "this is not what I was expecting." (MPR Photo/Greta Cunningham) The only museum in the United States devoted to Russian art created in the Soviet era opened earlier this month in Minneapolis. The current exhibition features 50 works of art chronicling 100 years of life in the former Soviet Union.
The Museum of Russian Art
Shinkle says most Americans think Soviet-era art is comprised of either large portraits of significant Soviet leaders, like Stalin, or propaganda posters. Shinkle says these two categories are a small slice of Soviet art. He says most of the art is similar to the work produced by French and English impressionist painters.
