Unfortunately, even to this Russophile, most of the items are not very interesting, nor are they plentiful, nor even Russian. The tsarina, a German-born granddaughter of Queen Victoria, adorned her apartments with Victorian and Art Deco furnishings of German, French and English origin. She also had a fondness for English chintz. Aside from the icons, a few of which are exceptionally beautiful, most items in this exhibit are typical of the possessions of a European aristocratic family at the time.

Russian mini-sub crew is safe after being trapped for three days (2 comments; last comment posted August 7, 2005 09:23 am) print email this story
August 7, 2005 PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, Russia - A British remote-controlled vehicle cut loose a Russian mini-submarine that had been snarled on undersea cables for three days deep in the Pacific, and it surfaced Sunday with its crew safe.
All seven aboard the AS-28 mini-submarine appeared to be in satisfactory condition, naval spokesman Capt. Igor Dygalo said. About five hours after their rescue, six of them were brought to a hospital on the mainland for examination, waving to relatives as they went in. The seventh was kept aboard a hospital ship for unspecified reasons.
At the edge of the gangplank leading off the ship that brought the crew to shore, mini-sub commander Lt. Vyacheslav Milashevsky held a long and solemn salute, then a slight smile crossed his face. Pale, but walking confidently, he responded "fine" when journalists clamored to know how he felt. He climbed into a van for the trip to the hospital.

St. Nikolas. Icon. Early 20th century
Religion was persecuted and desecrated after the October 1917 revolution and the Civil War in Russia. Together with churches and cathedrals - historical and cultural monuments of the Russian people, remarkable icons and frescoes were also lost. Kholui's icon painting workshops were closed. Kholui painters had to look for jobs, painting houses, cars at railway stations, barges at piers, road milestones and swing-beam barriers. Excellent painters were for long unable to show their worth at that time of trouble and starvation and entertained bitter thoughts of art.

The new Moscow style of ikon painting was heavily influenced by foreign Greek and Serbian artists who were imported by the relatively wealthy Moscow Princes to paint the new churches of their city. In 1378 Theophanes, a Greek artist, painted the church of the Transfiguration in Moscow. His work in Russia was greeted with astonishment by local artists. Theophanes worked very fast and his style was extremely expressive and mystical. He could draw a large figure in fresco on a wall with guide books or drafts, a bravura performance which dumfounded the Russia artists, who had been trained to careful copy from pattern books. Local artists tried to imitate his style, but their work shows how difficult it was to master his free and easy-flowing style.
