ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia (AP) Water began seeping into a mine in southern Russia, trapping 49 miners about 800 meters (2624.67 feet) underground Thursday, emergency officials said. The miners were working in the Zapadnaya mine in Shakty in the Rostov-on-Don region, about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) south of Moscow, when the accident happened, said Andrei Somishchenko, duty officer at the Emergency Situations Ministry's southern office. He said that all of the mine's electrical systems had shut down, including the platform that lifts the workers out of the mine. A team of 38 rescuers were on the site, trying to reach the men. Officials said they were still not sure what had caused the water seepage. Accidents are common in the Russian coal industry, and miners stage frequent protests over wage delays and declining safety standards. According to the Independent Coal Miners' Union, 68 miners were killed on the job last year and 98 in 2001.

Introduction to Russian Martial Art

No rank, no rules, no pre-orchestrated movement, no limitations (except for the "Law of Nature"), Russian Martial Art is a system of education in human biomechanics and the study of human behavior under extreme situations. Students of Russian Martial Art are guided to introspect their vision to explore their full human potential. The learning environment is based upon ease, equality and enjoyment. Movement is natural and free, and acquirement of skill is based on the study of Russian folk dances, Slavic folklore, and natural laws of interdisciplinary kinesiology, biomechanics, and psycho-physiology.
The folk wisdom of ancient Slavic martial traditions dates to the activity of the proto-Indo-European nomadic warrior-hunters of approximately 5,000 BCE, passed recorded from father to son in families for generations of pre-Soviet Russia, and then only among the elite combat specialist subdivisions ("Spetsnaz") of the former USSR. Only one Americans in history, Scott Sonnon was inducted as an instructor of this long, noble heritage in the attempt to bring the world together in fraternity. The training system, in America, for people of sound mind, improves quality of life, through Russian health system, sport science advancements, and elite combative preparation. In the year 2000, one of the sportive derivations of Russian Martial Art, named Sambo, will be an Olympic sport.

MOSCOW (CNN) The appearance of Russian bombers over the Atlantic Ocean on the heels of NATO's successful bombing campaign against Yugoslavia underscores Moscow's urgency to rescue its military from years of neglect. NATO' air campaign in the heart of southeast Europe was a stark reminder to Russia's generals of the growing disparity between its military might and that of Western powers. The Russian government has promised to boost military spending to 28.5 percent of the budget, or $6.7 billion. The United States has proposed a defense budget of $280 billion for the coming year.

Surveillance tunnel under Russian Embassy revealed
WASHINGTON (CNN) U.S. intelligence agencies built a secret surveillance tunnel under the Soviet Embassy in Washington, present and former U.S. officials told CNN Sunday. Vice President Dick Cheney, himself a former defense secretary, and other senior Bush administration officials declined comment on the tunnel's existence. But counterintelligence sources told CNN's David Ensor that the tunnel under what is now the Russian Embassy was packed with sophisticated intelligence-gathering equipment worth several hundred million dollars. It is not clear how long it operated. The existence of the tunnel came to light last week when it was revealed that investigators looking into the case of accused spy Robert Hanssen believe he may have told Moscow about the tunnel. Hanssen, a 25-year veteran of the FBI and a counterintelligence expert, was arrested Feb. 18 on charges that he spied for the Soviet Union and later Russia for 15 years, dating back to the waning days of the Cold War.

Article about solo exhibitions of paintings by artists expatriated from Russia.
http://www.post-gazette.com/magazine/19981003thomas6.asp
Romanian, Russian expatriates conjure up mysteries of home Saturday, October 03, 1998 By Mary Thomas, Post-Gazette Arts Writer Two very different but equally engaging solo exhibitions of paintings by artists expatriated from Romania and Russia shed light on a part of Europe that for all of its touted recent openness remains mysterious. The viewer doesn't have to be a fan of cloak-and-dagger politics to be seduced by the narrative quality of these gorgeously painted, lavishly detailed, representational works. One searches visual clues for messages encoded in scapes that are fantastical or all-too-real, and for insight about the mindset of the artists who are products of these cultural systems. "The Paintings of Valentin Lustig" is at Carnegie Mellon University's Hewlett Gallery, in the College of Fine Arts, through Oct. 25. "Cruel Russia: Recent Paintings by Vadim Bjasso" is at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, 6300 Fifth Ave., Shadyside, through Nov. 1. Lustig was born in Romania in 1955, emigrated with his family to Israel where he completed high school, and now lives in Switzerland. The 11 paintings shown are on loan from private collections, including that of Edith Balas, CMU professor of art history and curator of the exhibition. Balas contextualizes Lustig's fanciful, dreamy compositions stylistically within magic realism, a juxtapositioning of the empirical and the improbable often seen in Latin film and literature.

Russian gays face banning law
Public displays of homosexuality would be banned by the proposed law By CNN's Jill Dougherty MOSCOW, Russia Russia is considering introducing a law banning publicly promoting homosexuality just as the gay community is enjoying new found freedoms. Just 10 years ago, Russia repealed the Soviet-era law criminalising homosexual relations with penalties of five years in prison. Men, out for a night of dancing in Moscow gay clubs of today, could have been arrested and now they face a similar threat from the proposed new law. Russian mixed signals over Kyoto
Signatories will have to cut their gas emission levels to 5.2 percent below their 1990 levels by 2012. Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Kyoto Protocol Russia Global warming Environment or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? MOSCOW, Russia Russia has not ruled out ratifying the Kyoto protocol, a Russian government official says, apparently contradicting earlier indications Moscow will block the environment pact. Russia had not reached a decision on whether to ratify the landmark global climate treaty, Deputy Economic Development and Trade Minister Mukhamaed Tsikanov said on Wednesday, according to the Interfax news agency. On Monday, a top Kremlin aide, Andrei Illarionov, indicated Russia would effectively destroy the agreement as it threatened economic growth it its current form. As a major carbon dioxide producer, Russia's support is crucial to the treaty, which sets targets for countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The pact cannot acquire the force of international law if Moscow rejects it because Russia's industrial emissions are so high it is the world's top polluter. The United States has already pulled out of the Kyoto agreement and major fossil fuel exporter Australia had also declined to sign.

Humor
Russian Jokes Political Jokes.
One of the most common targets of Russian political jokes during the Soviet regime was the Jew, often portrayed as a character named Rabinowich (considered to be an exclusively Jewish last name in Russia). In addition to being blamed for any and all difficulties faced by Russians as a whole, Jews were caught between opposing sides in major political debates as well. For example, those who hated communism blamed Jews for establishing and maintaining its power, while communist sympathizers believed that Jews wrote and spread jokes about their form of government.
Chapayev

Cha-pa-yev, Vasily I (1887-1919). Russian military hero; Red army leader during civil war (1918-1919); commanded the 25th division around Samara (Kuibyshev). He was surrounded and wounded while in pursuit of Kolchak's routed army, and he drowned in the Ural River while attempting to escape. [Websters's Biographical Dictionary].
Mother-in-Law

The majority of young couples in Russia live with either the wife's or the husband's parents. Most newlyweds would prefer a life of their own, free from parental constraint; unfortunately, very few apartments are freely available for rent in Russia, as most are assigned to particular families for life. Being forced to live under the same roof inevitably leads to unpleasantness and even hatred between a man and his mother-in-law. In extreme cases, the conflict between them leads to a divorce between the man and his wife. The anectodes about mothers-in-law have always been among the most popular among all jokes told in Russia. However, most Americans do not find them as funny as the average Russian (most likely because American men are much less frequently forced to endure their mother-in-law's wrath in her own house). Here are a few examples of Russian mother-in-law jokes.
