By ROBIN EISGRAU Offoffoff.com This group show is subterranean in two ways: all the artists are bubbling under the radar of the established art world and the exhibit space is located two flights below street level making for a truly underground experience. The artists here are all young and of Russian extraction and are living in the New York, Philadelphia or New Jersey areas. As show coordinator Anna Repp (who at the opening was resplendent in a beautiful green gown) put it, "We're all friends and recently out of school. We all went to Pratt, where they don't give everyone a senior show." Repp sought to create an environment with this show and that she did; the artwork hanging among the stone walls gives the impression of a cabin filled with visual treasure.

New York: Farrar Straus Giroux, 1994.192 pp. $12.00 paperback. The story of Norton Dodge is an unlikely and engaging one. As a professor of economics at the University of Maryland, he made numerous trips to the Soviet Union at the height of the cold war, ostensibly carrying out research, but his real passion was the "unofficial" art of Russia that he bought and exported to the United States in great quantities. On his visits to all corners of the USSR between 1955 and 1977, Dodge was able to amass an unparalleled collection of dissident art. Dodge first traveled to the Soviet Union to do research for a book on the role of women in the Soviet economy. His interest in dissident art quickly became an obsession that would last more than two decades, until Dodge felt that the risks were too great to continue. Although unable to give the artists a public outlet in their own country, he purchased their works at prices that some would call fair, others generous. he gave them publicity in the West, at least in certain circles (public showings were rare, especially at first). Most important, he almost singlehandedly ensured the survival of an entire era of Russian art. One Russian artist referred to Dodge as "the Lorenzo de Medici of Russian art."

    Paperback: 0-374-52450-5; $12.00US I n the 1960s and 1970s, an American professor of Soviet economics forayed on his own in the Soviet Union, bought the work of underground "unofficial" artists, and brought it out himself or arranged to have it illegally shipped to the United States. Norton Dodge visited the apartments of unofficial artists in at least a dozen geographically scattered cities. By 1977, he had a thousand works of art. His ultimate window of interest involved the years from 1956 to 1986, and through his established contacts he eventually acquired another eight thousand worksby far the largest collection of its kind. John McPhee investigates Dodge's clandestine activities in the service of dissident Soviet art, his motives for his work, and the fates of several of the artists whose lives he touched. The Ransom of Russian Art is a suspenseful, chilling, and fascinating report on a covert operation like no other. Reviews An excellent survey of the artistic worlds of Moscow, Leningrad, and other Soviet cities during the neo-Stalinist deep freeze. David Remnick

    Bloomberg NEW YORK The first combined sale of Russian paintings and works of art at Sotheby's in New York earned $35,167,720, making it the most successful auction of Russian art in history. Led by a pair of 1825 porcelain vases and rare works of Faberge, the auction earned considerably more than the total pre-sale estimate of $15 million to $22 million. It was Sotheby's second-most lucrative auction so far this year, trailing only a ?37.6 million ($71.98 million) sale of Impressionist and modern art in London in February. This is only an excerpt from the full story.

    RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF ARTS The world prestige of Russian fine arts and together with it of Russian art school is a common knowledge. Presented here educational institutions are the highest section of the domestic system of artistic education formed throughout 200 years under the aegis of the Russian Academy of Arts established in 1757 on the initiative of count I.I.Shuvalov, one of the important figures of Russian Enlightenment. The studies started in 1758 simultaneously in several classes (painting, sculpture, architecture, engraving and medallist). And 6 years later under the royal edict of the empress Catherine II "The Privileges and the Charter of the Imperial Academy of Three Notable Arts" appeared. This document gave the Academy a special status which defined the directions of its activity for many years ahead. One of the main functions of the Academy has always been professional training and upbringing of highly qualified artists. The achievement of good results was promoted by the thought out in detail organization of the educational process. Training in drawing became its topical point (there was strict graduality in its teaching: first drawing from originals, that is from drawings and prints of universally recognized masters, then from "plaster" - moulds from antique sculpture and only after that the students were admitted to model classes). The strictly adjusted succession of compositional tasks, compulsory copying of classic specimen in drawing, painting and sculpture also played an essential role. As a rule the studies at the Imperial Academy of Arts completed by a rather complicated compositional graduation work. The most gifted graduating students were given themes for "programmes" to gain gold medals of the first and second value with the right to trawel abroad to "master arts".

The development of Russian modernism in the visual arts is explored in relation, on the one hand, to Russian cultural traditions and the social and historical context of contemporary Russia, and, on the other, to international modernist art movements in this period, in particular in France, Germany and Italy. How did Russian artists assimilate and transform contemporary Western artistic ideas and practices on their own terms? Aims:
    • to study the formation of Russian modernism in the visual arts in the historical context of modernisation and social revolutions;

    Introduction Russian is the most important of the Slavic languages and now one of the major languages of the world. The emergence of the Soviet Union in the postwar period as a major world power, coupled with tmpressive achievements in science and technology, has significantly increased the interest in and the study of Russian in recent years. With English, French, Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic, Russian is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Russian is written in the Cyrillic alphabet, whose origin dates from the 9th century. Its creators were two missionaries from Greece, the brothers Cyril and Methodius, who based it largely on the Greek. Though appearing formidable to one who has never studied it, the Russian alphabet is not difficult to learn. A number of letters are written and pronounced approximately as in English ( A, K, M, 0, T

IVAN SEKRETAREV/AP Russian art or religious hatred? By Fred Weir MOSCOW On orders from Russia's parliament, Moscow prosecutors are probing a question that could create new limits on free speech: When does artistic expression cross the line into criminality? A group of artists are being charged with "inciting religious hatred" for lampooning religious ideology in a controversial exhibit. For the defendants, who face up to five years in prison if convicted, official reaction to the "Caution: Religion" show, held at Moscow's Andrei Sakharov Museum last year, suggests the return of Soviet-style control - where dissent is quashed and policemen stand in for art critics. In place of the former Communist Party, they say, the Russian Orthodox Church is fast becoming the Kremlin's chief guardian of ideological purity.

    Out of Russia: Soviet art museum has spacious new home
    Mary Abbe, Star Tribune May 8, 2005 Page: When Twin Cities area businessman Ray Johnson started buying big paintings from artists in grubby Moscow apartments and shabby St. Petersburg art studios back in 1989, the Soviet Union was still a country and he was a capitalist pioneer. Sending agents throughout the country, he bought huge numbers of Soviet-era paintings from artists virtually unknown outside their homeland. By 2002 he owned 11,000 to 14,000 Russian paintings that were for sale through his gallery in Scottsdale, Ariz., or at his Bloomington headquarters. Now, as Johnson prepares to re-open his own museum of Russian art on Monday in south Minneapolis, he's a player in an art scene that has gotten too rich even for his own considerable fortune. After the Soviet Union collapsed in the 1990s and communism gave way to free-wheeling capitalism, wealthy new Russian oligarchs began buying up their own heritage and pricing others out of the market, Johnson said. Founder Raymond Johnson in the museum Jerry Holt Star Tribune "It's gotten very, very difficult and very, very expensive, but from time to time I still do buy paintings," Johnson said recently during a preview tour of the museum. "But I'm more active now in loaning and exhibiting paintings and doing educational exhibitions."

    (Description was prepared by Valentina Fedorova, Hermitage, St. Petersburg and Wojciech Zalewski) Stanford's RUSSIAN art collection is housed in several locations: in the Green Library stacks (temporarily at the Stanford Auxiliary Library), in the Art Library, in Special Collections and at the Hoover Institution Library. The Hoover component is not cataloged on line but it can be accessed through a card file in the Hoover Library Reference Room. The Hoover collection was acquired mainly by Professor Frank A. Golder during his travels to the Soviet Union in the 1920s and represents pre-revolutionary, often rare, materials. A significant portion of it is duplicated in the Green Library. The following comments take into consideration all print resources available at Stanford, regardless of their location. (See

    Moscow City Hall One of the most obvious consequences of political and economical stabilisation in Russia is the growing interest of the Russian society in contemporary culture, and more precisely in contemporary art. As a result a totally new Russian art infrastructure has emerged through art fairs, commercial galleries, non-profit exhibition spaces, festivals and conferences. A new Russian public, as well as the new Russian media, have become especially sensitive to everything that is new and current in contemporary culture.
    The Russian art world is developing fast and there is a certain opinion, conviction, vision and understanding that the country needs to organise a major international art event, which would be able to introduce current and relevant art movements to a Russian audience by presenting the most interesting examples of contemporary art. It is the right time in Moscow to create a major international art event, the first of this kind for our country. Visual art is the only art form which does not have a major international forum in our national capital. The Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art would build on the success of other events like the famous Tchaikovsky Musical Festival, Moscow International Film Festival and «The Golden Mask» Theater Festival.
