He usually works with video and mixed media. At the Biennale, he made an impressive installation in the Russian Pavilion, 'Abacus'. It constituted of 40 automated, praying figures, all dressed in the same black robes. They were kneeling, bowing to the ground and reciting prayers from different religions and in different languages. As they were reciting, the texts they were saying was shown on television screens in the corners of the room.

Virtual sworn brothers Rostov-on-Don Novosibirsk MOSCOW Culture ... Museums Very old Russian icons were painted using the Byzantine prototypes, in keeping with the lofty traditions of Byzantine art of the 11th-12th centuries, which lie at the foundation of the entire Christian world culture. Some of ancient icons were brought to Rus from Byzantium. The icons had a tendency to be narrative, "to tell a story" while treating traditional religious subjects and images. Images of Savior and Our Lady were favorite for masters of early Russian religious art. The icons depicting episodes from the saints'lives were also widespread. In the Middle Ages it was believed that the icons were the "true" portraits of saints and biblical events. Combinations of vermilion and ochre-yellow tones were frequently used to make much more impression. Moscow became the largest center of old Russian art. There was created the Moscow art school towards the end of the 15th-16th centuries. Moscow art golden age was linked with the activity of such prominent painters as Theophanes the Greek (originally from Byzantium), Andrei Rublev, Daniil Cherny and Dionisi. Andrei Rublev may be called the most outstanding painter of old Russia. His name was mentioned often in various historical sources, his icon-painting manner was considered to be the best just in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Russian Orthodox church: early history and art
Russian Orthodox church is largest autocephalous, or ecclesiastically independent, Eastern Orthodox church in the world. Its membership is estimated at between 40 and 80 million. Internet resources on Christianity are available from the Russian Christian Home Page ( English and Russian versions), courtesy of Oleg Voskresensky (vosole@bethel.edu) Removal of the empire's capital from Rome to Constantinople, the "second Rome," in 330 greatly strengthened the temporal power of the bishop of Rome. In the Byzantine Empire the patriarch of Constantinople remained under the political control of the Christian emperor. Cultural, political, philosophical, and theological differences strained relations between the two cities. Rome demanded Latin as the one ecclesiastical language, but Constantinople encouraged national languages for the liturgy and emphasized translation of the Scriptures. In 1054 leaders of the two bodies excommunicated each other. One reflection of growing difficulties lay in counterclaims to pursue mission in and hold the allegiance of border areas between the two jurisdictions. Rostislav of Great Moravia sought help from the Emperor, who (presumably through the Patriarch) in about 862 sent two brothers, Constantine (later called Cyril; c. 827-869) and Methodius (c. 825-884), from Constantinople to Moravia. They provided Scriptures and liturgy in the mother tongue of each people evangelized. They also trained others in their methodsa major factor in winning Bulgaria.

Russian art was dominated by the Orthodox Church which drew on the traditions of Byzantine art, producing outstanding icons, carvings, metalwork, and embroidery.
The arts declined during the Mongol occupation (mid-13th century to the end of the 14th century) but revived during the 15th century. The development of the iconostasis (a screen, decorated with icons, which separates the altar from the body of the church) created new opportunities for painters. This period saw the rise of the Novgorod School, noted for its rich colours, and the exquisite icons of Ivan Rublev, the most important Russian icon painter.
After the highpoint reached in the 15th century, icon painting gradually declined. A new style in icon art was inaugurated by the Straganov School in the late 16th century, the masters of which produced highly elaborate icons, mostly miniatures, while the 17th century saw the decline of the art into mere virtuosity. The Russian Neo-Primitivists looked to Russia's traditional art forms, such as the lubok [a popular woodcut] and the icon. Another leader of Neo-Primitivism in the Russian avant-garde was Natalia Goncharova, who explained, "I shook off the dust of the West. I turned away from the West because for me personally it had dried up and because my sympathies lie with the East."
