Home About us Programmes Undergraduate Degrees ... Postgraduate Themes in Russian Culture and Identity Tutor: Orlando Figes The 1917 Revolution has traditionally divided the history of Russia into two entirely separate categories: Russian and Soviet history. The Cold War reinforced this separation. But with the collapse of the Soviet Union historians are re-examing the themes of Russian history that cut across the divide of 1917. This course explores the essential structures of Russian life between 1800 and 1991. Topics covered include: the imperial mission; problems of political reform; the cult of the leader; the peasant problem; Bolshevism as social revolution; the political culture of the revolutionary intelligentsia; culture and national identity.

Peter R. Mills Anthropology Department Chair and Associate Professor Background: Hawai`i's Russian Adventure: a new look at old history Current Research: In the Spring of 2004 Dr. Mills began a long-term research project in association with Dr. Ken Hon (Dept. of Geology) using non-destructive Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) to analyze basalt and volcanic glass artifacts. This information can be used to help study stone tool exchange patterns, and is being facilitated through a Major Research Instrumentation Grant from the National Science Foundation (UH04978) for $143,977.00 which was recently awarded to Mills (PI) and Hon (Co-PI). Mills also continues to develop an historical archaeology program at UH Hilo to better understand the multi-ethnic communities that formed in Hawai`i in the late eighteenth century and nineteenth century. Field project sites have included the following: 2001-02 Survey of prehistoric and early historical sites on the coastal terrace of 2001-2003 Survey of nineteenth century ranching and homestead sites at Keanakolu, North Hilo Medicine bottle fragments from Keanakolu 1999 Excavations at the John Young Homestead (c. 1798), Kawaihae

ARCHAEOLOGICAL PROJECTS AT FORT ROSS A rchaeological investigations in the Fort Ross area have contributed valuable information and helped to authenticate the various reconstructions. They illuminate the history of the early Kashaya Indians and the Russian and subsequent American settlements. The earliest work, recording sites for excavation, was done by researchers from the University of California Berkeley in the late 1940s. Excavation projects have been undertaken at various times over the years by archaeologists and anthropologists from University of California Berkeley, San Francisco State University, Santa Rosa Junior College, Sonoma State University, Cabrillo College, the University of Wisconsin, and the California State Department of Parks and Recreation. The Native American sites were first recorded by archaeologists in the 1930s and in the 1960s. In the 1980s archaeological work was extended from the coast to the ridge line northeast of the fort. Prehistoric occupation sites have also been examined at the Reef Campground and on the bluff up the coast from Fort Ross. In 1990 the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee assisted the Department of Parks and Recreation in a project intended to restore the historic Russian cemetery to its former appearance. The St. George Russian-American Archaeological Program (SGRAAP) is a collaborative research program established between Dr. Larry R. Kimball (Appalachian State University) and Dr. Nazim I. Hidjrati (North Ossetian State University) in 1995. The SGRAAP research team consists of Drs. Nazim Hidjrati (Project Director), Larry Kimball (Associate Director of International Expedition), Todd Koetje (Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Assistant Director of the International Expedition), and Alan Deino (Berkeley Geochronology Center, dating). The overall goals of the SGRAAP are:
  • to investigate basic questions of the ancient human past through archaeological excavations at the deeply stratified Palaeolithic site of Weasel Cave in North Ossetia, Russia
  • to provide for the collaboration of Russian, American, and scientists from other countries to investigate basic questions of the Palaeolithic.
Specifically, we are interested in the evolution of human consciousness, Stone Age technologies, and the human ecology of our most ancient human ancestors known in the Caucasus region. Currently this antiquity goes back ~1.6-1.8 million years ago.

The catalogues include home and foreign monographs, articles from collected papers and periodicals. In addition there is a card catalogue of IHMC fellows publications and "Rossica" card catalogue with works of home archaeologists published abroad and works of foreign scientists relevant to russian archaeology. Among the library’s long time projects is one to published a series of Bibliographic indexes of soviet archaeological literature (1918-1987), 9 volumes of which have been already published. Free library access is provided for both archaeologists, scholars of other allied sciences and students nation-wide and from foreign countries. Unfortunately card catalogues available greatly limit information access and library service. The importance of the Internet as the way of communication and knowledge distribution has become evident. Creation of an electronic system and free remote access would play a big role to introduce the library's materials to the scientific community.

Archaeology of the Hsiung-nu in Russia - new discoveries and some problems
by S. Minyaev, Institute of History of Material Culture
Academy of Sciences, Russia
The Hsiung-nu (Huns of Asia ) headed a powerful alliance of cattle-breeding tribes in the late 3rd - the early 2nd century B.C. and dominated in the eastern part of Central Asia during two centuries, laying the foundations for the emergence of tribal alliances there in the Middle Ages. The military-political events of the Hsiung-nu rule are well-known from Chinese written sources. Theirs are testifing: "the hsiung-nu hadn't had the towns, the settlement, the agriculture, they coldn't to sow and they are going for the hunting only".
At the end of XIX to th beginning XX century, the collaborators of Kyachta museum in Russia have investigated especially much of archaeological monuments in Trans-Baikal region. They had discovered many ancient settlements and sepulchres of several time. The discovery of the cemeteries of the Hsiung-nu (Huns of Asia) was one of the most large discoveries at history of world archaeology. The anthropologist from Kyachta J.D.Talko-Grinzevich had discovered these archaeological sites in 1896 and first patterns of the Hsiung-nu art too (he was a manager of the Kyachta museum and afterwards he was a professor of Krakov University in Po- land).
Later in 1924 the expedition of P.Kozlov discovered in Noin-Ula mountains (Northern Mongolia) very riches tombs aof the Hsiung-nu. The silver plates, the carpets, the nephrite articles were republished repeatedly. These sites and objects of art right away attracted attention by all researchers. Since 1928 special expeditions were organized for research of archaeological sites of the Hsiung-nu .

OVERVIEW
Izborsk Fortress has survived for over 1,500 years due to its excellent engineering, monumental construction and continual restoration and improvements by Russian engineers and architects until the 16th century when it was abandoned. In 2001, work begun to authentically restore one tower and a portion of the walls as a model conservation for the ancient fort. Drainage, new capstones and restoration of the deteriorating walls was successfully completed, and the work results sent to Moscow for quality assessment. Despite excellent reviews for quality of the restoration work, Izborsk restoration stopped due to lack of governmental funding and Russia has little private-sector philanthropy available, especially for critically needed for archaeological conservation and research. The stunning Izborsk Fortress and its monumental ramparts is one of the last remaining forts from early Russian history which overlooks the beautiful valley and lake district of Pskov. The Izborsk Fortress is suffering from direct exposure to rain and snow attacking its foundation and ancient walls which no longer have the protective roofing built and maintained over the centuries. Moisture enters the walls and freezes, causing accelerating deterioration and collapse of the towers and walls.

Since devotional objects and symbols are at the Russian site in the region of Ryazan, their meanings might shed light on pagan ceremonies that likely also took place at Stonehenge. Just as the location of Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, appeared to be significant for the megalith's creators, so too did Ryazan for the Russian builders. The site overlooks the junction of two rivers, the Oka and Pronya. It was highly traveled by numerous cultures in ancient times. Ilya Ahmedov, lead archaeologist of the Ryazan excavation and a researcher in the State History Museum of Russia's department of archaeological monuments, described the remains of the structure to Novosti.
