by Victoria Parker Karyn Simmonds isn't your ordinary athlete. The 40-year-old mother of one has completed three 100-mile runs, twelve 50-milers, 65 marathons, and countless 10Ks and 5Ks in the past 15 years. She trained for the endurance races, which are usually run on trails in mountainous terrain, by running 50 to 70 miles per week and riding a stationary bike for 30 minutes four times per weekthat is, until she fractured a tibia. "The times I had walking in my training, I won the races and was significantly stronger..."
” Karyn Simmonds, marathoner and ultramarathoner "After my stress fracture, my doctor advised me to walk, so I started walking hills," says Simmonds, who took a six-week hiatus from runningin order to heal. "When I got back to training, I realized that I could walk hills faster than I could before. Actually, there was a time when I was power walking in a race past people who were running. I decided then to train for walking, too."

American runners and walkers raise $575 million for charity in 2004

    April 16, 2005
Courtesy of USATF The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego, Calif., has been named the 2004 USATF Charitable Race of the Year, while the American Heart Association Heart Walk was honored as 2004 Charitable Organization of the Year. The awards are an outgrowth of USATF's ongoing study into charitable running in the United States, begun in 2002. Conducted internally by USATF - the national governing body of track and field, long-distance running and race walking - with the assistance of graduate students from George Washington University's Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management, the study revealed that approximately $575 million was raised for charitable causes by runners in 2004. USATF gathered data from 20 national charitable race series/organizations and 273 running/walking races, including 24 of the country's 100 largest races. "We began this study three years ago to attempt to put a number on what is an economic and social force in America," said USATF CEO Craig A. Masback. "The results speak volumes. Over the last three years alone, more than $1.6 billion has been raised by runners and walkers who are training and competing for a cause. Charity running continues to grow, even as competitive marathoners continue to raise the bar of elite performance. The marathon phenomenon has had a positive effect on American society, from promoting fitness to pursuing altruistic goals such as charity fund-raising."

Race walking differs from running in that it requires the competitor to maintain contact with the ground and straighten their front knee when the foot makes contact with the ground, keeping it straightened until the knee passes under the body. Judges evaluate the technique of race walkers and report fouls which may lead to disqualification. All judging is done by the eye of the judge and no outside technology is used in making judging decisions.

      History
Athletics was the original sport at the first Olympics back in 776 BC where the only event held was the stadium-length foot race or "stade". The earliest recorded win was at these games in the stade race. There were several other "Games" held throughout Europe in later eras:
      • The Pythian Games (founded 527 BC ) held in Delphi every four years The Nemean Games (founded 516 BC ) held in Argolid every two years The Isthmian (founded 523 BC ) held on the Isthmus of Corinth every two years (one year being that which followed the Olympics) The Roman Games — a direct imitation of the Greek Olympics, however was a much more popularised spectacle, with most competitors likely to have been professional athletes (the Greek Olympics was more a common-man's fare). Many themes of the Roman Circus (chariot races, gladiatorial combats and wild animal displays) were incorporated into the Roman Games asides from athletic sports.

    THE BUCKEYE STRIDERS
Buckeye Striders is a walking and racewalking club dedicated to advancing sport and fitness through walking. Walkers of all paces and fitness levels are welcome. We are members of the USATF. Our members participate in competitive Racewalking Events across Ohio and the Midwest as well as noncompetitive walking events including charity 5Ks, half marathons and marathons. We also walk every Saturday morning at different city/county parks in central Ohio. The pace on Saturday ranges from a fitness walking pace to very competitive. If you want to participate be assured that there will be someone walking at or close to your pace. You need not worry about walking alone. Walking instruction is also available through the summer on Sunday evenings. Check out the website at home.columbus.rr.com/racewalker for more information. If you would like to receive weekly e-mails notifying you of the location of the walks and any special events, please send an e-mail to j shuter@gcfn.org
