Four years later, they were permitted to participate in the "ladylike" sports of tennis, golf, and croquet. But things have changed. Now there are thousands of female athletes competing in the Summer Games, in nearly every Olympic sport even wrestling, which is open to women for the first time this year. But as RFE/RL reports, getting to the Olympics remains a challenge for many female athletes, particularly those from strictly conservative Muslim countries where beliefs about how a woman should dress and behave often clash with the contemporary traditions of international sports.

The Olympic Sport of Edgecrafting
I am not planning on watching much of the Athens Olympics televised by NBC. Why not? Well, NBC’s coverage of the major sports and Olympic events like Gymnastics, Swimming, Basketball, and the Opening/Closing ceremonies is too sanitized, too slick, too expected, and too commoditized (i.e. lowest common denominator) for me. However, I do plan to watch the “edgecraft” sports being televised on Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC, and USA cable channels. Televising uncommon but common sports like Badminton, Table Tennis, Field Hockey, Water Polo, and Archery is classic Seth Godin Edgecrafting SETH GODIN EDGECRAFTING REFRESHER COURSE
As detailed in Free Prize Inside , Edgecrafting is about going to the “edges” to find innovation. On the outer edges, one finds the out-of-the-ordinary which can be deemed extreme, offbeat, captivating, and downright remarkable. These remarkable goings-on may be far from being mainstream, but they are definitely worthy of talking about. And discovering talk value is where edgecrafting crafts Free Prizes.

Not a lot of guys could get away with it, but Kevin Sullivan can. Several times a year, the 30-year-old Brantford native packs his bag, tells his wife, Karen, he's off to do do some running around and won't be back for a while. She holds the front door open, hugs him for good luck and sends him on his way.

http://www.sportsci.org/news/news9705/gengap.html The world's fastest women are now getting slower, while the men keep getting faster. That's the outcome of our analysis of top running performances of the last 40 years. Reduced use of anabolic steroids may be the reason women runners are no longer becoming like men. It's well known that top female runners have been catching up on their male counterparts. Some authors have even suggested that women might one day run as fast as men. For example, Ward and Whipp (1992) predicted that the men's and women's marathon world records would be equal by 1998 and that women record holders would catch up with men in shorter distances early in the 21st century. The American public agrees: a pre-Olympic poll of 1,000 adults last May found that 66 percent of Americans believe "the day is coming when top female athletes will beat top males at the highest competitive levels" (Tharp, 1996).

A complete Summary of the database contents is also available. The Bibliography Project research team credits can be viewed as well. Welcome
from Dr. Louis Grivetti, the project's compiler:
This year, 1996, marks the centennial celebration of the modern Olympic movement. In this spirit of celebration we acknowledge and recognize the names and publications of more than 50,000 historical and contemporary scholars, linked by the thread of a united, common interest in athletics, sport, and recreation. Athletics, games, leisure pursuits, physical education, play activities, and sports lie at the junction between the humanities, social sciences, and biological-medical sciences. While athletic activities most likely had their origin in military training, it is difficult in modern times to separate each theme: athletics from games, games from leisure pursuits and physical education, physical education from play, play from recreation, or recreation from sports. During past and present centuries research on human athletics, games, play, recreation, and sports has been conducted by a broad range of scientists, whether dietitians, nutritionists, physiologists, or physicians. Research on these themes also has been conducted by a broad range of scholars representing the humanities and social sciences, whether anthropologists, artists, classicists, dancers, economists, geographers, historians, musicians, psychologists, social theorists, or sociologists.
